BMT BASICS Bone Marrow and Stem Cells Bone marrow is the soft, spongy tissue found inside the bone. Its goal is to form blood cells. All blood cells develop from immature cells called stem cells. Stem cells develop into one of three following types of mature blood cells which enter into the blood stream: Red Blood Cells (RBCs) White Blood Cells (WBCs) Platelets Some stem cells are also present in the blood stream; they are called peripheral blood stem cells (PBSCs).
