Use of daylight<br />

Daylight can often be used effectively by automatically dimm<strong>in</strong>g the two rows of lights<br />

adjacent to w<strong>in</strong>dows (daylight switch<strong>in</strong>g is not recommended <strong>in</strong> offices because of the<br />

distraction it can cause—although dimm<strong>in</strong>g can be used).<br />

Avoid excess light<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The build<strong>in</strong>g owner and the light<strong>in</strong>g designer usually provide office-standard light<strong>in</strong>g<br />

be<strong>for</strong>e the office space has a tenant and the usage of the space is known. This results <strong>in</strong><br />

ceil<strong>in</strong>g-mounted light fitt<strong>in</strong>gs be<strong>in</strong>g used to provide an illum<strong>in</strong>ation level suitable <strong>for</strong><br />

read<strong>in</strong>g almost everywhere, even though only about 5–10% of the office space will<br />

require this light<strong>in</strong>g level (e.g., 1 m 2 of desk space per person).
