he past year brought many challenges to BIOS, but 

also many accomplishments. BIOS remains strong, 

and continues to be an extraordinary global scientific and 

educational institution, despite the difficult economic 

times. The business of BIOS is doing well – grant success 

is high, scientific publications are on the rise, and education 

programs are well subscribed. Our focus in 2010 was 

to increase funding to the endowment, and we have made 

significant strides on that front. We also focused on major 

facility issues, however much of this will have to be tempered, 

factoring in economic challenges. 

We at BIOS have an unwavering commitment to educating 

Bermudian youth about marine science and the 

local environment. The institution also continues to be 

a training centre on an international scale. It was another 

outstanding year for BIOS education, with POGO and 

the local education programs proving to be particularly 

successful. 

The Waterstart season was fully subscribed again this year, 

and approximately 2000 local students attended the BIOS 

Explorer program. In fact, due to its popularity, an additional 

day was added to the schedule to accommodate all 

requested visits. Efforts are being made to expand the program 

to allow the participation of a greater number of students. 

A growing number of older teenaged students are 

looking for a “next step”, thus, the Bermuda Program is 

also being expanded in 2010 in order to provide additional 

experiences for local students, doubling in size from four 

scholarships to eight. The new extended program therefore 

provides opportunities for students who have graduated 

from high school but are still in the early stages of 

their undergraduate career. 

EDucATIOn HIGHLIGHTS 

The coopers Island restoration work has been given an 

indirect boost through HSBc’s involvement. The bank 

has sponsored the removal of derelict buildings and invasive 

trees from the park, which will enable greater access 

for our student groups to continue their work 

planting native trees. 

Woodland restoration work continues as a means of providing 

hands-on experience with ecological issues and the 

local oceanic island curriculum. Several local classes are 

scheduled to assist at coopers Island nature Reserve, and 

other informal education groups (Operation Raleigh, 

BHS Duke of Edinburgh group) are assisting at Ferry 

Point Park. 

coral lectures and snorkel lessons continue in association 

with the Bermuda Sloop Foundation aboard the Spirit of 

Bermuda. We contribute a day’s aquatic programming 

each week to assist the local middle school groups while 

they are aboard. This reaches all public middle school students 

and seems both a valuable educational avenue as well 

as good publicity for BIOS. 

In connection with educators from the R/V Sea Dragon / 

Pangaea Expedition, we have arranged field trips for local 

students to investigate the problem of plastic trash in the 

Sargasso Sea. 

It was another impressive year for the POGO centre of 

Excellence and we have been given the go-ahead for another 

year. The current POGOnians were selected from 

an applicant pool of 111 from thirty-eight countries, showing 

just how competitive and selective the program has be-

come. The POGO program is an impressive range of students 

from around the globe and it is of great value to be 

educating young scientists about preserving the oceans 

and marine life. 

2010 also proved to be another strong year of student enrollment 

for the fall semester courses offered at BIOS. The 

Marine Invertebrate Zoology and coral Reef Ecology 

classes were filled with enthusiastic students. The summer 

internship program continues to be very popular and 

we receive hundreds of inquiries each year from potential 

interns. We now have two BIOS graduate students, one in 

the university of Southampton-BIOS collaborative PhD 

Program, the other in the Princeton-BIOS joint PhD Program. 

Both students are mentored by Dr. Mike Lomas and 

co-advised by Dr. Duncan Purdie (university of 

Southampton, national Oceanography centre) and Drs. 

Danny Sigman and Bess Ward (Princeton university). 

RESEARcH HIGHLIGHTS 

More than forty peer-review papers were published in 

2010, with several high-profile publications in Nature and 

Science and a very long list of co-authors at other institutions 

demonstrating the active network BIOS faculty have 

established. 

BIOS is proud to say we received an $850,000, nSF grant 

for BEAcOn (BErmuda ocean Acidification and cOral 

reef investigation). BIOS faculty were Principal Investigator 

(PI) or co-PI for at least twenty-two active and separate 

federal agency awards and several other foundation/non-federal 

agency awards. This exceeds the hopes 

for peer-review publication and grantsmanship outlined 

in the strategic plan a few years ago. Although BIOS has a 

small number of faculty compared to other institutions, 

their per-capita contribution to the scientific and broader 

community is impressive. 

Finally, BIOS would like to welcome three new trustees: 

neill currie, cEO of Renaissance Re, Brad Kopp the cEO 

of Butterfield Bank and Michael McGavick, cEO of XL 

capital. It cannot go without saying that we were also saddened 

by the untimely death of Trustee Matt Simmons 

who was a great supporter of BIOS. 

Our sincere gratitude for all of your support, and your 

continued commitment to BIOS as we look to build our 

endowment and annual funds, and design a strategic plan 

that will make BIOS even more prominent and well-respected 

as a global marine science institution.

ooking back on 2010, we realize that fundamentally BIOS is very strong. Science and education 

programs continue to be our mainstay during these unpredictable economic times. 

Revenues derived from Program Services [scientific research and education] amounted to 

$9,361,000 in 2010, up $13,000 from 2009 which results are remarkable considering total revenues 

were down $337,000 in the same period and the challenges that BIOS faced. 

This increase came in spite of the disruptions experienced on campus resulting from the forced renovation 

of the nautilus (previously Blue Building) staff apartment complex which disruption 

caused significant revenue loss from educational courses and group business. Limited space yielded 

limitations on program enrollments. Additionally, staff were housed off-campus for a while sending 

those rents to others. 

Total assets increased $500,000 from 2009 to 2010 as property and equipment increased $573,000. 

Most of the increase in Property and equipment resulted from upgrades to the accommodations. 

Investments continue to do well increasing by a net of $901,000. Receivables decreased as existing 

$726,000 pledges were paid. Those pledge donations designated for the naess Laboratory 

Building, built in 2004, were used to fully repay the construction debt on that building. Plus the 

annual pledge payment for the ship purchase loan repaid a portion of that loan. In all $1,540,000 

of long-term debt was repaid. 

Development expenses were down as the new Development Officer started on September 1 filling 

a vacancy created at the end of the prior year. Management & General expenses increased as we 

embarked upon an aggressive maintenance program to restore and upgrade our facilities. new financing 

was in progress as of year-end to provide much of the needed funding for this effort. As 

has been the trend at BIOS, 88% of our expenses are for program related activities.

Investments principally consist of funds managed by Common fund, The Investment Fund for Foundations’ (TIFF) Investments Program 

(TIP) and The Vanguard Group, Inc; and, certain donated equity securities, sale of which is restricted.

NOTE 3 PROPERTY AND EQUIPMENT 

Depreciation expense amounted to $1,114,000 in 2010 and $1,049,000 in 2009. Acquisitions of fixed assets amounted to $1,686,736 

and $499,000. Property and equipment, at undepreciated cost, is $26,974,000 at December 31, 2010. 

NOTE 4 LOANS PAYABLE 

BIOS repaid and retired two bank loans in 2010 and entered into another loan for purposes of performing major maintenance and 

upgrades on existing properties. In addition to the major maintenance loan, the remaining loans are for the purchase and retrofitting 

of the R/V HSBC Atlantic Explorer, and construction of the staff apartment building. Interest rates on the bank loans float based on 

the three-month LIBOR rate plus up to 1%. The bank loans are generally payable on demand by the bank. Interest expense was 

$34,000 and $135,000 for the years ended December 31, 2010 and 2009. 

NOTE 5 NET ASSETS 

BIOS reports its financial position and activities according to three classes of net assets: permanently restricted, temporarily 

restricted, and unrestricted. Permanently Restricted Net Assets comprise gifts and bequests that create or increase endowment 

funds. Temporarily Restricted Net Assets are those gifts which are received with stipulations that the gift be used for a particular 

purpose or during a specified future time. All other net assets and those for which restrictions have been met are classified as
