Somerset (LPD 25) moved to drydock
for final hull work
Ingalls Shipbuilding
March 29, 2012
Somerset (LPD 25) was successfully moved to the floating drydock on Friday, March 23.
Painter Nora Munoz cleans grease from the skids.
The pushover of Somerset (LPD 25) at the Ingalls Avondale facility was
“no pushover” according to the men and women involved in the move.
The shipbuilders pushed ahead as rain drenched the southeast
bringing high winds and lightning.
“We saw about six inches of rain,” said Leroy Cortez, general
superintendent of Manufacturing Services. “For the safety of our
shipbuilders, we had to take cover whenever lightning was detected,
making for a long two days.”
Huge hydraulic jacks slid the enormous ship, which weighs more
than 21,700 tons, to the centerline of the floating drydock by late Friday
night.
Manufacturing Services, which oversees the pushover, includes the
Crane, Rigging and Carpentry departments. According to Cortez, the
maneuver took their complete support along with help from the Paint
and Hull departments.
“As the ship is pushed forward, we have to clean the skids of all
grease to avoid any environmental impact,” Cortez said. “Our entire
department is about 150 people, so we are thankful for the support from
other departments. It was a great team effort.”
Safety was a major concern during the operation according to Cortez.
“Our shipbuilders had to be aware of their surroundings,” said
Cortez. “With the grease and heavy rain, everything was slippery.
Fortunately we had no major injuries and we hope to maintain that
trend through launch and all the way to sailaway.”
By Saturday morning, eight tugs moved the entire drydock and ship
westward up the river to Wet Dock 2.
According to John L. Kennedy, LPD 25 ship superintendent, craft
men and women began in earnest this week putting the finishing
touches on the portions of the ship that will be deep beneath the water
after launch in mid-April.
After the supports are repositioned, painters will complete the ship’s
underwater coating. Internal systems such as the fire main, hydraulic
systems and the anchor windlass must also be finished prior to launch.
Kennedy said completing the starboard side of the ship at this stage
will improve cost and, more importantly, the safety of the work.
“Aside from the bottom, we also have to get the starboard side nearly
completed,” said Kennedy. “Currents and traffic in the Mississippi River
make starboard work dangerous. It’s also expensive to rent crane barges
and tugs.”
Avondale plans to launch LPD 25 during the second week of April.
“We have a lot of work to accomplish in three weeks,” said Kennedy.
But the dedication of our shipbuilders, like that displayed during the
pushover event, will see us through to launching this ship on schedule
with safety and quality in the forefront.”
The success of the pushover has set the stage for the remaining
construction of the ship before and after launch according to LPD 25
Ship Construction Manager Tommy “Cabbage” Barrett. The ship is
now approximately 76 percent completed.
“We still have a long way to go, but we look forward to providing
another fine product to the U.S. Navy,” Barrett said.
Jackson County Industrial Trade Show brings businesses together
Phil Hines representing a local business discusses opportunities through Ingalls Shipbuilding with, from left, Ingalls Small Business liaisons Betty
White and Briana Howze and Procurement Planning Control Representative Katrina Currie during the Jackson County Industrial Trade Show.
Business opportunities small and large were the fare of a recent
local outreach event.
Exhibitors set up more than 100 booths inside and outside the B.E.
“Mac” McGinty Civic Center in Pascagoula, drawing the attention of
2,500-plus visitors to the Jackson County Industrial Trade Show on
March 20 and 21.
Ingalls Shipbuilding was one of five gold sponsors for the event.
“Ingalls has a long history of supporting this trade show,” Small
Business Liaison Betty White said. “Bringing exhibitors and buyers
together to exchange information on products, services and new
capabilities supports Ingalls and helps Jackson County grow a
stronger business community.”
Organized by the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, the two
day event allowed small and large businesses to gain exposure and
share knowledge and ideas.
“This forum provides a communication and networking channel
between Ingalls and local suppliers,” Small Business Liaison Briana
Howze said. “It was rewarding to represent Ingalls as a valuable
business resource and advocate to small businesses.”
Socio-Economic Business Manager Joan Branson said small
businesses bring great value to larger corporations like Ingalls
Shipbuilding.
“Small businesses have the subject matter expertise, flexibility and
desire to support Ingalls on all levels,” Branson said. “Our support
provides a venue for them to pass on knowledge and updated
information to the entire community in a collective setting.”
Now in its 23rd year, the annual trade show continues to grow and
add new opportunities for participants.
For the first time this year, exhibitors had the chance to present their
business capabilities before a panel of sponsors.
“Exhibitors return each year as they realize the impact the
networking experience has had on their business’s success,” Branson
said. “We look forward to hearing from more entrepreneurs in the
future.”
Tickets available for Mississippi commissioning through March 31
Shipbuilders wishing to attend the
June 2 commissioning of Mississippi (SSN 782)
by General Dynamics Electric Boat should go
to the commissioning website,
www.ussmississippi.org, by March 31 to
secure tickets to the event.
Ingalls Shipbuilding is not directly
involved in this event.
The commissioning ceremony will be
held at the Port of Pascagoula facilities on the
west bank of the Pascagoula River. Due to
space restrictions and security requirements,
attendance will be by invitation only.
If you plan to attend you will need to
visit the commissioning website and submit
a request for an invitation. All invitation
requests must be received via the website by
March 31.
If you receive an invitation, follow the
instructions in the invitation packet to
ensure that you are mailed an entry pass to
the event.
Those who are unable to receive an
invitation will have the opportunity to view
the ceremony from various public venues
on the east bank of the Pascagoula River.
Pascagoula city officials will announce plans
for those venues once planning is finalized.
SSN 782 is the fifth U.S. Navy vessel
to be named USS Mississippi. Its naming
recognizes the state’s long-standing tradition
of shipbuilding in support of our nation’s
defense. It also honors the spirit of the
people of Mississippi who have made great
strides in recovering from the devastation of
Hurricane Katrina.
Self Defense
Ingalls women learn how
to protect themselves
Public Safety Instructor Jody Pittman, left, demonstrates self defense and evasion techniques with Security Manager Brett Villarrubia at a session
presented in DCR 1 on March 21. The event was coordinated by three employee resource groups in recognition of Women’s History Month.
Pascagoula’s DCR 1 was filled with action as Security Manager
Brett Villarrubia and Public Safety Instructor Jody Pittman
demonstrated scenarios between an attacker and his intended
victim.
“The best way to get out of a situation is to avoid it,” said
Pittman. “You have to be aware of your surroundings at all
times.”
In recognition of Women’s History Month during the month of
March, three employee resource groups collaborated to present a
women’s self defense course on Thursday, March 21.
The African American Shipbuilders Association, Women in
Shipbuilding Enterprises and Shipbuilder Women Engineers
saw a need for such a course after a member noted a rise in
crimes against women.
“I had noticed a lot of purse snatchings in the news,” said
Contina Benn, project chair for SWE. “At the employee resource
group summit last fall, we looked at ways we could collaborate
to bring in an instructor.”
Vanessa Winchester, president of WISE, looks forward to
collaborating with other employee resource groups in the future.
“I feel that those who attended are better equipped to deal
with threats or possible threats to their safety,” said Winchester.
The physical demonstrations focused on ways to quickly
escape an attacker and seek help.
Situational awareness was the key message. Pittman, who
works as an investigator for District Attorney Tony Lawrence’s
office, advised women that they should never let people they
don’t know into their homes.
Pittman also warned attendees about the danger of posting
too much information on social media sites like Facebook.
Those who attended the course said they look forward to
informative sessions in the future.
“I felt the course was very informative and pertinent,” said
Tammy Childers, Engineering Administration manager. “He
brought out some interesting facts and pointed out potential
dangerous situations and safety techniques that I had not
previously thought of.”
“Women young and old should be equipped to manage every
facet of their lives,” said Angela Pierre, director of Supply Chain
Management Administration. “Self defense and situational
awareness are but a few of the critical core skills we need to
keep ourselves safe and happy.”
