8. THE INTERNATIONAL JURY<br />

Monte Hellman, <strong>director</strong>, United States, President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jury<br />

Born in 1932 at Long Island (NY) Monte Hellman studied dramatic art at Stanford University and filming at<br />

UCLA before starting his career as a <strong>director</strong> under <strong>the</strong> wing <strong>of</strong> Roger Corman. After a handful <strong>of</strong> horror<br />

films, he made The Shooting and Ride in <strong>the</strong> Whirlwind which delighted aficianados <strong>of</strong> westerns and made<br />

his mark as a <strong>director</strong>. Then came Two-Lane Blacktop which sealed his reputation once and for all as a<br />

cult <strong>director</strong>. His special style and his propensity for choosing charismatic performers (Harry Dean<br />

Stanton, Warren Oates and Jack Nicholson – whom he discovered) make him a character in a class <strong>of</strong> his<br />

own in <strong>the</strong> American cinema.<br />

Elina Lowensohn, actress, Romania / United States<br />

Born in Romania in 1966, Elina Löwensohn moves to <strong>the</strong> United States where she studies <strong>the</strong>ater at New<br />

York University. Besides an extensive work in <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ater, she begins to work in <strong>the</strong> cinema thanks to Hal<br />

Hartley with whom she acts in Theory <strong>of</strong> Achievement (1991), Simple Men (1992) and Amateur (1994), a<br />

couple <strong>of</strong> short movies and a play at <strong>the</strong> Salzburg Opera Festival. In <strong>the</strong> United States, we could see her<br />

in Schindler’s List (Steven Spielberg, 1994) or Basquiat (Julian Schnabel, 1996). In Europe, she went on<br />

with her brilliant career with various <strong>director</strong>s like Po Chih Leong (The Wisdom <strong>of</strong> Crocodiles, 1998),<br />

Philippe Grandieux (Sombre, 1998) and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Un long dimanche de fiançailles, 2004).<br />

Laurence Bachman, producer, France<br />

After studies in Paris and a degree in economy, Laurence Bachman chose a career in research with <strong>the</strong><br />

CNRS before joining <strong>the</strong> CNC in 1987 as assistant to <strong>the</strong> <strong>director</strong> <strong>of</strong> audiovisual programmes. She <strong>the</strong>n<br />

embarked on a successful period in production with Caméras Continentales, <strong>the</strong>n GMT. She later founded<br />

Alva Production, which she managed till 1997. Two years later, she was awarded Chevalier de l'Ordre des<br />

Arts et des Lettres, before becoming <strong>director</strong> for drama at France 2, where she worked on such<br />

outstanding productions as Jean Moulin, Napo<strong>leo</strong>n, Le Champ Dolent and Colette. She has been<br />

managing <strong>the</strong> production company Telfrance since last September.<br />

Adam Biro, publisher, Hungary<br />

Adam Biro was born in Budapest in 1941 and grew up in Paris and Geneva. After a degree in <strong>the</strong> arts, he<br />

joined l'Office du Livre in Fribourg as publishing <strong>director</strong>, before taking over as <strong>director</strong> at Filipacchi in<br />

Paris, in 1970. He later went on to manage different departments at <strong>the</strong> publishers Duculot and<br />

Flammarion, before creating Adam Biro Art Publications in 1987. He has also published a number <strong>of</strong><br />

novels, including Deux Juifs voyagent dans un train (1998) and Les Ancêtres d'Ulysse (2003), as well as<br />

art and literature reference books.<br />

Alejandro Chomski, <strong>director</strong>, Argentina<br />

Born in 1968, Alejandro Chomski obtained a prestigious scholarship to <strong>the</strong> New York Film Academy and<br />

The American Film Institute, in California, before working as assistant to Spike Lee, Emir Kusturica and<br />

Jim Jarmusch. He <strong>the</strong>n returned to his native Argentina to direct his first feature, Today and Tomorrow,<br />

which was in competition in <strong>the</strong> Un Certain Regard category <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last Cannes Festival, and went on to<br />

win acclaim at a number <strong>of</strong> <strong>festival</strong>s around <strong>the</strong> world. He is currently working on <strong>the</strong> adaptation <strong>of</strong> Paul<br />

Auster's novel, The Country <strong>of</strong> Last Things, in close collaboration with <strong>the</strong> American author. Alejandro<br />

Chomski is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most convincing and innovative elements to come out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new wave from<br />

Argentina.<br />

Edmée Cuttat, journalist, Switzerland<br />

Assistant editor at <strong>the</strong> Tribune de Genève, Edmée Cuttat has always been greatly interested in <strong>the</strong><br />

cultural field. And particularly in film that she has followed over a number <strong>of</strong> years and has helped to<br />

promote in <strong>the</strong> columns <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geneva based newspaper, through weekly supplements, or <strong>by</strong> covering<br />

film events, starting with Berlin and Venice. Alongside <strong>the</strong>se responsibilities, she still finds time to continue<br />

her work as a film critic and covers <strong>the</strong> <strong>festival</strong>s in Cannes and Locarno.<br />

Sergey Gribkov, producer, Russie<br />

After a career in advertising and editing, Sergey Gribkov founded <strong>the</strong> Moscow based production company<br />

Top Line in 200<strong>1.</strong> He soon acquired a solid reputation in Russia as his first film project, <strong>the</strong> feature<br />

directed <strong>by</strong> Roman Prygunov, The Solitude <strong>of</strong> Blood, was selected for <strong>the</strong> International Festival <strong>of</strong><br />

Moscow <strong>the</strong> following year. His second project, Ruslan Baltzer's film Don't Even Think, was also one <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> biggest commercial successes in Russia. Sergey Gribkov is currently working on a number <strong>of</strong> projects,<br />

including a comedy, a spy film and <strong>the</strong> first feature <strong>by</strong> young <strong>director</strong> Pavel Ruminov, Push!<br />

10. THE FIPRESCI JURY (INTERNATIONAL CRITICS)<br />

Ronald Bergan<br />

Ronald Bergan, Vice-President <strong>of</strong> FIPRESCI (International Federation <strong>of</strong> Film Critics), is a regular<br />

contributor to a number <strong>of</strong> British national newspapers, as The Guardian, has read scripts for <strong>the</strong><br />

European Screen Fund and been consultant and writer on a number <strong>of</strong> TV documentaries. He teaches<br />

Film History and Film Theory at Florida International University in Miami, and has written over 20 books on<br />

<strong>the</strong> cinema, including biographies <strong>of</strong> Jean Renoir, Sergei Eisenstein, Francis Coppola and <strong>the</strong> Coen<br />

Bro<strong>the</strong>rs. He is currently editing a book <strong>of</strong> Truffaut interviews.<br />

Ramiro Cristobal Muñoz<br />

Born in Madrid, Ramiro Cristobal Muñoz graduated in Political Science and Information Science. He<br />

started collaborating for various Spanish and foreign magazines and newspapers such as Cambio 16, El<br />

País, Cinemanía or Hoy in Argentina. In 2002, he teaches Cinema and Literature at <strong>the</strong> University<br />

Complutense <strong>of</strong> Madrid and in 2004 History <strong>of</strong> Cinema at <strong>the</strong> casa de Cultura de San Lorenzo de El<br />

Escorial. Film critic and author since already 20 years, he wrote different books including a biography <strong>of</strong><br />

Luis Buñuel and Jean Gabin, and has done over 500 interviews.<br />

Laszlo Kriston<br />

Born in 1979. He was 14 when his short film script called ’Oh, mami!’ was produced <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hungarian<br />

Television, which earned him a CIAK Junior Award in Prague. Graduated at <strong>the</strong> Hungarian Dance<br />

Academy. As a classical ballet student, he appeared on <strong>the</strong> stage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hungarian State Opera House in<br />

various ballet pieces, operas and gala events throughout <strong>the</strong> 90’s, and danced in front <strong>of</strong> numerous<br />

royalties such as Lady Diana and Queen Elisabeth II. In 1999 he started to write about films, and a year<br />

later began working in <strong>the</strong> international <strong>festival</strong> circuit. While traveling extensively to <strong>the</strong> major film<br />

<strong>festival</strong>s in Europe (Cannes, Berlin, Venice, San Sebastian, Karlovy Vary, Moscow etc.), he covers<br />

Magyar Hirlap a leading Hungarian newspaper andVOX mozimagazin, a monthly movie magazine on<br />

<strong>the</strong>se events. He has done over 120 interviews with world-class filmmakers from Hollywood and Europe.<br />

He also publishes articles on a broad range <strong>of</strong> subjects such as film industry, television, mass media and<br />

spirituality. Frequently serves on <strong>the</strong> juries <strong>of</strong> FIPRESCI.<br />
