SUNDAY, July 21<br />

• Board of Governors Student Reception<br />

6:00 - 7:00 P.M., Renaissance Hotel - Watertable Ballroom<br />

This opening reception provides a relaxed opportunity <strong>for</strong> students to meet the <strong>Society</strong>’s Board of Governors, catch up<br />

with old friends and make some new ones, as well as learn about what the <strong>Society</strong> is doing to conserve biodiversity. Light<br />

hors d’oeuvres and cash bar will be provided. Pre-registration is encouraged.<br />

• Opening Ceremony & Reception<br />

7:00 - 9:30 P.M., Exhibit Hall<br />

Meet fellow delegates and reunite with old friends here, at the first official event of the Congress. A reception to include<br />

light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will conclude the evening. Joe Gill, Secretary of the Maryland Department of<br />

Natural Resources, is among the distinguished lineup of speakers. The reception is free <strong>for</strong> registered attendees. You may<br />

also purchase guest tickets to this event.<br />

MONday, July 22<br />

• Special Evening Plenary Panel: Why is “advocacy” such a “four-letter word” <strong>for</strong> scientists<br />

6:00 - 7:00 P.M., Grand Ballroom I&II<br />

This keynote and discussion panel will draw from conservation scientists that have been outspoken leaders in<br />

translating science to policy, including a facilitated discussion regarding the appropriate role of scientists who<br />

“advocate” a policy position.<br />

6:00 - 8:00 P.M., Exhibit Hall<br />

• Marine and Oceania Sections Social<br />

7:30 - 10:00 P.M., Meet at the dock at 913 S. Ann Street - Urban Pirate<br />

Celebrate and get to know two of SCB’s seven Sections at this sensational pirate-themed social! Mix and mingle with<br />

members from the Marine and Oceania Sections on a cruise around the Inner Harbor.<br />

There will be wine (from a local Virginian vineyard) or bring your own bottle / grog !<br />

Please note the boat leaves at 8pm prompt ! Numbers on the pirate ship are limited (first come first served)<br />

It takes at least 30 minutes to walk to the dock from the conference center or <strong>for</strong> a speedier trip take an inner harbor to<br />

fells point water taxi ($7 one way; $12 all day pass; run every 15 minutes; www.baltimorewatertaxi.com)<br />

Are you a student contemplating a Ph.D., a doctoral student nearing completion or a newly minted Dr. conducting<br />

innovative research in conservation biology Have you heard of the David H. Smith <strong>Conservation</strong> Research Fellowship<br />

Whether you are aware of the Smith Fellows program or want to learn more, please join us <strong>for</strong> an in<strong>for</strong>mative lunch<br />

where you will learn about the program and mingle with current and/or past Smith Fellow recipients. This is an excellent<br />

opportunity to find out how you can strengthen your skills through two years of applied post-doctoral research, while<br />

participating in training programs, networking, and field experiences. Heavy hors d’oeuvres provided by the <strong>ICCB</strong><br />

Student Activities Committee.<br />
