This orientation session explores<br />
career options for professionals<br />
in the field of education. This is<br />
an opportunity to learn about<br />
special education and educational therapy. Experienced<br />
professionals will share career advice for those interested<br />
in working as tutors, mentors, and academic coaches.<br />
You will learn what it takes to establish a small business<br />
providing academic advocacy, training, and support<br />
for students with special needs.<br />

This course is designed to provide participants with an<br />
interactive overview of the educational therapist’s role,<br />
including discussions of ethical practices, state and federal<br />
laws related to professional responsibilities and the<br />
therapist’s limitations. The responsibilities of the therapist,<br />
including case management, information gathering,<br />
assessment practices, goal setting and intervention<br />
strategies are also examined.<br />

Therapists, Practicum<br />

Participants are introduced to assessment tools and<br />
procedures frequently used in the educational-therapy<br />
setting. In addition to classroom activities, field experience<br />
involving the administration of specific assessment<br />
instruments is required of all students. Participants have<br />
access to a limited number of assessment instruments<br />
and are assisted in their field-work placement.<br />

The educational therapist’s role involves the remediation<br />
of learning difficulties and the development of appropriate<br />
compensatory strategies for the client to use in various<br />
settings. This course presents several applicable techniques<br />
and materials for subject areas and academic skill problems<br />
in reading, writing, mathematics, science, history and<br />
general study skills. Remediation techniques are based<br />
on current research in adult learning and child and<br />
adolescent development.<br />
Prerequisite(s): “EdTherapy 6” and “EdTherapy 7.”<br />

This final course in the <strong>Education</strong>al Therapy Certificate<br />
Program provides an opportunity for the intern to practice<br />
all aspects of educational therapy, under the supervision<br />
of an experienced professional in the field. To arrange<br />
your internship, contact the program coordinator for<br />

Elective Course<br />
Autism: Intervention and Treatment<br />
X391.7 EDUC (2.0 quarter units)<br />
Participants in this course will learn about core developmental<br />
challenges that impact social-communicative<br />
competence in children with autism and pervasive developmental<br />
disorders. This introduction will be followed by a<br />
review of contemporary issues in intervention methodology,<br />
current efficacy research, and characteristics of effective<br />
educational programs. This information will be used to<br />
help participants identify essential goals for a comprehensive<br />
educational program and methods for selecting<br />
intervention strategies at various stages in development<br />
(i.e., pre-verbal stages, emerging language stages, and<br />
conversational stages). As part of this course, participants<br />
will demonstrate both conceptual and procedural expertise.<br />
