Serving the Needs of Military Families Since 1987
By Virginia Beaton
Trident staff
This was a good season for the Formation
Halifax men’s soccer team.
First they won the regional championship
in August 2009, then in September
the Atlantic team took the trophy at
the CF national championship for the first
time since 1994.
“The level of play at the nationals has
gotten higher,” stated team member
MCpl Nathan Rutherford.
Over time, as soccer has become a
more popular CF sport, the number
of players in the Formation has
increased. “The players are getting
good support from their units, too,” noted
MCpl Rutherford.
He stated that in the regional competition,
the Halifax team bested the CFB
Gagetown team, which often dominates
regional soccer, to win the finals by way
of penalty kicks.
At the nationals, the Atlantic team
“was in a scoring drought during the
round robin,” according to MCpl Rutherford.
“We had a couple of losses in a row
before we pushed through.
The Atlantic team won its first game
against Quebec, then lost to the Prairie
team 0 to 1 and Pacific 0 to 1 before winning
2 to 0 against Ontario. In semifinal
play, the Atlantic team slipped past
Ontario 3 to 2 and proceeded to the finals
after an exciting game that included two
goals by Petawawa in the last five minutes
of regular play, followed by overtime
and penalty kicks that earned the
Atlantic team its semifinal victory.
Meanwhile, the Prairie team defeated the
Pacific team 2 to 1 in semifinals.
In the finals, the Atlantic team met
the Prairie team. “It probably wasn’t the
most entertaining game to watch,” stated
MCpl Rutherford. “We controlled
the middle of the field.” The final score
was 1 to 0, with the Atlantic team winning
its first men’s national soccer title
in 15 years.
The Formation Halifax men’s soccer
team practices from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays
and Thursdays at the Stadacona Fitness
