TRIDENT, NOVEMBER 16, 2009
Mooseheads appreciate DND
By Benjamin J. DeLong
Trident Staff
The Halifax Mooseheads
hockey team honoured
DND and the Canadian military
on Saturday, November 7,
in their sixth annual DND
Appreciation night.
Canadian Forces Halifax
Personnel Support Programs,
in partnership with the Mooseheads,
presented this game,
which was part of the team’s
Quebec Major Junior Hockey
League (QMJHL) regular season.
The Mooseheads played
against the Rocket hockey
team from PEI.
Despite having three members
of the team with the flu,
the Mooseheads swept the PEI
Rocket, 4-1.
The Stadacona band played
the national anthem and CF
and DND personnel received
discounted tickets to the
game. A colour party escorted
RAdm Paul Maddison, Commander
JTFA and MARLANT
for his speech at centre ice.
He stated “What a wonderful
event. I’m so glad to do this
again this year. It means so
much to our military for you to
show support for what we do
here in Canada, and to show
support to those deployed
abroad around the world. To
those of you from Halifax:
thank you. It means a lot that
we’re respected for what we
do on your behalf.”
RAdm Maddison was
accompanied by Bdr Adam
Boutlier, who was seriously
injured by an IED explosion
in Kandahar on February 5,
2009. He joined RAdm Maddison
at centre ice for the official
puck drop.
The game began and within
the first few minutes, the
Mooseheads scored. This
would be 16-year-old forward,
Brent Andrew’s first
QMJHL goal. Six minutes later,
the Mooseheads would
have sealed their victory
over the Rocket as forward
The sixth annual DND Appreciation Night at the Halifax Metro Centre was a blow-out game
between the Halifax Mooseheads and the PEI Rocket.
Charles Bety scored, but the
goal was revoked after a
review. It took another five
minutes for Mooseheads centre
offence Matthew Stoddard
to score, making the
score 2-0 Mooseheads.
The second period favoured
PEI, with eight minutes of
penalties on Halifax. The
Rocket took nine shots on net
but couldn’t get any past the
Mooseheads’ goalie. There
was a good sign that Halifax
would dominate the third period,
as PEI received two penalties
in the last two minutes of
the second period.
In the third period, Mooseheads
centre forward Tomas
Knotek scored a third goal 30
seconds into the third period,
assisted by right wing offence
Travis Randell and defenceman
Garrett Clarke. The next
goal was two minutes later by
left wing offence Gabriel Desjardins.
Mooseheads had 25
shots on net and PEI had 22.
The third period drew
penalty time for both teams
and with one minute left, it
seemed to be a shutout
victory for the Mooseheads
until, with only 30.7 seconds
on the clock, PEI forward
Jordan Escott got one past
the goalie, with an assist
from forward Brandon Street.
BEN DELONG, TRIDENT STAFF
The final score was 4-1 for
the Mooseheads.
Ken Doucette, Corporate
Services Director PSP Halifax,
stated “DND Appreciation
Night is one of our most
important annual events. The
Mooseheads organization is
amazingly supportive to the
military community and we
are very grateful for that.”
Brian Urquhart, Mooseheads
Vice President Business Operations,
stated “The entire
organization, staff, players
and fans look forward to this
oppurtunity each season to
honour and say thanks to the
men and women of our CF.”
Both teams wore helmets
depicting poppies and the
Mooseheads’red jerseys bore
embroidered poppy crests.
Five jerseys were given away
during the game in a raffle
to benefit Camp Hill Veterans’
Memorial Hospital. The
remaining jerseys will be
auctioned on November 27 at
the Fleet Club.

His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, inspects a 100-person Guard of Honour.
Royal visit to St. John’s an overwhelming success
By Judy Voisey
CFS St. John’s
Public Affairs Officer
Their Royal Highnesses, The
Prince of Wales and the Duchess
of Cornwall were welcomed to
Canada with full military honours at
Mile One Stadium in St. John’s,
Newfoundland and Labrador on
Monday, November 2, 2009.
Army, Navy and Air Force units
in St. John’s came together to provide
a 100-person guard of honour,
21-gun salute, colour party and ceremonial
music.
An estimated 2500 people waved
flags and swayed in their seats
while the Royal Newfoundland
Regiment Band performed a variety
of songs and traditional Newfoundland
folk music.
Large screens at both ends of the
stadium showed the Royal couple
exiting the CF CC-150 Airbus. Within
minutes the couple were being
escorted into Mile One by Her
Excellency the Right Honourable
Michaëlle Jean, Governor General
of Canada.
While His Royal Highness
inspected the honour guard, the 56
Engineer Squadron was broadcast
live on the screens as they fired the
21-gun salute from Cabot Tower on
Signal Hill.
His Royal Highness spoke of his
family’s “deep respect for the
strength of the Canadian character,”
noting the efforts of civilians during
911, as well as Canadian military
efforts around the world. “Canadians
are bringing the light of freedom
and justice to the darker corners
of the world,” he said, “I need
hardly say, therefore, how much my
heart goes out to the family of Private
Steven Marshall who was
killed in action last week”.
On the third and final day of the
visit, Prince Charles laid a wreath at
the National War Memorial to honour
the lost sons and daughters of
Newfoundland and Labrador. Following
the ceremony, the Royal
couple greeted members of the
Royal Canadian Legion, the Peacekeepers
Association, Afghanistan
veterans, as well as family members
of fallen soldiers.
Concert unites CF bands in remembrance
By Virginia Beaton
Trident staff
The eighth annual Till We Meet
Again concert was an integrated
effort as Navy, Air Force and Army
band musicians united on the stage of
the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium on
Tuesday, November 3, 2009.
There was a wealth of CF and DND
talent on display, as RAdm Paul
Maddison, Commander JTFA and
MARLANT noted.
He thanked the audience for
being there “as we gather together
this evening to remember and to
celebrate service to country and
to community.”
The Stadacona Band of Canadian
Forces Atlantic, under the direction
of LCdr Ray Murray, was joined by
the 14 Wing Volunteer Band and the
36 Brigade Band, in a repertoire that
ranged from brisk military marches
such as Clash of the Ironclads, to
popular crowd pleasers such as
music from Pirates of the Caribbean,
directed by the Band Chief, CPO2
Dany Bilodeau.
RAdm Maddison brought several
veterans onstage for introduction to
the audience. First was Capt Angus
MacDonald, a retired merchant
sailor and veteran of the Second
World War, followed by MS Charles
Doucet of HMCS Charlottetown,
whom RAdm Maddison described as
“the kind of leader we have today in
your Canadian Forces.”
In concert, the spotlight shone on
several members of the CF and DND
community, including singer and
Formation Administration staffer
Michelle Durling, who belted out a
soulful version of the Motown hit
River Deep, Mountain High. She
was followed by CPO1 Keith Davidson,
coxn of HMCS Ville de Quebec,
who proved himself a talented blues
singer with his smooth performance
of Feeling Good.
A special guest for the occasion
was LCol Scott Attridge, Supervisor
of Music for CF Bands, directing two
pieces including Song for Canada
with singer Liz Rigney.
The 12 Wing Shearwater Pipes
and Drums, under the direction of
pipe major Sgt Malcolm Odell
opened the second half with a robust
selection of pipe tunes including
Scotland the Brave.
Solo moments by the band members
were among the highlights of
the evening. PO1 Stuart MacLean
directed the band in accompanying
singer Liz Rigney for the song
Into The West, arranged by PO2
Roy Kaighin.
As a prelude to the Chick Corea
jazz classic, titled Spain, PO2 Larry
Bjornson, a string bass player, played
a dynamic version of the Concierto
de Aranjuez, by the composer
Joaquin Rodrigo. Not to be outdone,
saxophonist PO2 Mitch LeBlanc
played a jazzy rendition of the Beatles
hit Maybe I’m Amazed.
Other guests included Wendy Birt
singing the ballad Someone to Watch
Over Me, and the Nova Voce men’s
choir, directed by Terry Hurrell, with
stirring versions of I Vow to Thee,
My Country, Lili Marlene, Fogarty’s
Cove and Look to the Day.

CF H Svcs C (A)
As the Operational Trauma and Stress Support
Centre (OTSSC) in Halifax celebrates
its 10-year history this year, the most noticeable
change has been the willingness of military
personnel to seek help sooner for mental
health problems.
LCdr Ken Cooper, Psychiatrist and Clinical
Leader of Mental Health Services at CF Health
Services Centre (Atlantic), said “Many of our
patients are now coming to us sooner and without
the reluctance and shame we used to see.”
He believes intensive outreach, support from
higher levels, and education of the troops and
the chain of command have made a significant
difference in reducing the stigma which made
it so difficult in the past for members to come
forward for treatment. Families are also more
aware of the need for MH services and of the
CF’s capacity to offer quality support.
Dr. Cooper stated “In the OTSSC, we treat
mental health problems that are directly related
to military service, and one of the most
important lessons we try to convey is that the
sooner someone seeks help, the better the
chance for an early recovery”.
The OTSSC (Atlantic) opened its doors on
August 16, 1999 in Willow Park, as one of five
such centres across the CF. This initiative
reflected the CF’s increased recognition that
unique stressors related to military operations
were contributing to a wide spectrum of problems
for its members and their families, in psychological,
emotional, spiritual and relationship
realms.
Over its 10-year history, nearly 1100 clients
have received services at the OTSSC, and clinicians
have noticed the tremendous gains
that can be achieved in the treatment of trauma
stress.
Alice Dean, Senior Social Worker, said she
and her colleagues have seen many clients
gaining back the health and quality of life that
was lost for them and their families due to
psychological trauma. “The credit goes to
the patients and their families.” she said,
“because the work is hard and takes months
or even years.”
Dean is one of a team of 13 clinicians including
psychiatrists, social workers, psychologists,
chaplains, mental health nurses and
administrative support personnel, up from six
since the program began.
Initially the OTSSC was set up as an independent
program. In 2002, as part of the implementation
of a new Mental Health Model for
the CF, it was integrated into a Mental Health
Services Department, along with Addiction
Services (formerly the Addiction Rehabilitation
Centre), General Mental Health and Psychosocial
Services. This new model allows for
improved collaboration with medical staff,
case managers and other providers. The Halifax
OTSSC treats veterans as well as serving
members and a satellite program was operated
at CFB Gagetown until that clinic was able to
increase its own services. The OTSSC also provides
educational outreach services and support
to community providers and military units
within the Atlantic Provinces, and also conducts
research and program evaluation.
Improvements have been initiated over the
OTSSC’s history. Based on identified needs, the
clinicians developed a week-long educational
program (now called the Awareness and Skills
Development Course) for patients and their
spouses, and an evening Spousal Support Program,
focusing on self-care regarding Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and its
impact on families. Clients, current and former
staff, external community providers, family
members, and supportive leadership have all
played a key role in the success of the program
in making treatment more accessible to those
who need it.
Currently the promotion of mental health
services for CF members and their families
is championed at the highest levels. The
future vision for the OTSSC includes maintaining
a high calibre of MH services for a
population no longer stigmatized by the need
for these services.
For information on the OTSSC, please contact
Realtor thanks military community with cash back
Since January 17, 2008, many,
“I know they’re out of pocket,”
many military families have
said Keith about the expenses of
bought and sold their homes with
realtor Keith Tannahill and Keith has
saved them literally thousands of
dollars of their money when selling,
and given cash back when buying.
A number of deployed CF members
who have read online about
Keith’s offer have contacted him to
make inquiries to get information in
order to prepare for the time when
they return and are considering
moving to a new home.
If you are posted to or from Halifax,
or even if you are moving to a
new home within this area, Keith
Tannahill can help put extra cash in
your pocket.
If you purchase your home
through Keith, he will give you his
cash to buyer incentive.
This applies to all MLS listings in
the Halifax and surrounding areas.
Keith Tannahill is an experienced
full-time real estate agent offering
qualified professional service with
all his listings on the MLS system.
He can offer you all the benefits of
MLS with advertising and promotion
Keith and he writes an acceptable
offer from a qualified buyer, he will
give you, the seller, two per cent of
the purchase price.
For example, if Keith helps you
chase your home for $200,000,
you’ll receive $1,000 cash back.
During the past 25 years, Keith
and his wife Linda have worked
with military families posted in and
moving time.
Even though the military covers
much of the expense for posting,
Keith said he knows money is
always helpful—whether it is to
military members at moving time.
“Regardless of how much they are
compensated by the DND for their
posting, there are always extras.”
Other real estate companies give
travel miles worth less than $200 on
a $200,000 purchase. However, you
get $1,000 or more back, available to
spend when you like and as you like.
“There are no conditions,” said
Keith. “You can use the extra money
any way you wish, because it’s
not the DND but me, Keith Tannahill,
giving back to the members
and their families, who in turn give
so much.”
Keith said he’s glad to do his part
and hopes his cash back offer will
support CF members and their families
at a time when they will appreciate
having extra money to manage
their expenses.
“There’s no obligation to deal
with me,” said Keith. “You can deal
with anybody else you want, but if
you deal with me you are going to
get money in your pockets to say,
‘Thank you so much.’”
plus the added incentive of his sell your home for $200,000 you will out of the Halifax area. During that quickly replace a broken appliance, Keith can be reached at
cash back offer.
Should you list your home with
receive between $2,000 and $4,000
cash back, and if he helps you pur-
time, they’ve come to appreciate
the importance of extra cash at
Lost to the Maritime Command Museum
By Benjamin J. DeLong
Trident Staff
The Maritime Command Museum
has had its troubles: it has
lacked funding, employees, and
sufficient attention for a long time.
Through the last 37 years, there was
only one woman who kept it going.
Marilyn Gurney, 61, was proud to
be the museum’s director, but as of
Friday, October 30, 2009, and after
a long employment at the museum,
Gurney has retired.
She stills plans to work as a volunteer
at the museum every Wednesday,
but also sees her retirement as an
opportunity to travel. She would like
to visit her daughter and grandchildren
in Saint John, New Brunswick,
and she plans to travel across Canada,
America, and Europe with a
friend from the Annapolis Valley.
Gurney was honoured on her last
day with a small open house function
in the Maritime Command
Museum. A few attendees came in
costume, because they were permitted
to wear their Halloween costumes.
Cdr Lin Paddock, Formation
Administration Officer, dressed as
a pirate, complete with a sword he
Capt(N) John Newton, Cdr Lin Paddock, dressed as a pirate for Halloween, and Ellen Rhind listen as Marilyn
Gurney speaks at her retirement function on Friday, October 30, at the Maritime Command Museum.
borrowed from the Maritime Command
Museum.
“Marilyn has been an important
part of preserving where we have
been, where we are, and where we
are going,” Cdr Paddock said, signalling
the importance of the museum
to the Navy. Many people spoke
a word of thanks to Gurney, either
because of the importance of the
museum, or the helpfulness of Gurney,
herself. One person explained it
BENJAMIN J. DELONG
like this: “It’s not so much a question
of ‘what’s in the Maritime Command
Museum’, it’s more like, ‘what does
Marilyn know about this’”
Gurney started working at the
Maritime Command Museum on
January 2, 1974, as a Reservist and
joined the public service in 1982 as
the museum’s curator, and later its
director. During her stay, Gurney
would create several exhibits, and
write articles and books such as The
King’s Yard: An Illustrated History
of the Halifax Dockyard. She’s
written various articles on historical
ships and buildings, and helped
students and professional writers
who would come by the museum.
Notably, she created the CF Diversity
display, which features Canadians
of visible minorities in the military
from 1605. This exhibit is now
available CF-wide.
This was Gurney’s one and only
full-time job. “And it was a hard
job,” according to Capt(N) John
Newton, CFB Halifax Base Commander.
“We were always looking
for temps or students to take positions
at the museum.” While many
employees had left the museum
without putting much time into
it, Gurney stayed and helped conserve
the historical knowledge
the museum had to offer the Canadian
Navy.
“That’s a tribute to Marilyn,” said
Capt(N) Newton. “Thirty-seven
years is pretty special. The one
thing we got right was Marilyn. We
didn’t pay you enough, or pay
enough attention to the museum. It
was you who kept it going, and you
put up with us. The credit is with
you. Through all these years of
employment, and lack of funding,
you stuck with it, and told us to stay
the course. I know every one of the
museums is suffering the same
problems. The people who take care
of them, like you, are what keeps
them going.”
Gurney received plaques, awards,
gifts, and letters from friends and coworkers,
even politicians such as
Nova Scotia’s Premier. Darrell Dexter
and Prime Minister Stephen
Harper. Many other museum directors
wrote her letters as well: letters
from the Museum of the Atlantic,
Navy History and Heritage, Naval
Museum of Canada, and the Canadian
Military Engineers Museum. She
also received letters from Cdr Corrigan,
former Formation Administration
Officer, and Cdr Moss, Captain
of HMCS Regina. There were many
people touched by the helpful and
continuous service of Gurney.
“I see people today that I’ve
known for a long time,” Gurney
said, as she began to name a few people,
recalling their history together.
“I won’t say goodbye, because it’s
been said to mean forever; so I’ll just
say see you around, and thank you
very much.” The audience clapped
as she left the podium to talk to as
many people as she could.
“There are a lot of exhibits,” Gurney
said, “always new and exciting.
Either way it won’t be my decision
what goes on here after I’m gone. I
did everything I could, and put on
every display that I wanted.” There
will be an open competition for a
museum worker to replace Gurney.
Partnership brings two
communities together
By Virginia Beaton
Trident staff
Neptune Theatre and DND
have history together,
according to George Pothitos,
Neptune’s artistic director.
‘There’s been an interest
and a connection between us
for a long time,” stated Pothitos.
Now in his first full
season at Neptune, Pothitos
noted “DND is a neighbour to
us and we’re all working for
our community. We do it in
totally different ways and I
think it’s something great,
that our two organizations
are both working toward the
common good.”
Capt(N) John Newton, Base
Commander CFB Halifax, is
on Neptune’s board of directors
and Pothitos stated
“Capt(N) Newton is a strong
advocate of children’s causes
and education.”
Pothitos said during a conversation
with Capt(N) Newton,
they discussed how theatre
classes could assist children
develop language and
self-expression skills. “It’s
very helpful if they have a way
to express their frustrations,
for example, so it doesn’t turn
to violence.” Having working
extensively with children in
theatre during his previous job
in Sudbury, Pothitos observed
“At an early age, they’re learning
to work together. They
have 20 minutes to create a
play, five of them get together
and it’s amazing to watch
them come up with ideas and
do it without arguing.”
Theatre classes, such as
improvisation, are also helpful
for adults who need to work on
skills such as confidence when
speaking in front of groups,
Pothitos observed. “What’s so
wonderful about these classes
is that they free the imagination...
You’re not judged as to
whether it’s right or wrong,
good or bad.”
Neptune offers a 20 per cent
discount to CF/DND personnel,
which applies not only to
theatre tickets but also to the
classes offered through the
theatre school.
According to Pothitos, “The
DND discount is our way of
saying thank you for the work
you do. Thanks for being such
a strong presence and important
element in our community.
We want to do whatever
we can to make ourselves
more accessible.”
Pothitos is currently directing
rehearsals for Neptune’s
2009 holiday show, a new
musical of Charles Dickens’
classic A Christmas Carol.
The story of Ebenezer
Scrooge, Bob Cratchit and
Tiny Tim is well-known, and
Pothitos said “I wanted to
have a new take on the story,
so I commissioned a new
musical score.” Pothitos said
“It was the theme of redemption
that I liked. It’s never to
late to change, and Scrooge is
able to change.” The poverty
Dickens depicts in his novels
is comparable to today, which
adds relevance, Pothitos commented.
“Scrooge said, Are
there not poorhouses ...You
still hear people talking that
way today about welfare.”
AChristmas Carol opens on
November 28 and runs until
January 3, 2010.
Pothitos noted that Neptune’s
Youth Performance
Company, the theatre school’s
intensive training program
will stage. Brigadoon, a musical
about two tourists who
stumble into a magical Scottish
village. Public shows start
Changes in hours for CF Halifax sports facilities
By Virginia Beaton
Trident staff
Military, DND and NPF
personnel in Formation
Halifax have noticed the
recent changes in the hours of
fitness and sports facilities
and arenas.
As part of CF Halifax
Personnel Support Programs
(PSP), these fitness and sports
centers, arenas and community
recreation departments are
part of PSP’s mission to provide
the best morale and welfare
programs to the CF community
in a visible, viable and
valuable way.
The changes, implemented
as of October 30, 2009, are
connected to the Military
Sports Wage Grant (MSWG),
which was created in 1997 as
a supplement to Base Fund
when the PSP department
was created. The MSWG is
used for wages in support of
operating fitness, sports and
recreation programs and
opening facilities in support
of those programs.
In response to the recent
clawback of the MSWG by the
Director General of Personnel
Support Programs (DGPFSS)
effective from September 4,
2009 until March 31, 2010,
PSP Halifax has had to assess
the current programs and services
and provide solutions that
would ensure the least impact
to the CF community while
maintaining services.
As a result, the decision has
been made to reduce the hours
at the Fleet Fitness and Sports
Centre during non-peak times,
and to enhance the gym floor
rental program in both STAD-
PLEX and the Shearwater
Fitness and Sports Centre
between the hours of 6 and
9 p.m.
Each year, units within CFB
Halifax are faced with various
funding limitations and planners
and decision makers must
look at, and weigh many factors
in addition to financial
considerations, when deciding
whether or not to go ahead
with a planned activity.
Through the CF Health and
Fleet Gym.
Physical Fitness Strategy,
health and physical fitness
remain a priority and PSP Halifax
has made every effort to
provide solutions that ensure
the least impact to the CF community
and to this strategy.
In an effort to maintain the
current hours at the Shearwater
Fitness and Sports Centre
and STADPLEX, effective as
of October 30, 2009, an
enhanced gym floor rental
program was introduced. As
a result, military personnel
and gym activity pass users
will have limited availability
to the gym floors on evenings
and weekends.
Current Community Recreation
aquatic programs will
continue as usual until the
end of the fall session but
casual swimming at STAD-
PLEX will be cancelled. Availability
and times of the winter
PTE JOHANIE MAHEU, FORMATION IMAGING SERVICES, HALIFAX
session will be reviewed and
the CF community will be
informed as information
becomes available.
The Physical Fitness Maintenance
Grant (PFMG) has
been providing funding to
physical fitness departments
within the CF community for
over 35 years. It is used for the
regular maintenance of physical
fitness equipment and the
purchasing of equipment and
uniforms in support of the CF
sports program. The recent
clawback of the PFMG by the
DGPFSS may result in PSP
Halifax discontinuing some of
its planned maintenance and
replacement schedule of existing
physical fitness equipment.
PSP Halifax will make
every effort to find alternative
solutions to this funding cutback
and at the end of the fiscal
year, DGPFSS will review
the possibility of reinstating
both grants.
Whether we drive to work, wash
Les blues
de l’automne
This is a wonderful area and
the process of finding your
new home could be easier if
you give me a call.
Padre’s Corner
Par Capt Jean-Sébastien
L
’automne, quelle belle
saison. Des couleurs riches
de tous côtés, les pommes
et les citrouilles qui se
pointent le nez, l’abondance
des récoltes, des décors à
couper le souffle. Qu’il fait
beau et bon à ce temps-ci de
l’année dans notre coin de
pays. Toutefois, il semblerait
que pour certaines personnes
l’automne ne soit pas un
cadeau.
influencer notre humeur.
À la vue des feuilles qui
tombent des arbres, avez-vous
déjà eu l’impression que votre
moral en prenait pour son
compte N’ayez crainte, car
vous n’êtes pas seul à ressentir
les effets de l’automne
dans votre quotidien. Certaines
études révèlent qu’annuellement,
un bon nombre de
personnes sont affectées par
les changements de saisons. Il
semblerait que ce phénomène
commun s’explique du point
de vue biologique par de simples
ajustements hormonaux.
Toutefois, certains comportements
peuvent aider:
prendre l’air, sortir en plein
jour, chercher la lumière et
adopter un mode de vie plus
sain. Et quand le soleil ne se
pointe pas le nez, trouvezvous
d’autres sources de
lumière pour le cœur : un repas
avec des amis, un bon livre,
une activité en famille. Si vous
avez de la difficulté, malgré
tout, à vous ajuster à ces
temps de l’année, d’autres
ressources existent et votre
médecin est certainement bien
placé pour vous éclairer à ce
sujet. Je vous souhaite, à
l’approche de l’hiver, de trouver
vos propres sources de
lumière pour ne pas laisser le
temps et l’amertume prendre
le dessus sur votre joie de
vivre. À bientôt.
I have experienced the ups and down
of relocation for more than 25 years
and I am well equipped to steer you
Addictions Awareness Week November 16 to 20, 2009
By Health Promotion Services Staff
According to the CF Health and
Physical Fitness Strategy, an
addiction-free lifestyle is one “that
does not compromise health and performance
with behaviours such as
alcohol abuse, illicit drug use, problem
gambling, and tobacco use.”
This Strategy also says that developing
an addiction-free lifestyle
means, first, choosing a lifestyle that
is about moderation or that strives to
stay within reasonable limits; not too
excessive or extreme. It also suggests
that “developing effective coping
skills” will go a long way in
reducing the likelihood that you will
become involved in these potentially
harmful behaviours.
So, what does this really mean
How do you know what is reasonable
when we talk about alcohol,
illicit drug use, gambling and tobacco
Here are some guidelines and
suggestions that have been developed
by researchers and practitioners
in this field. They are meant to
help you make decisions about the
lifestyle you choose.
Alcohol use: An Addiction-Free
Lifestyle is one that limits alcohol
intake. The Low Risk Drinking
Guidelines (LRDG) are suggestions
to assist healthy adults to make
informed decisions about their
alcohol consumption. They describe
drinking practices that minimize
alcohol-related risks. They suggest
the following guide for maximum
daily and weekly drinking limits
within these guidelines is a good
way to remain healthy.
2 No more than 2 standard
drinks on any one day.
9 Women: up to 9 standard
drinks a week.
14 Men: up to 14 standard
Illicit drug use: The Canadian
Forces strives to maintain an
impairment-free workplace for
many reasons, including safety and
legal concerns. Therefore, choosing
to use illicit drugs means making a
decision to accept the various risks
from the drug use itself; risks to
your job readiness, as well as to your
mental and physical health; along
with the risk of putting your career
and the safety of others in jeopardy.
Gambling: Gambling, like alcohol,
is considered a behaviour that
can be done in moderation, although
there is a risk of problematic use
developing. These tips for responsible
gambling are suggestions to help
people who choose to gamble make
the experience safe and enjoyable.
They are:
1. Have a plan. Before you start
gambling, have an idea about the
kind of experience you want to have.
2. Decide how much time and
money you want to spend on gambling
and stick to it.
3. If you lose money, never try to
get it back by going over your limit.
Never borrow money to gamble.
When the amount is gone, call it a
night and have fun another day.
4. Don’t gamble to escape your
troubles. It’s a form of entertainment
and is supposed to be fun.
If you decide to gamble for
fun, stay within your limits and
Tobacco use: Research has consistently
shown that there is no safe
exposure to any type of tobacco
and almost all use results in addiction.
An addiction-free lifestyle is
one that does not include tobacco
use, including the use of smokefree
tobacco products such as chewing
tobacco.
Blooms are about
more than flowers
By Jeremy Gammon,
Staff Officer Natural Resource
Management FSE
and Chelsey Fougere
MARLANT Communities in Bloom
(CiB) representatives met with judges
from the National CiB Program on August 13
to lead a tour of DND properties in the Halifax
area including: Willow Park, Windsor
Park, Dockyard, Shearwater, Hartlen Point
Golf Course, Stadacona, Admiralty Garden,
Lorne Terrace, and R.A. Park. This was an
excellent opportunity to showcase the many
efforts of DND and CF employees to improve
our local community both on an individual
and unit basis.
CiB is a Canadian non-profit organization
committed to fostering civic pride, environmental
responsibility and beautification
through community participation and the
challenge of competition. MARLANT was
judged in eight different categories, which
include: tidiness, environmental awareness,
community involvement, natural and cultural
heritage conservation, tree/urban forest
management, landscaped areas, turf and
groundcovers, and floral displays.
The tour started at Formation Construction
Engineering (FCE), with a slideshow to
familiarize the judges with the current FCE
operations and activities associated with the
CiB program. Bob Lewis, CiB judge, said
with gratitude, “This is the first time anyone
has taken the time to create a slideshow for
us. It was extremely helpful and a great way
to start off the tour.”
As a CiB partner with the Halifax Regional
Municipality (HRM), MARLANT and HRM
met at Hartlen Point Golf Course for a BBQ
during the tour to take the opportunity for both
sets of judges to sit and speak with program
participants in a relaxed setting. The tour
included input from many MARLANT units
such as FSE, FCE, MFRC, LCC, PSP, CFHA,
Public Affairs and the Maritime Museum.
Quite an improvement
over the three blooms
awarded last year.
At the end of the tour, the judges voiced
how pleased they were with the many
improvements MARLANT had made from
the previous year. Thanks to the efforts and
support put forth by the volunteers from
many units and organizations, MARLANT
received four blooms out of a possible five,
a special mention for Community Outreach
and was a National Finalist in the category
of Landscaped Areas. Quite an improvement
over the three blooms awarded last year.
Congratulations to all personnel for helping
to make our base one of the most beautiful
in Canada.
TRIDENT, NOVEMBER 16, 2009
To the heights of a mountain in Bolivia
By Virginia Beaton
Trident staff
One of the plans 2Lt Benoit Godin made
when he graduated from Royal Military
College in the spring of 2009, was to go
mountain climbing in the Andes.
With his classmates, 2Lt Eve Boyce and
2Lt Samantha Laplante, 2Lt Godin went to
Bolivia during the last two weeks of August.
“We planned it together,” stated 2Lt Godin.
“Our dream was to climb two mountains
while we were there.”
They flew into La Paz, the country’s capital
city, which is 12,000 feet above sea level.
“We stayed there for a while to acclimatize.”
Then they were off to climb Huayna Potosi,
which is approximately 19,900 feet high.
“It was a really great trip,” stated 2Lt
Godin, adding that the scenery and the views
from the mountain were beautiful. Though he
described it as “not a tough technical climb,”
he and his companions wore crampons on
their footwear and were roped together.
“During that time, we were the only group on
the mountain who weren’t being guided.”
The climb took place in several stages,
with base camp at 15,000 feet.
During the days, the temperature would
rise to 25 or 30°C in the sunshine, according
to 2Lt Godin. The day they climbed to
The three Canadian officers were the only group on Huayna Pelosi that wasn’t being guided.
Huayana Potosi’s summit, the three officers
started very early in the morning and
after summiting, they descended with their
next goal being to climb Illimani, which at
21,200 feet high is the second highest peak
in Bolivia.
But regrettably, the trio could not complete
their route up Illimani. “Altitude sickness is
a big concern,” according to 2Lt Godin. 2Lt
Laplante had trouble with altitude sickness
and 2Lt Boyce has frostbitten toes, which was
a concern “because she’d had frostbite
already, two years earlier.” Faced with these
potential difficulties, they ended that climb
before completing it.
2Lt Godin said he plans to return and hopefully
climb Illimani again, this time to the
summit. “I’d like to go again soon but it
depends on my training and whether I can
get leave.”
An aspiring pilot with a degree in aeronautical
engineering, 2Lt Godin works hard on
his fitness with a routine that includes running
and cross fit training.
He started climbing several years ago,
while he was doing on the job training
at Comox.
A casual meeting with a SAR tech named
Cpl Mike Nielson got 2Lt Godin interested in
climbing. “We started talking and he asked me
if I climbed and I said yes. It’s been in the gym
climbing a few times but the next thing I knew,
we went on a few weekend trips and he’s been
my mentor ever since. He’s very knowledgeable
and very well informed about everything
to do with climbing.” 2Lt Godin currently
works at 12 Wing HQ in A3 Plans and Tasks.
Mooseheads impress the kids at Shearwater Arena
what an excited group kids
as the Halifax Mooseheads
For the second year in a
As the audience banged Air
were treated to several fastpaced
the formal part of
the practice, children had
the players.
“I like coming here because
this is the arena I practice
COTW badminton: what a racquet
By Margaret Craig
PSP Fitness and Sports Instructor,
STADPLEX
Last spring, the sport of badminton
seemed to be dying at
CFB Stadacona. The base could not
even field a full team of badminton
players to compete at the Atlantic
Region Badminton tournament.
Six months later, badminton
seems to be alive and well on the
base. Twenty four participants
played over 40 games of badminton
from October 26 to 30 during COTW
Badminton. Jon Berg, Sports Coordinator,
commented “This year’s
COTW Badminton has been the most
intense badminton tournament I have
witnessed in a very long time.”
The A division in particular was
extremely competitive this year.
After round robin play, there was a
able to pull off a huge upset defeating
Robert Yi of CFNES, who has
dominate the COTW Badminton title
since 2006, to capture his first title.
Pte Ku, who played competitively in
high school and throughout university
but has played little badminton
since, dominated the match against
Yi 21-12 and 21-13. Jon Berg
encourages players like Pte Ku, who
may not be playing currently, to pick
up a racquet and get some playing
time in before regional team selection
in February. “Base playdowns
will be held in February and we are
looking forward to these players and
many more to show the nation what
CFB Halifax’s badminton community
is all about.”
Other COTW Badminton winners
were Jeff Roy, MARLANT (B Seed),
Dale Foley, FMFCS (C Seed) and
Tommy Knott, MARLANT (D Seed).
Winning two divisions allowed
MARLANT to capture the 09/10
COTW Badminton trophy and move
them within 55 points of first place
CFNES in the COTW standings.
Serving the Needs of Military Families Since 1987
By Virginia Beaton
Trident staff
This was a good season for the Formation
Halifax men’s soccer team.
First they won the regional championship
in August 2009, then in September
the Atlantic team took the trophy at
the CF national championship for the first
time since 1994.
“The level of play at the nationals has
gotten higher,” stated team member
MCpl Nathan Rutherford.
Over time, as soccer has become a
more popular CF sport, the number
of players in the Formation has
increased. “The players are getting
good support from their units, too,” noted
MCpl Rutherford.
He stated that in the regional competition,
the Halifax team bested the CFB
Gagetown team, which often dominates
regional soccer, to win the finals by way
of penalty kicks.
At the nationals, the Atlantic team
“was in a scoring drought during the
round robin,” according to MCpl Rutherford.
“We had a couple of losses in a row
before we pushed through.
The Atlantic team won its first game
against Quebec, then lost to the Prairie
team 0 to 1 and Pacific 0 to 1 before winning
2 to 0 against Ontario. In semifinal
play, the Atlantic team slipped past
Ontario 3 to 2 and proceeded to the finals
after an exciting game that included two
goals by Petawawa in the last five minutes
of regular play, followed by overtime
and penalty kicks that earned the
Atlantic team its semifinal victory.
Meanwhile, the Prairie team defeated the
Pacific team 2 to 1 in semifinals.
In the finals, the Atlantic team met
the Prairie team. “It probably wasn’t the
most entertaining game to watch,” stated
MCpl Rutherford. “We controlled
the middle of the field.” The final score
was 1 to 0, with the Atlantic team winning
its first men’s national soccer title
in 15 years.
The Formation Halifax men’s soccer
team practices from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays
and Thursdays at the Stadacona Fitness
