Busy year for the 12 Wing Pipe Band
By WO Dan Smith
Pipe Band Major
It’s been a quite a year for the 12 Wing
Pipe Band.
The group, which will be entering its
10th year of operation in 2006, performed
across the Maritimes, Quebec,
Ontario and Bermuda.
This year started somewhat early in
that we were able to join with the Black
Watch Pipes and Drums for their annual
participation in the St. Patrick’s Day
Parade in Montreal.
This is one of the oldest continuous
parades in North America and is attended
by thousands of spectators.
April marked the 50th anniversary
of the opening of the MacDonald
Bridge. The Regular Force element of
the Black Watch originally opened the
bridge in 1955.
May was our annual pilgrimage to
the Apple Blossom Parade in Kentville,
where we combined with the 14 Wing
Pipe Band to form a very large Air
Force contingent band, which is always
an impressive sight.
June saw the Canadian Football
League’s first visit to Halifax for a wellattended
exhibition game.
The Canadian Forces were featured
throughout the evening, which included
a performance by the 12 Wing Pipe
Band in the pre-game show.
Another first came in July when the
Pipes and Drums were invited to play at
the closing ceremonies for the first day
of play at the Ladies Professional Golf
Association (LPGA) tournament, held
at Glen Arbour Golf Course in Bedford.
For those not aware, in addition to
the regular parades and changes of
command, the 12 Wing and 14 Wing
Members of the 12 and 14 Wing bands perform.
bands combine to compete at highland
games during the summer months
as the Maritime Air Force Pipes
and Drums.
This takes up most weekends in July
and August but is a great source of pride
for the members of both bands even
though it is quite demanding and
requires a greater level of commitment.
The band fared well and managed to
place at all the competitions, winning the
overall prize for dress and deportment.
Another 50th anniversary celebration
occurred at the Canso Causeway
in August, again attended by the 12
Wing Band.
We finished off the month by traveling
to Quebec City for the invitation
only Quebec Military Music Festival
which was a whirlwind of public concerts,
parades, and a Tattoo at the former
home of the Quebec Nordiques.
Generally, the end of August would
signify the end of the performance
season.
There would be a few weeks of leave,
then into the fall with the Battle of
Britain and Remembrance Day Parades.
This year was a little different since our
friends at 14 Wing had been invited to
participate in a Tattoo in Bermuda.
As anyone in the military knows,
inviting and going are two different
things, but after a series of hurdles and
a lot of practices, in mid-October a
Canadian contingent of 65 musicians
was ready to depart for Bermuda.
For the next six days more rehearsals
were held to coordinate five pipe
bands from across Canada and Bermuda
and four military bands from the
United Kingdom, Jamaica, Bermuda
and Canada.
The Tattoo thrilled sell-out audiences
over two consecutive evenings and
even a torrential downpour on the finale
of the last evening of the show couldn’t
dampen the spirits of the spectators or
the performers.
There was plenty of time to visit the
island and a two-day delay in our return
to Canada didn’t hurt either.
Everyone returned tanned and
relaxed, recharged for the coming cold
winter months, and regular work and
band routines.
