This is our first time sending the Halifax Military Family Resource Centre’s (HMFRC) Kisbie as part of the Trident. As we have been mentioning over the past few months, we are looking forward to moving to a combined publication that will be distributed by the Halifax MFRC to our mailing list and will also be available in the many places Trident can be found. Military Families—The Strength Behind the Uniform. Family March break activities (March 13-17) The HMFRC will be offering family March break activities again this year. We have many activities planned for families. Monday there is a Pig Jig that includes singing, dancing and face painting for children. The performance is dazzling, energetic and entertaining. The cost for this is $2 per person. Tuesday, try glow in the dark bowling. Come join us for some fun and spend time with family and friends. The fee is $3 per person. We have reserved the Stadacona Bowling Alley from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Wednesday we have scheduled a family Fear Factor. Everyone will have the opportunity to get involved and have lots of fun. Don’t be afraid, we won’t make you eat bugs. We will also have many challenging games for everyone. Families can hang out together, laugh, and have the chance to win the HMFRC Fear Factor. This event is $3 person. Thursday we will have creative zones set up for all age groups. These activities are fun, interactive and trendy. These zones will be child and family led. Come check us out, you never know what kind of fun things we may do. Bring along a friend and have some fun. The cost is $ 3 per person. Friday we will be heading to the Stadacona pool for a family swim and pizza lunch. This activity will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Swimming is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and lunch will be served after. The cost for this cool activity is $5 per person. If you are interested in any family activity or have any questions, please register your family by March 8, 2006. Remember spaces are limited so register soon. Children’s March break camp What are your plans during March break This year the HMFRC will be offering camp for the whole week. This new program is designed for children ages five to 12. Our camp will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, and the cost is $85 for the week. We also offer a great family rate. Location is 38 MacDougall Street. Each day is jammed pack with activities for everyone. We have so many cool activities planned for the week. Come hang out. Hope to see you there. Spaces are limited, so please register by March 3, 2006. Programs for Adults AWork of Heart. As a follow up to Strutting Your Stuff—A Fashion Show about First Impressions, Halifax Military Family Resource Centre is pleased to present A Work of Heart—Creating Impact. This one-day series of workshops focuses on providing participants with tips and tricks to create their most favourable impact in the job market, whether it be to land that new position or a new career. Military Families— The Strength Behind the Uniform. Come and explore the possibilities on February 24, 2006, where Confidence Counts. The cost of the full day of workshops is $25 for military members and their families and DND employees. The general public is welcome at $40 for the day. Nutrition breaks and a light lunch will be provided. Pre-registration is necessary by February 20. Dates: March 4, 11, 25 and April 1, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Fee: $25, register by February 25. Participants learn word processing to write personal correspondence, keep personal records, provide support for a home-based business, write term papers and reports, résumés and covering letters. Topics include preparing documents, enhancing and customizing documents. Lessons are given in a friendly and non-threatening learning environment. $25 Scrapbooking. Wednesday, March 8, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Fee: $5 for military family member, $7 for non-military. Childcare $5 per family, free for deployed families, register by March 6, 2006. Have you tried scrapbooking Would you like to learn Are you already a scrapbooker who would like to join others You are welcome to join us for this evening of scrapbooking. This session will cover the basics of scrapbooking and introduce new techniques. Scrapbooks are a great way of creativity recording your accomplishments and activities, or your children’s growth and activities, deployments and moves. Participants are asked to bring at least 15 to 25 pictures. Desktop publishing with Microsoft Publisher. Dates: March 20 and 27 6 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Fee: $25, register by March 13. Participants learn to produce brochures for business/home business, create newsletters, and business/calling cards. Aspects of good design and use of colour, fonts etc. are discussed. Come out to our Desk Top Publishing workshop and learn how to amaze yourself and your co-workers with your new-found talents. Women’s self defense. Saturday, March 25, 2006 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $15/person, $25/motherdaughter rate, registerby March 20, 2006. Come join us for an interactive workshop, which empowers women to trust their instincts, avoid assault situations and learn uncomplicated physical techniques to disable an assailant. The focus is on teaching women to be resourceful rather than relying solely on physical strength. Mothers and Daughters (12 years and up) are invited to come together to this event and pay only $25 for 2 spots. Participants are asked to wear comfortable clothing that they can move in. Programs for children & youth Saturday Childcare: Spend a relaxing Saturday afternoon doing coffee, watching a movie or catching up on some shopping. Saturday Casual Childcare is for children birth to 12 years. These opportunities permit children to socialize with their peers, play with different toys, do activities such as play games, create artwork, etc. while being supervised by professional Childcare Staff. At GymBoree, you and your children will have the opportunity to play and interact with other children and their families. Some activities offered during this time are tunnel crawl, hula-hoop, circle time with action songs, hopscotch, snack and more. A special area is dedicated to infants with mats and interactive toys to enjoy with their parents. This program is offered on various Saturdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. To register for the next session please call 427-7788 as spaces fill up quickly. Dad and Me: Are you a Dad or male caregiver looking for more ways to spend quality time with your child/children Here’s a great opportunity for just that. The Halifax MFRC is pleased to once again offer our Dad & Me program where Dads/male caregivers can interact with their children and develop rapport with other Dads/Male Caregivers in a fun-filled atmosphere. Whether we offer activities on site or off, we will give you something to anticipate. Don’t miss out on these awesome activities. Open to all ages. Coming up in March, Glow in the Dark Bowling and in April we will be having some springtime fun with gardening. Sunday, March 12 - Stadacona Bowling Alley 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. $3 per person. NEW! My First Reading Club: Join us and discover a gift of life long learning. My First Reading Club promotes literacy to families and children between the ages infant to five years through means of age appropriate book packages put together by staff and volunteers of the Halifax MFRC which parents and children take home to share. Please pre-register and pre-pay for HMFRC programs including Childcare. From birth, babies enjoy sounds and the one sound they most enjoy is the human voice. When sharing books together, read out loud to your children; ask questions as this builds on language, thinking skills and imagination. Reading—Food for your Brain... My First Reading Club Ages: Infant to 5 years. Thursday mornings 11a.m. to 12 p.m. Halifax MFRC. Casual Childcare: Need some time for you or have an appointment Perhaps you have some shopping to do. We have the answer. HMFRC offers Casual Childcare. To make an appointment up to one week in advance please contact 722-4663. Times: Monday to Wednesday and Friday 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Cost: $3 per hour for the first child and $1.50 per hour for the next sibling. Preschool: Spaces Still Available... Our part day preschool is looking for children aged 3-5 years to join our fun filled afternoon program. Sessions run from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at a cost of $9 per session. Please come and join us for some fun learning. For more details please call Julie Patterson, Daycare Director at 722- 4664. HMFRC offers a licensed Preschool Program for children ages 3-5 years from September until June. This program provides a stimulating curriculum that fosters cognitive, emotional, physical and social development of children. Activities are led by a qualified Early Childhood Educator and include artwork, songs, stories, a music program and field trips. Parent & Tot: You are the most important person in your child’s life. Parents can and do influence all areas of their child’s development in countless ways every day. Our Parent & Tot program is offered at the Halifax MFRC on Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for only $1 per child. Our program offers parents and their children the opportunity to engage and explore in activities together such as art, circle, songs, finger plays, snack and free play fostering their development. Delivery of this program is a collaborative effort between parents and staff and is an excellent time to model and share positive language and learning with other military families and their children.
