Tickets on sale
for second
annual Fleet and
Garrison Ball
By Virginia Beaton
Trident staff
Tickets went on sale on
February 1 for the second
annual Fleet and Garrison
Ball.
The ball is scheduled to take
place at the Wardroom of CFB
Halifax on Saturday, May
27, 2006, according to Sub-
Lieutenant (SLt) Ann Mech,
comptroller/budget committee
member for the event.
Tickets went fast for the
first Fleet and Garrison Ball,
held in May 2005, and all in
attendance regarded it as a
highly successful evening,
stated SLt Mech.
“We are looking to sell 600
tickets. We did last year and
we sold out very quickly, within
three weeks.”
This year’s theme is Army,
noted SLt Mech. Plans are
underway to create a décor
that will heighten that theme,
“ so there will be an Army flair
to it.”
The evening begins with
hors d’oeuvres at 6 p.m., preceding
the formal multicourse
dinner, to be followed
by music and dancing. Several
ensembles in different
rooms will provide music in
varried styles for dancing,
ranging from ballroom dance,
to a room offering contemporary
music with a DJ, according
to SLt Mech. “There will
be something for everyone.”
Rooms will be made available
in Juno Tower for any ball
guests who wish to stay
overnight, stated SLt Mech.
“There will be an
Army flair to it.”
The event is open to all
serving Halifax region officers
of the Army, Navy and
Air Force, both Regular and
Reserve. Mess members and
associate members and spouses
are also eligible to attend.
The dress code is Mess Dress
for members and formal attire
for guests.
Fleet and Garrison Ball
tickets are priced at $75 per
person or $150 per couple up
until March 31, and $85 per
person and $170 per couple
after that.
Tickets are available at the
Wardroom or by calling function
coordinator Rick Durand
at 721-8616.
Helo down, helo found
By Lt(N) S. Moody & MS K. Warren
Early in the evening of December 8
a Coast Guard helicopter returning
to Marystown from routine maintenance
on Go-By Point Light was reported
overdue. The helicopter had reported
its departure but failed to arrive in
Marystown. HMC Ships Goose Bay and
Glace Bay were in the area and commenced
a search in Mortier Bay. Late in
the evening they recovered the pilot and
passenger both of whom were dead.
The Transportation Safety Board
(TSB) dispatched a team of investigators
to the area and using Coast Guard
ships and boats from the area, they
started the search for the helicopter.
TSB began the search by interviewing
witnesses and conducting an underwater
search for an underwater beacon that
was installed in the helicopter. The beacon
was not located anywhere inside
the bay or its approaches. They then
searched the shallow areas using small
side scan sonar.
By December 12, the helicopter still
had not been located. The Trinity Route
Survey Office was called for advice.
Some of the TSB investigators involved
in the new search and investigation had
been involved with the Route Survey
Office during the Swiss Air Search and
Recovery and knew of the capabilities
of the small office.
On December 13 the official request
was made for the Route Survey Team
and a small team from the Fleet Diving
Unit.
The Route Survey Team was asked to
bring along its Klein 5500 side scan
sonar with which to search and the
divers were asked to bring their Phantom
Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV)
to identify targets of interest.
Equipment was assembled and loaded
onto a Coast Guard truck on December
14. The two Navy teams departed on
Helicopter being hoisted ashore after recovery.
December 15 and met the truck in
Marystown early on December 16.
The side scan sonar was loaded and
tested and the underwater search began
on December 17.
Ten targets of interest were passed to
the underwater identification team. The
Atlantic Osprey with its two ROVs
arrived that day and immediately started
surveying the seafloor.
Late in the evening on December 17
the helicopter was located on the top
of an underwater pinnacle. A video survey
of the helicopter was completed
that night.
The next morning the decision was
made to recover the helicopter as soon
as possible and the recovery planning
began. The helicopter was lifted clear
of the water that evening by the Atlantic
Osprey and then transferred ashore the
next morning.
The helicopter was then loaded onto
the Coast Guard truck along with the
equipment from the Route Survey
Office and the Diving Unit.
The investigation into the cause of
the crash and why the beacon didn’t
work continue and is not expected to be
completed for a number of months.
The Route Survey Office and the
ROV Team from the Fleet Diving Unit
once again proved that the Navy is
Ready Aye Ready.
