Houseboat floats across the harbour
By Virginia Beaton
There was an unusual sight in Halifax
harbour on January 26 and 27.
A houseboat that had washed ashore
at the Canadian Forces Ammunition
Depot (CFAD) in Bedford earlier that
month began to drift across the harbour.
According to Lieutenant Commander
(LCdr) Scott Tofflemire, Queen’s Harbour
Master, the houseboat had earlier
run aground at CFAD sometime between
January 17 and 18.
At that time, the houseboat had broken
loose from the location where it had
been tied up in Wright’s Cove near Dartmouth,
and floated down the harbour
toward the depot. LCdr Tofflemire stated
“There was no risk to the depot, as it
was washed up onto a remote portion of
the property.”
A company had been informed about
the event, with a view to salvaging
the houseboat, and according to LCdr
Tofflemire, “They were trusted to be
responsible for the house, and based
upon several factors, consulted with
DND officials, they determined the best
course of action and a recovery plan and
date was determined.”
But before that company could take
action, the elements acted on the houseboat
again. LCdr Tofflemire stated,
“Military personnel noticed that the
house that was washed onto the shore at
Canadian Forces Ammunition Depot
Bedford drifted away from the shore as
The houseboat came to rest between Seaview Park and a container terminal.
a result of tides and winds during the
wee hours of January 26.”
It drifted away again, eventually
coming to rest on the Halifax side of
the harbour between Seaview Park and
the Fairview Cove area, near a container
terminal.
DND took actions to alert vessels in
the harbour about the houseboat as it
drifted, LCdr Tofflemire noted.
“We contacted the appropriate folks
at Halifax Traffic and as an extra precaution,
decided to dispatch a port security
vessel to the site in the hopes that
we could warn other harbour traffic that
there was a house floating in the waterways.
We felt that this was a prudent
gesture that would provide extra safety
to other marine traffic.”
News reports indicated that the
houseboat belonged to Larry Cartwright,
a Lunenburg County resident who
had planned to move it to the LaHave
River in the summer of 2006. The
houseboat had been in Wright’s Cove
for several years.
