Environmental Aspects of Phosphate and Potash Mining

Planning, environmental management and rehabilitation
are conducted throughout the mining life cycle,
encompassing all other activities.
By examining each stage of the life cycle, the potential
environmental effects can be identified and actions
taken to mitigate or prevent them. Synergies can be
developed, and opportunities identified, avoiding
additional costs and potentially creating new streams
of revenue, resulting in an improved of the performance
both environmentally and economically.
Companies are beginning to adopt life-cycle thinking.
This is evidenced through the environmental reporting
example presented in Figure 1.4. The diagram is
supported by figures on the input and output flows,
including emissions, wastes and net land disturbance
to provide a measure of environmental performance.
