Family Fun
On this Great Outdoors ‘Getaway’ excursion we visited
many great family fun places, including The Aquarium, Ice-
House, Wonderland Fun Park, The Museum and IMAX. We
enjoyed this experience going around Melbourne and
appreciated the beautiful scenery. In our travels, we came
across a Big M van and we were able to take as many
FREE Big M’s as we could, and that made our day!
This project brought Melbourne to life for the girls and it was wonderful seeing them so exited and productive
with their collection of data… Looking forward to the show!
PS - Each group wrote their own article above.
LOTE NEWS
On Thursday 19 th May, ten students from the Year 11 Japanese class went
to Shoya Japanese restaurant in Market Lane in the city to conclude their
study of “The Eating Habits of the Japanese”. The girls were able to sample
a range of traditional Japanese food such as tofu, a type of savoury custard
called chawanmushi, tempura, sashimi and udon. They were also able to
experience dining at an authentic atmosphere seated at “horigotatsu” type
tables and being served by native speakers of the Japanese language who
were only too happy to explain what ingredients were used or how certain
dishes were prepared. The information gathered by the students on this
excursion was then used the following week when they wrote a review of the
restaurant in Japanese for their Written SAC.
RAGE Book Club
On Friday May 20 th Stephanie Stepan, a former student of the
Academy and now Publicist at Text Publishing, came to speak to
members of the RAGE Book Club about the publishing industry.
She firstly explained how she worked as a volunteer at a
publishing company and then managed to secure a position at
Text. She went on to talk about how authors go about getting their
books published and emphasised the importance of proof reading.
Editors do not accept manuscripts which have grammatical and
spelling errors. Steph also brought along a couple of young adult
books which are to be released later this year.
It was a great pleasure to welcome Steph back to the school and
hear about her life after Academy.
A number of RAGE members went along to the Reading Matters
Conference at the State Library on 26 th May and listened to a
number of authors talk about their books. The most entertaining
by far was Oliver Phommavanh who wrote Thai-riffic, a story about a Thai-Australian boy whose parents own a Thai
restaurant, but who longs for a pizza. He goes to great lengths to hide his Thai background but a school project
teaches him to appreciate his parents and culture. Oliver also wrote a chapter in Growing-up Asian in Australia, an
anthology of stories written by Asian Australians, edited by Alice Pung and which is held in the library.
It was a most entertaining morning and the girls are now looking forward to more of the same when we attend the
Melbourne Writers’ Festival in August.
