PERFORMING ARTS DEPARTMENT Greetings school community, ‘Grease’ The Musical - What a tremendous success! Congratulations and thank you to everybody who contributed to making our College musical a reality. Special thanks must go to Sr. Mary Moloney, our Principal and Mr McFarlane, Principal of Simonds Catholic College for supporting the production. Thank you to the Academy staff who gave up their time during rehearsals, helped backstage with props, sets and ticketing. The guest appearances of Mr De Cata, Ms Doria, Ms Grove and Mr Hyland as Teen Angels was appreciated. Thank you to our behind the Scenes helpers - Mr McInerney, Ms Harding, Ms Hocking, Ms Luscombe, Mr Fern, Mr Gatt, Mr Romanin, Ms Neil, Mr Fuller, Mrs Appleby, Ms Kennedy, Mr Bourne, and Ms Salvo. Past students were also involved - Mille Sedlarevic, Jennifer De Guzman, Rebecca Nutter, Hannah Butler, and Natalie Taylor. Also a huge thank you must go out to all the parents who helped with sewing the costumes especially Mrs Morrissey, Mrs Cavedon and donations from Mrs Allegro, Mr and Mrs Vavalà, Mr Rozakeas, and the Academy Parents’ Association. Thank you, too, Marian College for the use of their props. ‘Grease’ is the Academy’s fourth production, following the success of ‘Wizard of Oz’, ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Leader of the Pack’. This year’s production of Grease was a very historical event because it brought together two schools. The show was put together during hours of holiday rehearsals, and lunchtime and after school rehearsals. We thank Mr Hessey, Producer, Director and, just about everything else, for taking on this huge task. In Mr Hessey’s words “the show wouldn’t have been possible without our student support” Production Team - Alex Vavalá, Hariet Darby - Mr Hessey’s Assistants, Caitlin Farrelly – Costumes. Main Choreographers – Sarah Cardamone, Emily-Rose Guarnuccio. Helpers – Ruby Fleming, Grace Donohoe (also makeup), Isabella Cavedon, Giulietta Busso, Rebecca Bassett vocal coach. Finally to everyone who has helped out along the way, your help has not gone unnoticed and we thank you very much. Musical Report It’s been 3 weeks, 4 days, 3 hours and 7 minutes since the Academy/ Simonds musical “Grease” came to a spectacular end. For 9 months we have worked closely with a talented cast, an amazing production team and the fabulous Mr Hessey and to see this musical come to an end is quite sad. Everyone involved this year had amazing talents but there a few who need special mentions. We had an amazing group of choreographers (Isabella Cavedon, Sarah Cardamone, Emily Guarnuccio & Ruby Fleming) who taught everyone to dance. Rebecca Basset was our vocal coach who whipped everyone’s voices into shape. Our production team consisted of Caitlin Farrrely, Harriet Darby and myself. Caitlin was in charge of the costume department, designing an individual look for each cast member, rewrote the script and did our pre-show warm ups. Harriet was our stage manager and over all organiser. She could fix any problems on stage, find anything that went missing and created all the advertisement. Mr Hessey was our director, producer, go to man, father figure and friend throughout the musical. His dedication to the musical was infallible and without him it would never have come to fruition. And as our great maestro would always say to me, “Alex, please write something about yourself!” So this is what I got to say... I was the official Nonna (Grandmother) of the production. My main job was generally looking out for the cast’s well being. This entitled feeding them all (they eat so much), keeping them calm (I think it was them who kept me calm in the end!), making sure all 100 and something costumes were all ironed ready to go (funnily enough, it became my stress relief), cleaning up after the boys (I swear, I don’t think they know the meaning of the word ‘coat hanger’) and attending to any wardrobe malfunction, scraped knee, emotional breakdown or just for a hug. Anyways, enough about the awesome talents and let’s talk about the show… Opening night was a success. Our night began with a mad flurry of costumes, make up, hair gel and straighteners but as usual we were ready to perform by 7.30pm. The main highlight of the night was putting makeup on the boys as they flat out refused. The cast performed to a sold out crowd and received a standing ovation. As the shows continued the cast consumed countless amounts of cordial and food, probably used more than 4 large cans of hair spray, applied numerous layers of foundation and used the question “Where is my…” a countless number of time. Somewhere in between all the hype we all came to the realisation that this experience was nearly over. By Saturday 28 th the cast had made a deal to go out with a bang and that we did. That Saturday was our best show. Every note was hit, every dance step performed and the acting was deserving of a Tony Award. On behalf of the whole cast we would like to thank Mr Hessey for giving us the opportunity to shine on stage and participate in an event that has left us with memories and friendships that will last a life time. Alex Vavalá 12 Green Wow, what an amazing 9 months full of blood, sweat and tears. It went and came so quickly. The five performances of ‘Grease’ were all a success. Opening Night was fantastic and despite a few technical difficulties and a rowdy audience on the second night but we came through and worked together to keep the show going. illiant and very fun. I like to thank all the girls and boys who performed you were all amazing and did an excellent job to make the show great. The boys at Simonds Catholic College were extraordinary. We thought that with no previous experience from the boys, they wouldn’t make it, but they all surprised us with their hidden dancing, acting and singing skills. They were amazing to watch and work with, so thank you. I’d also like to thank Mr. Hessey for his support, his hard work, commitment and encouragement, because without him this show wouldn’t have happened. So thanks Mr. Hessey. I hope all of you watching had as fun, as we did performing. So thank you to all who helped, and supported us, you are all very much appreciated. I hope the next musical is as successful as this one was. So thank you once again. Sarah Cardamone 12 Blue Instrumental Music Lessons Enrolment for Semester Two Now is the time to organize enrolment for private lessons in Semester Two. Enrolment forms are available in the student office. Please note that all students who are currently having private lessons have to fill out an enrolment form to reenrol for Semester two. All enrolments and re-enrolments are to be done by the end of this term. Please see Mr Hessey or Ms Tran in the student office for any quires in regards to music lessons in Semester Two. School Holliday Band Rehearsal A School Band rehearsal is scheduled during the holidays on Monday 11 July (2 nd week of the holidays). The rehearsal is aimed to prepare the band for the Melbourne Schools Band Festival in August. Students are to be at school at 8-45am and will be dismissed at 3-30pm. Melbourne Schools Band Festival The Melbourne Schools Band Festival is going to be on Thursday 18 August. The girls in the school band are in the process in learning new material for their performance at Robert Blackwood Hall.
