GOOD NEWS! Holiday Highlights In a year with much economic uncertainty, we are pleased to share that many of our Holiday Fundraisers surpassed our goals. In fact, we ran out of holiday cards and cookbooks. And, we sold a record number of holiday animal sponsorships - up 65% from last year! Thanks to all who support our holiday fundraising. It helps us to continue to care for our homeless pets year round. HHS Holiday Fundraisers: • Sponsor an Animal Certificates • 2009 Holiday Appeal • 2009 Holiday Cards • Holiday Giving Tree • Holiday Gift Wrap Borders; Barnes & Noble • Shop-N-Share Programs Vern Goers Greenhouse & Jewel HHS Fundraising Cookbook Box Office Smash! The HHS fundraising cookbook, Bone Appétit, Recipes for Pets & People was one of the biggest hits of 2009. The cookbook features recipes from staff, volunteers, friends, area vet offices, hospitals, and animal related partners. The recipes are wonderful. However, the animal stories steal the show! The cookbook features adoption stories from HHS alumni. The animals share how they came to the shelter and how they found their loving forever homes. The cookbooks sold like hotcakes! It was a wonderful problem to run out and reorder. The good news is we do have cookbooks available and in stock at the shelter. The cookbooks are $15 each or $12 each for 5 or more. For more call 630- PAWS FOR APPLAUSE A big thank you for the generous donations from our local area scouting troops: Tammy Minuti, Troop #223, Karen Janik and Brownie Troop #133, to Girl Scout Troop #733 and to the girls in the Western Springs Brownie Troop #266 for creating a homemade gingerbread house for HHS! Special thanks to those children who celebrated birthdays and made donations to our shelter animals: Kira Matheson, Gabrielle Gilhooley and Jay Anisi. And, kudos to our lemonade stand partners, Ryan & Kyle Kohlsaat. A big thanks goes out to St. John’s Lutheran School, 5th grade Eagles in Action for their service project and to Hinsdale Hospital Blood Center, supply drive. And, to Sally Sinow and the Lace School’s PAWS Club who donated 60 fleece lined cat boxes. To those who organized special projects and donated the proceeds: Thanks to Nicole Barton, Shannon Kelly, Sammie Barton, Bridget Kelly, Holly & Shawna Hanrahan who raised $230 selling scented pencils and donated the proceeds to HHS. Thank you to Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Riverside and the Community Life Committee for organizing a holiday fundraiser for the HHS animals. This is the second year for their Christmas Giving Tree and they successfully raised $500! Sts. Peter and Paul Church Christmas Tree raised $500 for our homeless animals! Special thanks for giving from the heart to help the HHS animals: Dane Schillingburg, Tyler Bernklau, and Grace Reynolds . To Samantha Barton who gave homemade quilted pads for the kitties and to Lauren Bryant –Ridgeway who donated her own money and cat treats and toys. Congratulations and Thank You to Maddy Schierl for creating her original animal drawing that was selected for the cover of the HHS’s Annual Holiday Appeal card. The Pedigree Foundation provides grants and assistance to animal shelters across the county. Kudos to those who collected food and shelter supplies. Rebecca Shanahan care of PBA, Deborah Starzl, Tina Anderson and to the Indian Boundry YMCA after school kids club. And, to Out U Go, Downers Grove. These donations are greatly appreciated and always needed! Thanks to the Hinsdale United Methodist Church, Hinsdale. They organized a giving tree with proceeds to benefit our HHS animals. Directors Desk....continued from page 1 Whenever I tell people I’m with the Hinsdale Humane Society, they often say “Oh, it must be so sad to work there.” While there are sad moments, each day is filled with the satisfaction of knowing the animals are safe and healthy until they find their forever homes. Hinsdale Humane Society Staff Two Paws Up! ...To the Razny Jewelers, Hinsdale who hosted a Shop n Share event in December. Razny’s generously donated 10% of sales generated to HHS. They also displayed and sold copies of our popular fundraising cookbook. Thank you for your friendship and support! It is an honor to stand beside you in service to the cats and dogs. And to our volunteers, board members, adopters and supporters: thank you for all you do to make Hinsdale Humane Society such a great place to be! You know the old saying “If you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life.” Now let’s all go out and taste more soap. HHS received a $5,090 grant from The Grace Bersted Foundation. The grant will allow us to grow our pet therapy programs in DuPage County, which has been a long term goal of the shelter. Currently, our Pet a Pet volunteers visit 21 area nursing homes and the READ teams visit 5 area libraries. So Long, But Not Goodbye The Hinsdale Humane Society would like to publicly thank Jill Schuch for her dedication to our homeless animals for the past ten years. Jill began as a volunteer dog walker and then moved into the role of Volunteer Coordinator. Many of you will remember Fred, her German Shepherd and HHS alumnus who died in 2007, as they both entertained the crowd during volunteer orientations. Over the years, Jill has been our computer expert, webmaster, donor database manager, and Jill Schuch interim executive director. She recently resigned from HHS to relocate to Scottsdale, Arizona. Jill is the proud pet parent of Percy and Annie (READ and Pet a Pet participants) and Belle, all rescued Papillons. Annie is also an HHS alumnus. Outside of HHS, Jill has been an active Jill Schuch participant in rally and obedience training and as a volunteer for both Papillon and German Shepherd breed rescue groups. We thank Jill for her years of service to HHS and we know the shelter has benefitted from her compassion for animals. Jill, we wish you all the best! Kristi Wambaja, Hinsdale Animal Hospital’s Office Manager, picking up animals from HHS in their snappy new transport vehicle. A special thanks to the Hinsdale Animal Hospital, Hinsdale for picking up and transporting HHS animals for spay and neutering. It’s such a help to the shelter to have this service available. And, the animals are now riding in style in the new Hinsdale Animal Hospital van! 3
