The Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Terri<strong>to</strong>ry does not have a Public Advocate<br />
but it does have an Office <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Public Guardian.<br />
The Office <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Public Guardian can apply for<br />
guardianship orders, provide reports <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> court, make<br />
representations <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> court, act as guardian and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
functions conferred <strong>to</strong> it by law. Guardianship Panels<br />
are appointed by <strong>the</strong> Minister <strong>to</strong> provide advice and<br />
make recommendations <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Court in relation <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
issue <strong>of</strong> guardianship orders. Although <strong>the</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Public Guardian and <strong>the</strong> Guardianship Panel both have<br />
investigative powers for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> reporting <strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> court, <strong>the</strong>y only have that power if so ordered<br />
by <strong>the</strong> court.<br />
