SYNOPSIS
Ten-year-old Hannes (NICK ROMEO REIMANN) lives with his single-parent Mom
(NORA TSCHIRNER). His greatest dream is to become a member of the "The
Crocodiles" – the coolest gang in the world. He has to accept a dare to become a
Crocodile. The dare goes wrong, putting Hannes in serious danger. He's saved at the
last minute thanks to Kai (FABIAN HALBIG), who's in a wheelchair. Kai desperately
wants to be a Crocodile, too, but the other kids just make fun of him. For them Kai is a
cripple who's no good in a pinch. He can't even run away. One night, however, Kai
witnesses a burglary. Suddenly, the gang is interested in him after all. But Kai will only
help them solve the crime and collect the reward if he gets to join the gang. With Kai's
help and their typical Crocodile resourcefulness, courage and ingenuity, the Crocodiles
set about cracking the case and taking on the dangerous gang of burglars...
PRESS INFO
First published in Germany in 1977, Max von der Grün's youth novel "Vorstadtkrokodile"
(The Crocodiles) sold over 800 000 copies and influenced an entire generation of
Greman kids. Now the Crocodiles come to the big screen, directed by Christian Ditter
("French for Beginners"). Working from a draft by Martin Ritzenhoff ("If It Don't Fit, Use
a Bigger Hammer"), Christian Ditter also wrote the screenplay, updating the story while
preserving the unique appeal of the original story.
The Crocodiles are embodied by a who's who of German child actors – headlined by
Nick Romeo Reimann ("The Wild Soccer Bunch" Parts 3-5), Fabian Halbig (drummer for
the hit teen band "Killerpilze," giving his acting debut), Leonie Tepe ("Taco und
Kaninchen") and Manuel Steitz ("Herr Bello"). Together they take on a violent gang of
bikers, played by Jacob Matschenz ("The Wave"), Axel Stein ("Killing is my Business,
Honey") and Oktay Özdemir ("Leroy"). The grownups are acted by star Nora Tschirner
(hit romcom "Rabbits Without Ears"), rapper Smudo and vet Maria Schrader ("Aimée
and Jaguar"). Supporting roles include Martin Semmelrogge ("Das Boot") as a minigolf
course owner and Ralf Richter (also "Das Boot") as police officer.
VORSTADTKROKODILE was produced by Westside Filmproduktion and Rat Pack
Filmproduktion, in co-production with Constantin Film Produktion. The creative team
has already worked together on hits like "Bang Boom Bang", "If It Don't Fit, Use a
Bigger Hammer", "Hui Buh, the Goofy Ghost", "French for Beginners " and "The Wave".
With "The Crocodiles", they again manage to deliver exciting, appealing and engaging
entertainment for the whole family.
The production was supported by the film boards of North Rhine-Westfalia, Bavaria, and
the German federal film board.
OLLI (played by Manuel Steitz)
MEET THE CROCODILES
"We meet here tomorrow. See you later, Alligator.”
Olli is the Head Crocodile. He gives the orders and likes it that way. But it's lonely at the
top, as he learns. He and his sister Maria love to fight, but they also love each other
dearly and always get each other's backs when the chips are down.
MARIA (played by Leonie Tepe)
"That dare is so stupid, Olli! Almost as stupid as you are!"
Maria is the only girl in the gang. Being Olli's big sister, she didn't have to pass the dare,
a fact the other Crocodiles like to rub in her face. She's something like the voice of
reason within the group, talking sense into her brother when he's in danger of doing
something stupid.
HANNES (played by Nick Romeo Reimann)
"Too small? Come on, Mom, we're a team, remember? You get your degree and I'll hold
down the fort for you!"
Hannes, really wants to be a Crocodile, even if he's a little too young. Hannes and his
Mom don't have a lot of money, so he helps out around the house wherever he can.
He's the Man of the House for his young, single Mom, who's has to work and study for
her degree at the same time. Hannes isn't always the bravest, but he can be when he
has to.
KAI (played by Fabian Halbig)
"Mom, I don't want to go to special education! It's for retards!"
Ever since he had an accident with his Dad, Kai has been quadriplegic. Even though
he's basically a happy, lively kid, being in a wheelchair takes its toll–a fact he would
never ever admit, especially not in front of his fellow Crocodiles. He's a loner
sometimes, and can spend hours staring through his telescope. But his friendship with
Hannes and the other Crocodiles shows him how priceless it is to have good friends.
4

FRANK (played David Hürten)
"No way can the retard join!"
Frank has a big mouth and is totally against letting Kai join the Crocodiles. But he's
really just insecure because things at home aren't all that great in his family: Frank's
dad tends to lose his temper and slap the kids around, especially Frank's good-fornothing
older brother, Dennis. And Dennis, who used to be buddies with his little
brother, has turned into a real bully who makes Frank do all the housework.
ELVIS (played Nicolas Schinseck)
"What just happened?"
Elvis got his nickname because he wants to be a Rock God. He's introverted and
doesn't really talk a lot. He always has his headphones on, listening to his iPod, so it's
sometimes hard to tell what's going on inside him. When he does speak, he usually
astonishes the other kids with his incredible command of rock 'n' roll trivia.
PETER (played by Robin Walter)
"W…w…we're all going to j…j…jail for this."
Peter is the chicken of the bunch. His timid nature and his tendency to stutter make him
a bit of an outsider in the gang. But no one ever had a truer friend, and the gang
wouldn't be the same without him.
JORGO (played by Javidan Imani)
"Dude, 1000 Euros reward – You can buy a house on Crete with that much money, with
a yard, a beach and a flatscreen TV."
Jorgo's family is from Greece. He loves his cell phone (even if the battery or the
reception tend to cause problems) and is never at a loss for a corny joke. But whenever
he starts to lay it on a little too heavy with the machismo, Maria is sure to shut him up
quickly.
STORY
No doubt about it: The Crocodiles are the coolest gang of kids in town. To make sure it
stays that way, Chief Crocodile Olli (MANUEL STEITZ) makes every new member pass
a dare. Every Crocodile–except Olli's big sister Maria (LEONIE TEPE), the gang's only
girl–had to climb the roof of the deserted old brick factory: Frank, the big loudmouth
(DAVID HÜRTEN), aspiring hipster Elvis (NICOLAS SCHINSECK), Jorgo the Greek
(JAVIDAN IMANI), even scaredy-cat Peter (ROBIN WALTER). And Hannes (NICK
ROMEO REIMANN) urgently wants to be a Crocodile, too: He climbs a rusty fireescape
ladder up to the roof of the brick works – finding the hidden Crocodile insignia
which makes him a ful-fledged member of the gang. But on his way down, the ladder
gives way, Hannes winds up clinging to the roof. Miraculously, the fire department
shows up just in time to save Hannes from the worst.
But who called 911? The fire fighters tell Hannes the name and address of his rescuer,
and he goes to thank him: It's Kai (FABIAN HALBIG), who had an accident that left him
quadriplegic, in a wheelchair. He saw Hannes dangling from the roof through his
telescope and called for help. Hannes at first feels awkward calling on Kai to thank him,
but soon takes a liking to the handicapped kid. Hannes suggests making Kai a
Crocodile, but the rest of the gang is against it. Especially Olli and Frank don't want a
"retard" in the gang, who can't even run away in a pinch.
One night, the kiosk run by Hannes' Mom (NORA TSCHIRNER) gets broken into and
robbed bare. It's a serious setback for Hannes and his Mom, who's a single mom
putting herself through mail-order college on the side. She doesn't have the time or the
money to fix the shop up again. On the condition he can join the Crocodiles, Kai tells
Hannes that not only did he witness the burglarly, he even knows where the crooks
have their hideout: In the old brick works!
Now, the Crocodiles are on a mission: They have to solve the case of the burglary, to
collect the reward so they can help Hannes and his Mom. Kai is allowed to tag along,
and together the kids manage to discover the hideout where the loot is hidden.
Unfortunately all the evidence points to Frank's big brother Dennis (JACOB
MATSCHENZ) being one of the burglars. When Hannes voices what everyone suspects
and threatens to tell the police, the Crocodiles turn against him: They want to protect
Dennis–after all, he's Frank's brother. Even Kai turns away from Hannes, not wanting to
lose his new-found friends. But when Dennis and his accomplices Kevin (AXEL STEIN)
and Achmed (OKTAY ÖZDEMIR) jump Kai on the way home and injure him, the
Crocodiles have had enough and decide to tell the cops.
For the sergeant on duty, however (RALF RICHTER), it's an open and shut case.
Dennis and his buddies have fingered a group of poor Albanian kids from the
neighborhood for the crime–for which they even want to collect the reward! The last
thing the desk cop needs is a bunch of smart-ass kids causing him extra paperwork.
6

What's a gang to do? The Crocodiles decide it's up to them to bust Dennis and his gang
all by themselves. The brickyard is scheduled for demolition, so the burglars will have to
find a new hiding place for all their loot. The kids hatch a plan to catch them red-handed
transporting their stolen goods–but the bad guys catch the Crocodiles instead, leading
to a showdown that the Crocodiles can only win if they all stick together–plus a little
help from Kai doing his best William Tell routine...!
Dennis and his accomplices go to jail. The reward goes to the Crocodiles after all, but
now Hannes and his Mom don't need it anymore, seeing as they have their inventory
back again. So the Crocodiles surprise Kai with the best present ever: A handicappedequipped
handbike–with a Crocodile trailer! Now he's officially part of the gang.
Together they cheer the demolition of the old brickyard…
INTERVIEW WITH CHRISTIAN BECKER (Producer)
How did this movie come about?
Making a movie out of the novel "Vorstadtkrokodile" had been in the back of my head
for a long time, since I'd loved the book and the TV movie by German public
broadcasting since I was a boy. So when I heard from the publisher that the movie
rights were available, I was immediately interested. I couldn't believe the rights weren't
taken, and would have kicked myself, if someone had beaten us to it. So in March of
2005 we started brainstorming, and quickly reached a deal with the publisher for the
movie rights to the book.
Lena Olbrich and I started developing the screenplay together with Martin Ritzenhoff,
whom we had worked with on "Hunt for the Ancient Relic" and "If It Don't Fit, Use a
Bigger Hammer". After our terrific experiences with Christian Ditter as director of
"French for Beginners", we asked him to direct, and he took that screenplay and made it
his own.
Why were you such a fan of the book?
Well, I'm from Krefeld, near Duisburg, on the edge of the Ruhr coal and steel region–so
I basically grew up with the book and the TV movie, which take place in Duisburg. The
"The Crocodiles" always had a special appeal for me–precisely because they are all just
regular kids. No one gets driven around in a Rolls Royce like in the "Three
Investigators", there are now twelve-year olds riding motocross bikes like in "Wild
Soccer Bunch" or solving their cases with the help of supercomputers. I don't want to
put anyone down, it's just that we wanted to show everyday kids in everyday situations.
The message is, get together with your friends and you can have your own adventures,
just look around you!
So you wanted your characters to be as realistic as possible?
That's right: They're the kind of friends everybody would like to have. We'd all like to
have been in a gang like that–if we had had the courage and if something like that
happened to us. The Crocodiles don't have a supercomputer to solve all their problems
at the push of a button, they have the same kinds of problems that regular kids have all
over the place. That's why every other kid can identify with them. At the same time, I
very much wanted to maintain the special, local Ruhr Valley charm of the novel by Max
von der Grün: We wanted to present a stylized, romanticized version of the coal mining
district in the film.
Christian Becker Interview Continued:
How hard was it to find your cast of young actors?
Together with Christian Ditter and Lena Olbrich, our Casting Director Daniela Tolkien
put a lot of effort into casting the Crocodiles, to make sure they would truly be a team at
the beginning of the shoot. Some of the roles were filled by kids with a lot of experience,
while others were completely new to acting and filmmaking–so what you see here is
their screen debut.
Does that mean the grown-ups were easier to cast?
Let's put it this way: We had a certain dream cast in mind–and we got them all! We had
a back avenue to some of them, such as in the case of Nora Tschirner, who became an
overnight sensation with "Rabbits Without Ears". We were shooting the screwball
comedy "Killing is My Business, Honey" with her, and were very lucky to be able to
keep her on for our next project. Of course, old friends like Ralf Richter or Martin
Semmelrogge, both veterans of the famous "Das Boot", are also on board. And as far
as Germany's most famous rapper Smudo goes, we're all big fans, of course, plus
Christian Ditter shot a commercial with him once, so they already knew each other.
Being from Stuttgart, Smudo isn't exactly a native to the Ruhr, but it's an area that has
always attracted a lot of people from all over, and is still a real melting pot.
Who is the target audience for the CROCODILES?
There are several, actually: We tried to keep our appeal as broad as possible. Primarily,
of course, it's a film for kids and teens who enjoy adventure and love going to see a
great movie–at the same time, we want to appeal to the adults who grew up with the
Crocodiles. In order to live up to the expectations of that audience, we threw in a whole
bunch of references to the original 1970s TV movie: For instance, having Martin
Semmelrogge play the oily minigolf guy. Long before he became world famous with
"Das Boot", young Martin played one of his first roles in the TV adaptation, and the
minigolf guy was played by his father, Willy Semmelrogge! During that scene, you can
even hear the original title track "Amada mia, amore mio", which we want to cover on
the End Credit Vocal as well. And finally, the Crocodile emblem appears in several
versions, once as a dog-tag like pendant on a chain, but then also as a patch on Maria's
jeans, in homage to the original Crocodiles...
9

INTERVIEW WITH LENA OLBRICH (Creative-Producer)
How does the original novel by Max von der Grün relate to the movie "The Crocodiles"?
We always wanted to update the story into the modern day, in order to make it
accessible to a new generation. So we knew we had to find a fresh approach to the
material. But at the same time we are very much devoted to the original and definitely
wanted to maintain the crucial elements and values of the original, such as tolerance
and friendship. So we were very happy that the original copyright holders liked our
script. Max von der Grün's widow even came to visit the set
The cast holds some great surprises and discoveries, including Fabian Halbig, drummer
of the hit teen band "Killerpilze". How did that come about?
The story with Fabian went like this: We saw the "Killerpilze" (Killer Shrooms) on TV and
in the teen press and liked their music right off. Fabi impressed us especially due to his
fresh energy, sense of fun and positive vibes. So we got in touch with him without really
expecting anything to come of it, but his management was immediately into the idea,
and then it went very quickly. Fabi was an absolute stroke of luck. An intensely bright
young man who's immensely likeable, has enormous social skills, and really delved into
the role, preparing with intensive acting training and several weeks of wheelchair
training.
How about casting the adult roles, such as Dennis’ gang?
Well, Jakob Matschenz was a standout presence in our Sundance selection "The
Wave", and Oktay Özdemir struck us in the hard-hitting street dramas "Wut" and
"Knallhart". Axel Stein has been a mainstay of German comedy for a long time,
including in our spoof "ProSieben Fairy Tale Hour". In the scant screen time they have,
all three of them manage to give their characters an unmistakable depth and presence.
Of course they're playing the bad guys, the big scary bullies, but all three found ways of
breaking with cliché and adding color, such as the scenes showing Jakob (as Dennis) in
his conflicts with his father.
10

Lena Olbrich Interview Continued:
How did you recruit German veteran stars like Maria Schrader, Ralf Richter and Martin
Semmelrogge?
Ralf Richter has been a part of the Rat Pack stable for a long time, as a real Ruhr coal
district character; so he was a natural pick. As far as Maria Schrader goes, we just think
she's a wonderful, many-faceted actress who would be terrific as Kai's mother. We just
asked her, she met with director Christan Ditter–and they hit it off! And as a veteran of
the original "Crocodile" gang, Martin Semmelrogge was on board from the very start.
Semmelrogge isn't the only reference to the 1977 TV version...
Well, it was a connection we were deliberately trying to make. For example, we held a
meet & greet with eight of the original actors and our cast. That came about thanks to
Heiner Beeker, one of the original Crocodiles. Over all those years, he managed to stay
in touch with all the "alumni" and organize reunions. He's also responsible for an exhibit
in the Brüggen city museum, dedicated to the making of the first film. Naturally he was a
treasure trove of anecdotes and stories about the original shoot. It's almost enough to
make you nostalgic, seeing how easy it was to shoot a movie back then.
For example, we had to build an entire set for the roof in the opening "Dare" sequence,
since we can't film our child actors 40 feet in the air. But back then, they did! They just
put the camera on a fire engine ladder and shot on a roof…!
11

INTERVIEW WITH CHRISTIAN DITTER (Director/Screenwriter)
What was your approach to the CROCODILES?
When I make a movie, it's important to me to tell a story, to make a film that will
entertain, excite and grab the audience, but also give you something to think about on
the way home, in bed at night, or even the day after, and to talk about. In that light, the
story of the Crocodiles was ideal, of course, since it combines great excitement and
adventure with a very broad spectrum of topics to think about.
Where did you first encounter the novel?
It was assigned reading in school, and I loved it. As a kid, I mainly just loved the
mystery story, I think. I mostly registered the other aspects subconsciously–the ethical
dimension, the moral orientation it provides. It wasn't later until I tuned into those parts
of it.
Quite a feat for Max von der Grün as a writer, sneaking in serious topics almost
imperceptibly within a crime story...
Right. And that remained high priority for me, not to preach and moralize. Watching
THE CROCODILES is supposed to be fun and enjoyable. At the same time, it's a great
opportunity for me as a filmmaker to kill two birds with one stone and give young
viewers something to think about, as well.
What was your philosophy in adapting the novel for the screen?
Well, the first thing was to step back and ask myself: What are the themes of the story?
And then, how do those themes relate to the way kids live today? The original story's
topics all tie in to the overarching theme of "integration" and the same is true for the
film. Each character has its own story of integration: Kai in his wheelchair, Hannes as
the runt, Jorgo as a foreigner, Maria as the only girl, Olli, who's always a little alone at
the top as the gang leader, Peter, who stutters and is a little older than the rest, and
finally, introverted and borderline autistic Elvis. I thought that was really interesting, that
the Crocodiles are individually a bunch of rejects and outsiders, but put 'em together
and they're the coolest gang of kids in town!
12

Christian Ditter Interview Continued:
Did you have certain filmic inspirations in mind? For instance, is the opening sequence,
before the main titles, when Hannes has to pass his dare, an homage to the legendary
pre-title sequences of James Bond movies?
I guess you can see it that way! Since the rooftop sequence is fairly isolated from the
rest of the plot, as it was in the novel to begin with, the comparison springs to mind, I
suppose. Besides, that sequence is an ideal way to introduce our hero. It was very
important to me to find the right balance between action scenes, where we really put the
pedal to the metal and have you clutching the edge of your seat, and other, more
thoughtful moments, where we can get closer to our characters and partake of their
feelings.
How much research did you have to do to make the youth slang authentic?
On my publicity tour for "French for Beginners", I had a lot of contact with teens of just
the right age, so I was able to pick up how they talk nowadays. What I noticed most of
all is that they don't stand for bullshit. They're ruthlessly honest and say what they
mean. Even if they wind up regretting it a few minutes later. The next step was to take
the script to a school. As part of German lessons, I went through it with a fourth grade
and a sixth grade, and then we had a double lesson to talk it over. I got a lot of
feedback there, as to how you would say something or what you definitely wouldn't ever
say. The final step was to tell our cast, who are the right age, of course: "If you stumble
over anything in the script that sounds funny: Tell me about it!"
Was it important for the child actors to have acting exprience?
No, we were totally open for anything. There were no prerequisites, neither school plays
nor having been in five movies already. The only thing that mattered is, how much talent
does a kid have? They mainly needed to be strong, undique and striking individuals to
provide additional facets for the gang. With Nick Romeo Reimann in the lead, we were
very lucky, of course. He's an incredible talent–and brings along some serious
moviemaking experience thanks to the "Wild Soccer Bunch" series, as well. But the
other Crocodiles each added their very own flavor to the film, which set them apart from
hundreds of other candidates and made them unique.
13

Christian Ditter Interview Continued:
Your other lead–Fabian Halbig as Kai–had never acted before, but just for that is a real
star in his own right as drummer of teen band "Killerpilze". Does that count as acting
experience?
Definitely! Fabi is such a natural, relaxed kid, who has been accustomed to being in the
limelight from a young age, and so is neither bashful nor trying to be really cool when
the camera is on him. Being that natural is something other actors have to struggle to
learn and Fabi just had it. That was what amazed me from the very start. Of course I
knew Fabi had never acted before, and that playing Kai was a particularly challenging
role, which had to be cast very carefully. But during auditions, he was the first and only
one where I thought, that's it! This kid's got it. All the other candidates quickly drifted
into a kind of heaviness, a melancholy. But I didn't want Kai to be constantly depressed
over his handicap. I wanted him to be a regular kid who happens to have a tragic
disability, but besides that he's got the same worries as all the other kids.
Did the young cast have a chance to get to know each other before the shoot?
Just like on "French for Beginners", we did a weekend of rehearsals, where we didn't do
specific scenes, but rather did acting exercises, barbequed together, read the script
together and played soccer. That kind of getting acquainted is crucial so that everybody
understands, this is going to be my family for the rest of the summer. They have to be a
group before shooting starts, so that you can feel they belong together, they've know
each other forever, from the very first scenes that are shot.
Was it hard to find the main location, the old brickyard?
You bet! We had up to five Location Scouts working at times. If they weren't torn down
already, all those great old industrial buildings have either been converted into ad
agency lofts or trendy eateries. What's more, we needed a defunct industrial builiding
that looks dangerous without actually being dangerous. As if that wasn't impossible
enough, then I always came along insisting that it look great, too. Our set designer Eva
Stiebler finally found a building which actually was a brickyard once, right on the edge of
the Ruhr district–oddly enough, right near where the original TV movie was shot. We
drove out there with an architect and a structural engineer, and found some parts of it
had to be braced or rebuilt–of course without anyone being able to see it's been fixed
THE SCORE by Heiko Maile
THE MUSIC
Heiko Maile is a musician, composer and founding member of Camouflage –
internationally known from hits like "Love Is A Shield" and "The Great Commandment" –
with whom he has released seven albums and numerous singles over the band's 25year
history.
Heiko freelances as a producer, composer and keyboarder in Stuttgart, Berlin and as
part of the Frankfurt composers' collective "Gutleut.tv".
His musical forte is composing and creating electronic music. Working closely with the
director, he crafted a film score for THE CROCODILES heavily influenced by
contemporary youth trends.
THE THEME SONG:
Apollo 3 - "Superhelden" (Sony Music)
"I believe in you, just like you believe in me!" raps Marvin, 12-year-old MC of aPOLLO
3. Driven by Dario's energetic guitar riffs, Henry makes it clear in the refrain: "You can
be, you can be a superhero!" And that's not only what the theme song is about, but the
whole movie as well: Courage and friendship, and how together they can make you a
superhero.
Just like the NASA missions they get their name from, aPOLLO 3 consists of three
crew members. Henry, the thoughtful singer, has a voiuce full of depth and emotion. MC
Marvin adds the requisite coolness and street cred to their tracks with his stylish raps.
And with his jagged-edge, massive guitar riffs, Dario supplies the adrenaline-heavy rock
backing.
The three 12-year-olds have been on their mission since 2006, when they met in school
and began locking themselves into Henry's basement to make music. More or less by
accident, their teacher found out about their band and introduced them to a music
producer she knew: Niko visited the kids at school, sat down at the drum kit with them
and started jamming with them – and was totally exhilarated by his find. Niko and the
kids worked on their tracks for a year until playing "Superheroes" for the filmmakers,
who were so excited they immediately turned it into the title track of the film.
After the film release on March 26 th , 2009, the single hit the stores April 3 rd and has
been in the German Top 100 ever since, putting the kids one step closer to their idols
like Linkin Park and Green Day, and their goal of being the world's youngest rock band.
aPOLLO 3 are three kids on a mission.
