Abbé <strong>Saint</strong>-<strong>Pierre</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> “Quantifying Spirit” 26<br />

this <strong>of</strong> all possible motions became less important than <strong>the</strong> project <strong>of</strong> finding <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matical<br />

relations that could account for <strong>the</strong> phenomena with <strong>the</strong> greatest possible precision. In this way,<br />

French analytical mechanics pioneered a highly ma<strong>the</strong>matized approach to physical science that<br />

ma<strong>de</strong> quantitative prediction a basis for scientific explanation.<br />

For <strong>Saint</strong>-<strong>Pierre</strong> <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs like him, this success <strong>of</strong>fered a powerful mo<strong>de</strong>l to<br />

contemplate. Did o<strong>the</strong>r phenomena, such as those that pertained to social <strong>and</strong> political life, admit<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same quantitative regularities And if so, could one conceive <strong>of</strong> a political science that<br />

would embrace <strong>the</strong> same ma<strong>the</strong>matized approach to empirical investigation that Varignon <strong>and</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs had shown to be powerful in <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> analytical mechanics Petty laid <strong>the</strong><br />

foundation for such a science by showing that “number” could serve as a representation for<br />

political <strong>and</strong> social phenomena. But he did not show how <strong>the</strong> relations between <strong>the</strong>se numbers<br />

could be used to construct a predictive calculus <strong>of</strong> economic <strong>and</strong> political phenomena<br />

comparable to analytical Newtonian mechanics. Equipped with an appreciation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> methods <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> latter, <strong>Saint</strong>-<strong>Pierre</strong> stepped into this breach <strong>de</strong>veloping a political science which attempted to<br />

actualize <strong>the</strong>se quantitative agendas.<br />

<strong>Saint</strong>-<strong>Pierre</strong> <strong>of</strong> course did not have <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matical training to become a true innovator<br />

in this area. Instead it was o<strong>the</strong>r ma<strong>the</strong>maticians closer to <strong>the</strong> new analytical ma<strong>the</strong>matics itself—<br />

figures like Jean <strong>and</strong> Daniel Bernoulli or <strong>Pierre</strong> De Moivre—that <strong>de</strong>veloped <strong>the</strong> quantitative<br />

tools in probability <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>and</strong> statistical analysis that ma<strong>de</strong> <strong>Saint</strong>-<strong>Pierre</strong>’s political science<br />

possible. 55 <strong>Pierre</strong> Rémond <strong>de</strong> Montmor, ano<strong>the</strong>r Malebranche circle member <strong>and</strong> a royal<br />

aca<strong>de</strong>mician with close ties to Fontenelle, <strong>Saint</strong>-<strong>Pierre</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir circle, was at <strong>the</strong> center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

ma<strong>the</strong>matical efforts. 56 His 1708 Essay d’analyse sur les jeux <strong>de</strong> hazard was, as its title suggests,<br />

a work in <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> probability rooted primarily in games <strong>of</strong> chance. But in conception <strong>and</strong>
