<strong>Marcus</strong> <strong>Hutter</strong> - 6 - Universal Induction & Intelligence<br />
Philosophical Issues: Abstract<br />
I start by consider<strong>in</strong>g the philosophical problems concern<strong>in</strong>g artificial<br />
<strong>in</strong>telligence and mach<strong>in</strong>e learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> general and <strong>in</strong>duction <strong>in</strong> particular.<br />
I illustrate the problems and their <strong>in</strong>tuitive solution on various (classical)<br />
<strong>in</strong>duction examples. The common pr<strong>in</strong>ciple to their solution is Occam’s<br />
simplicity pr<strong>in</strong>ciple. Based on Occam’s and Epicurus’ pr<strong>in</strong>ciple, Bayesian<br />
probability theory, and Tur<strong>in</strong>g’s universal mach<strong>in</strong>e, Solomon<strong>of</strong>f<br />
developed a formal theory <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>duction. I describe the sequential/onl<strong>in</strong>e<br />
setup considered <strong>in</strong> this lecture series and place it <strong>in</strong>to the wider<br />
mach<strong>in</strong>e learn<strong>in</strong>g context.
