Mrs. Jung Interview
Mrs. Jung is Hagen’s current Spanish
teacher. She was born in Mexico and
moved to North America about 5 years
ago. She settled in Dickinson due to professional
and family reasons.
Mrs. Jung lives with one daughter, a husband,
and a pet spider named Bonbon,
meaning “marshmallow” in Spanish. Her
favorite foods would be Chinese, but
adores all American food, such as a certain
chocolate Bundt cake.
As a student, her favorite class was philosophy,
the study of theories and knowledge
that comes handy in life. Before becoming
a Spanish teacher, she worked as a
lawyer in Mexico, but always felt that she
loved teaching others and decided to turn
teaching into her career.
Mrs. Jung finds it very important to take
interest in another language. She says it
truly enhances the mind and makes you
think about more than just your culture.
She herself is bilingual, or fluent in more
than one language, and can work as an
interpreter.
If you aren’t taking Spanish class this year
and would like to learn the language yourself,
you can! Mrs. Jung says that the best
way to do this is to learn the words of certain
American words, such as cookies, and
translate it into the Spanish language.
Jung states that her favorite moments in
class are when someone says one thing
meaning another. Some words in the
Spanish language are spelled almost the
same, but by adding con accentos (accents)
the meanings are different.
Mrs. Dennis
Mrs. Dennis is one of our new teachers this
year. She teaches seventh grade math and is in
charge of the science club. Maybe you can
learn something about her.
Q: Why did you decide to teach seventh grade
A: I was excited for a new challenge and energetic
students.
Q: Why do you love science and math
A: I love science and math because they help
me make sense of the world. There’s a beauty
in science and math of the natural world
around us.
Q: What’s your favorite color
A: Rainbow
Q:What is your favorite food
A: Steak
Q: Who do you admire most and why
A: Stephen Hawking because despite all odds
against him, he has made a name for himself.
He didn’t let his disability prevent him from
being great.
Q: What is your favorite song
A: “Stairway to Heaven”
Q: If you won the lottery, what would you do
with the money
A: Invest it. If I invest it, I get more money to
spend on cool stuff. If I spend it, I don’t get as
much.
Q: What is your favorite candy
A: Reese’s peanut butter cups.
Mrs. Friestad- Our Guidance Counselor
A note before we start, this took almost
three weeks to organize and was brief,
but in spite of that, the interview went
well. So I hope you enjoy reading this as
much as I have enjoyed writing this.
Mrs. Friestad is from Rugby, North
Dakota which is located in the upper-right
hand side of North Dakota with a population
of 2,939. It’s a small town, as most
towns in North Dakota are, but it didn’t get
very good reviews on its Dairy Queen. She
also ran seven half marathons and one full
marathon and she likes to hike, ride bike,
and camp.
Mrs. Friestad originally wanted to be
a teacher, but realized she wanted to help
more. She became a counselor so that
brought her to Hagen Junior High.
She thinks the students have good
character and care for each other and the
staff is amazing. She added that all around
this interview and Hagen is great and I
agree.
Thank you for reading my short interview
and good luck for the rest of the
school year.
Be Bully Free!
Nobody likes to be picked on. Bullying can cause two serious problems for the target: mental and physical.
Sometimes, if it is too serious, it can even lead to death.
What is bullying Bullying is using strength or influence to intimidate a person, usually to make the person
feel weak and undesirable or to make the bully feel powerful.
There are many kinds of bullying. When hearing the word ‘bullying’ you usually think of physical harm
done to a person. With growing technology, bullying can now be done via internet, such as Facebook or Twitter, and
through emails or texting. This is also very serious, and can cause more harm to a person than any other bullying,
mentally instead of physically. This is also one of the scariest kinds of bullying, as often times you don’t even know
who the bully is.
Most people would think that bullying is no big deal. But it is! There have even been numerous deaths due
to bullying. Also, people who are bullied are more likely to turn to harmful substances, such as alcohol. Kids that
are bullied can also experience a negative attitude toward school, may become depressed and lonely, and will lose
interest in activities that they once had enjoyed. But bullying isn’t only harmful to the target. Bystanders, or people
who witness bullying, are more likely to have an increased usage in alcohol and tobacco, miss or skip school, and
have increased mental and health problems.
Many people who have been bullied or have witnessed bullying may pass it by as teasing. How do you know
the difference Teasing is different because the person is easily able to reply and is usually not continuous. But continuous
negative behavior is more than likely a form of bullying.
What can you do to stop bullying Speak up! Let the bully know that his or her behavior isn’t OK! And if
the bullying continuous, tell a trusted adult! And most importantly, don’t be a bully yourself. To help spread awareness,
many schools even have a Zero-Tolerance Policy which makes it wrong to bully and will result in consequences.
Nobody has the right to bully someone else! And hopefully we can continue to make not only our school, but our
community a safe and fun environment to live in.
Bullying By Presley Weiler
A lot of bullying has
been going on at
Hagen; outside, in the
halls, even out of
school. Please agree
with me that it needs
to stop.
Here are a few ways
to deal with bullying:
Tell an adult, the bullying
could get worse,
and adults can help to
stop it.
Tell the bully to
STOP in a firm voice,
most likely the bully
will stop.
Ignore the bully if
I asked some students in my
home base what they saw a
lot around Hagen.
Bullying: A lot of them said
they saw bullying in the halls.
If you see bullying, you
should tell an adult or stand
up for the victim. (Boys/Girls)
Swearing: Swearing is not
necessary. It does not make
you cooler, and it can offend
others. Please try to break
this habit. (Boys/Girls)
Book Dropping: Book dropping
is a form of bullying, and
it is very rude and causes a
commotion in the hallways. It
makes students late to class.
Please stop book dropping;
many students don't like it.
(Boys/Girls)
Locker Slamming: Locker
slamming is also bullying.
This, along with book dropping,
causes the victim to be
nerves, they will
probably go away.
Stay with a group or
more than one friend.
This way, you have
buddies to stick up for
you.
Stand up to the bully,
tell them what they are
doing is not funny or
cool and that it is hurt-
Try to avoid contact
try to stay away
BUSINESS NAME
Good Things
Thanksgiving:
Thanksgiving was first celebrated in the
year 1621, near Plymouth, Massachusetts. It
is known as a time of thanks and plenty and
is a traditional holiday for America.
In the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated
on the fourth Thursday in November.
But did you realize that other countries also
celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday These
include Argentina, Canada, Brazil, Japan,
and Switzerland!
One of the most common traditions of
Thanksgiving is right in the name, giving
thanks. Ways to give thanks are found in
poems, stories and bible verses, such as the
poem, I Thank Thee written by Jane Crewdson
in 1860.
Of course, when most people think of
Thanksgiving, they think of the mouthwatering
food. The centerpiece for the
American feast is usually a large roasted
turkey, giving Thanksgiving the nick-name
of “Turkey Day.” A tradition involving the
turkey is the “wishbone” with which you
make a wish. The person who gets their
wishbone in their piece of turkey chooses a
friend or family member to join them in
making a wish. They each grab one end of
the bone and pull. The tradition says that
whoever gets the larger end of the bone will
be awarded with their
wish. By Skylar
“Someone Like You”
A novel by Sarah Dessen
Halley and Scarlett have always been
inseparable. Their friendship was perfect:
Scarlett was the more out-going one, always
knowing just what to do, and Halley was just
along for the ride. But the summer before
their junior year in high school everything
changes for the worst. Scarlett’s boyfriend,
Michael, is killed in a motorcycle accident,
leaving Scarlett heart-broken. To make matters
worse, she finds out that she is pregnant,
carrying the baby of the father who left so
drastically. Now, despite it all, Halley knows
that she must be strong for Scarlett.
“Someone Like You” is a dramatic,
heart-felt novel about events that could happen
to any teenager. I would definitely rate it
at least a 4.5 of 5, as it was very dramatic and
followed the theme well, but was a bit slow at
times.
Veteran’s Day
Every year the United States celebrates Veteran’s
Day on November 11 th to honor the men and
women that defended our nation in battle.
The Veterans Day National Ceremony is
celebrated on Veteran’s Day at the Arlington National
Cemetery. The ceremony commences at precisely
10:00 a.m. with a wreath laying at the Tomb
of the Unknowns and continues inside the Memorial
Amphitheatre with a parade of colors to honor veterans.
The ceremony is intended to honor and thank
everyone who served in the United States Armed
Forces.
Other cemeteries around the United States
also celebrate Veteran’s Day by holding ceremonies
and flag raisings.
Cross Country 2012
By Christopher Dean
The cross country team definitely had a fun, exciting, and successful season this year. There were 23 runners out for the team this season:
10 boys and 13 girls. Many fun experiences were shared such as the bike trip to Fertility Hill, bridge jumping at the Dickinson meet,
swimming in the freezing waters at Patterson Lake, and the bus trips to the meet destinations. Also, Waffle Cone Wednesdays and
“Tough” Tuesdays proved to be memorable days for all the cross country runners. Everyone improved greatly throughout the season
making for successful meet placements. The results are shown in the table below. Two valuable team members, Elizabeth Yoder and
Milla George, even progressed all the way to the varsity level. This would not have been possible, however, without Coach Hoffmann’s
positive and motivational attitude towards all the cross country runners. We can all owe it to him for the great cross country season
shared by all.
