2005 UMKC Volleyball The University: History and Future The History of UMKC Although talk of a university in Kansas City began as early as the 1890s, it was not until the 1920s that talk turned to action. In the postwar decade, a board of trustees comprising leading businessmen, was established, and in 1929 the charter for the University of Kansas City was granted. The dream became a reality when William Volker, a local philanthropist for whom the 93-acre Volker Campus is named, presented the board with the 40-acre nucleus of the present campus site in Kansas City’s Rockhill district. The University of Kansas City, a private, independent university, began its first classes on Oct. 2, 1933, with 264 students enrolled. In the eventful decades following that day, the University developed rapidly, in part due to its affiliation with several area professional schools. This included the Kansas City School of Law in 1938, the Kansas City- Western Dental College in 1941, the Kansas City College of Pharmacy in 1943 and the Conservatory |of Music in 1959. Also established were the School of Administration (1953), the School of Education (1954), the Division for Continuing Education (1958), the School of Graduate Studies (1964), the School of Medicine (1970) and the School of Nursing (1980). On July 25, 1963, the University of Kansas City became the fourth institution in the University of Missouri System. The University’s name was changed to University of Missouri-Kansas City. UMKC’s Emerging Future Since 2000, UMKC has been shifting its culture fundamentally for the purpose of delivering its core educational mission. The University has engaged in a transformation process to produce a culture thatcan support and propel its mission through deliberate actions that are grounded in its vision and values. UMKC continues to take important steps to create an environment that supports quantum results of remarkable, unexpected and unpredictable levels of accomplishment. In just a few years, the University is already beginning to see these results. In fall of 2004 UMKC will open the doors to a state-ofthe-art housing facility that will not only double the availability of on-campus residence options for students, but provide living-learning communities where students can excel. It is also in the process of developing a new Student- Alumni Center that will change the face of the Volker campus. Continuously developing relationships with community partners, such as the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, is bolstering the University’s teaching and research abilities, as well as strengthening its position as a leader in Kansas City’s initiative to become the nation’s center for life sciences. Additionally, UMKC continues to host its annual Life Sciences Day, bringing hundreds of life sciences faculty and researchers from across the region to campus. 2005 UMKC Volleyball The Kangaroos and the Missouri Tigers battled in front of a school record crowd of 810 on Sept. 11, 2002. Swinney Recreation Center • Serves as the practice and event facility for UMKC Volleyball • One of the finest fitness centers in all of Kansas City • Created with a $14.5 million addition to old Swinney Gymnasium • Includes five basketball courts and four racquetball courts • Houses an indoor/outdoor 25-meter swimming pool • Sauna and steam room for relaxation • Two weight rooms allow any type of lift to be performed • Stairmasters, stationary bikes and treadmills all at your ready • Nautilus equipment allows for two types of circuit training Swinney Recreation Center serves as the practice and event facility for UMKC volleyball. It features five basketball courts and two racquetball courts. The Oak Street Housing East project is a collaboration between UMKC and Capstone Development Corporation.
