INTRAVENOUS ACCESS: Central veins<br />
Femoral Vein<br />
Lateral to medial:<br />
Nerve, Artery, Vein, Empty<br />
space, Ligament (NAVEL)<br />
Femoral vein<br />
• If right h<strong>and</strong>ed, st<strong>and</strong> on<br />
patient’s right, palpate femoral<br />
artery<br />
• Prep area carefully; site is<br />
contaminated<br />
• Use a 14, 16 or 18 G (20 G in<br />
child) cannula mounted on 5 ml<br />
syringe<br />
• Avoid injured extremities, if<br />
possible<br />
