c. When a foul occurs so near the expiration of time that the official timer<br />
cannot stop the game clock before time expires or when the foul occurs<br />
after time expires but while the ball is in flight during a try, the period<br />
shall end when the free throw(s) and all related activity have been<br />
completed. (Exception: Rule 11-3.1.a.3)<br />
1. After the expiration of time, only those free throw(s) necessary to<br />
determine a winner or whether an extra period is necessary shall be<br />
awarded.<br />
Art. 4. Except for disqualification or ejection, no penalty or part of a penalty<br />
shall carry over from one half or extra period to another.<br />
Art. 5. No correction of a timing mistake shall be carried over from one half or<br />
extra period. Such a mistake shall be corrected before the start of the subsequent<br />
intermission.<br />
Art. 6. When a technical foul occurs after the ball has become dead to end a<br />
period that is to be followed by another period, the next period shall be started<br />
by administering the free throws. Play shall resume at the point of interruption<br />
for a technical foul. When the technical is a single flagrant 2 foul or a contact<br />
dead ball technical foul, the ball is awarded to the offended team at the division<br />
line on either side of the playing court.<br />
a. When there is no way to determine whether there will be an extra period<br />
until the free throws for a technical foul are administered, the free throws<br />
shall be attempted immediately, as if the technical foul had been part of<br />
the preceding period.<br />
Section 8. Intermission<br />
An intermission is the time between the first and second periods and any extra<br />
period(s). (See Rule 5-6)<br />
Note: For NCAA Division I tournament games, the length of the intermission for<br />
halftime may be increased by five minutes.<br />
Section 9. Periods—Extra<br />
Art. 1. An extra period is the extension of playing time allocated to break a tie<br />
score.<br />
Art. 2. When the score is tied at the end of the second half, play shall continue<br />
without change of baskets for one or more extra period(s) with a one-minute<br />
intermission before each extra period. The game shall end when, at the end of<br />
any extra period, the score is not tied.<br />
Art. 3. The length of each extra period shall be five minutes. As many such<br />
periods as are necessary to break the tie shall be played.<br />
Art. 4. Each extra period is an extension of the second half.<br />
Section 10. Starting Game and Shot Clocks<br />
Art. 1. After time has been out, the game clock shall be started when the official<br />
signals time in. When the official neglects to signal, the official timer shall be<br />
authorized to start the game clock unless an official specifically signals that time<br />
shall continue to be out.<br />
Art. 2. The game clock shall be started when:<br />
a. An inbounds player legally touches the ball on a throw-in;
