MONKEY BUSINESS
Sunday 20th September was a really hot
sunny day, bringing out the day trippers to
Burnham on Sea, filling the car parks and
streets, making car parking a pain! I was
heading for The Old Pier Tavern that afternoon
where every Sunday from 2 till 5 pm
you will find a different Jazz band playing
live. This afternoon ‘Saffron Monkey’ from
Weston-Super-Mare who are Cliff Moore
on Guitar, Richie Blake on Bass, Danny
Cox, Drums and Steve Hacking Sax and
Flute playing their style of experimental
Jazz/Funk, this is their fun band! These
guys are excellent musicians in their own
right, and play together really well. When I
eventually found somewhere to park they
where well into their first set, I can see the
attraction with them playing this music, and
they where clearly enjoying themselves as
was the audience. In the past year they
have become very popular, even taking
time to produce an album ‘Evolution’ which
has been well received, you can buy at

The Pier Tavern, has a good sized stage
with PA and is another popular music venue,
with the ‘Cliff Moore Band’ (Richie is
Cliff’s bass player) appearing regularly. So
‘Saffron Monkey’ is another outlet for this
very talented bunch of musicians, I for one
enjoyed, the tap, bap and bash dash, of
this music, and the way they inter acted
together, I will be looking at their next gig.
