3.4 Data Structure<br />

In order to standardise and facilitate systematic report<strong>in</strong>g a hierarchical system has been<br />

established. This was decided to enable field staff to start <strong>the</strong> work immediately without wait<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> time required to develop a complex database system. This approach, though ra<strong>the</strong>r tedious,<br />

will also help us to develop <strong>the</strong> database, and keep open any fur<strong>the</strong>r automatic transfer <strong>in</strong>to any<br />

database for future applications.<br />

The whole <strong>in</strong>itial structure was built around Excel and Word files and transferred afterwards <strong>in</strong>to a<br />

database with GIS <strong>in</strong>terfaces to ArcView. Table 3.5 summarises <strong>the</strong> fields that are be<strong>in</strong>g collected<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ventory phase.<br />

This Data Model refers to <strong>the</strong> first step envisaged <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> work programme concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>-depth<br />

study <strong>of</strong> <strong>Artisanal</strong> Fisheries <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Western-Central Mediterranean. As agreed, data collected at<br />

this level ma<strong>in</strong>ly concerned <strong>in</strong>ventory data, and were more qualitative than quantitative.<br />

Its ma<strong>in</strong> objective is to ga<strong>the</strong>r, with <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imum <strong>of</strong> resources, and <strong>in</strong> a relatively short time, all<br />

<strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> characteristics to enable us to obta<strong>in</strong> an exhaustive <strong>in</strong>ventory <strong>of</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g communities<br />

perform<strong>in</strong>g artisanal fishery, as def<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g held <strong>in</strong> Malta.<br />

3.5 Coverage<br />

The spatial coverage <strong>of</strong> this exercise is <strong>the</strong> total population under consideration. In o<strong>the</strong>r words,<br />

all <strong>the</strong> artisanal fishery communities must be reported, even where only little ancillary data are<br />

known. As far as <strong>the</strong> data coverage is concerned, four hierarchical levels have been <strong>in</strong>troduced,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g items must be collected:<br />

Y Country Level<br />

Y Port level<br />

Y Community level (Elementary <strong>Artisanal</strong> fishery)<br />

Y Item level (Gear used, Species, Fish<strong>in</strong>g zones)<br />

MEDITERRANEAN<br />

Ports, land<strong>in</strong>g places or any o<strong>the</strong>r localities where an activity def<strong>in</strong>ed as<br />

«<strong>Artisanal</strong> <strong>Fishery</strong>» is present.<br />

Y Name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Port/Locality<br />

Y Region or prov<strong>in</strong>ce (adm<strong>in</strong>istrative) where located<br />

Y Geographical localisation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Port <strong>in</strong> Latitude, Longitude units.<br />

Y Very brief description identify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> port or locality<br />

(few words to expla<strong>in</strong> whe<strong>the</strong>r it is a port or a land<strong>in</strong>g place, a seasonal land<strong>in</strong>g place or<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r).<br />

Y Expected number <strong>of</strong> artisanal fish<strong>in</strong>g units present <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> port (known or subjective estimates)<br />

Y Expected number <strong>of</strong> artisanal fishermen present <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> port (known or subjective estimates).<br />

Y Note. Any ancillary <strong>in</strong>formation useful to <strong>the</strong> work<br />

cDescription <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ports (about half page) describ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> port, its position, <strong>the</strong> activity, <strong>the</strong><br />

importance, <strong>the</strong> coexistence <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r activities related to artisanal fishery, etc. Also <strong>the</strong><br />

presence <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area or <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> tourist areas, mar<strong>in</strong>e or national parks, etc. (In a<br />

separate file)<br />
