HYMNS OF THE DAY
THE RESURRECTION APOLYTIKION, MODE 1
The stone of Thy tomb was sealed by the Judeans and the soldiers
guarded Thy sacred and pure body, the savior arose on the
third day, granting life to the world and because of this, heavenly
hosts did acclaim Thee and called out giver of life. Glory to Thy
Resurrection O Christ, Glory to Thy Kingdom, Glory to Thy Providence
who alone loves mankind.
ISODIKON
Come let us worship falling down before Christ. Save us O Son of
God who didst arise from the dead sing we to Thee Alleluia.
APOLYTIKION – KYRIAKI THE GREAT MARTYR
Thy lamb, Jesus, cries with a great voice: Thou my Bridegroom I
desire and in seeking Thee, I struggle, and I am crucified and
buried with Thee through Thy baptism, and I suffer for Thee, that I
may reign with Thee, and I die for Thee, so that I may live in Thee;
but as a sacrifice without blemish, receive her who with longing
was slain for Thy sake. Through her intercessions, as a merciful
One, save our souls.
TROPARION OF SAINT SOPHIA (HOLY WISDOM)
Blessed are You O Christ our God, Who as all wise the fishermen
You showed forth; By sending Your Holy Spirit down upon them
and through them the universe You drew unto Your net. O lover
of mankind Glory to You.
KONDAKION
Protector of all Christians and unashamed intercessor to our Creator
unchanging, do not turn from the praying voices of all sinners,
but extend your good and timely help to us who in faith call
upon thee. Hasten O Theotokos to intercede for us, the protector
of us all who defends those who honor thee.
EPISTLE READING
Priest: Let Us Attend…
EPISTLE READER..... JOHN KOPATSIS
Reader: Their voice has gone out to all the earth… The
heavens declare the glory of God.
Priest: Wisdom...
Reader: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s Letter to the Galatians
(3:23-29; 4:1-5)
Priest: Let us be Attentive…
BRETHREN, before faith came, we were confined under the law,
kept under restraint until faith should be revealed. So that the law
was our mentor until Christ came, that we might be justified by
faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a
mentor; for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.
For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on
Christ 1 . There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor
free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ
Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring,
heirs according to promise. I mean that the heir, as long as he is
a child, is no better than a slave, though he is the owner of all the
estate; but he is under guardians and trustees until the date set
by the father. So with us; when we were children, we were slaves
to the elemental spirits of the universe. But when the time had
fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under
the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we
might receive adoption as sons.
1. “For as many as have been baptized…” This verse became the baptismal
hymn of the Church. It affirms our unity with Christ and in Christ, to
one another.
GOSPEL READING
The Reading is from The Gospel of St. Matthew
(4:18-23)
At that time, as Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw
two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his
brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.
And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers
of men." Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James
the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with
Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called
them. Immediately they left their boat and their father, and
followed him. And he went about all Galilee, teaching in their
synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and
healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.
“Blessed are You O Christ our God, Who as all wise the fishermen
You showed forth; By sending Your Holy Spirit down upon them
and through them the universe You drew unto Your net. O lover
of mankind Glory to You.”
MINISTRY NEWS
PHILOPTOHOS NEWS
Summer is officially here and everyone is thinking of vacations
and time to get away. Ever notice how empty church is on a
Sunday once summer is here Well the church is not ‘on vacation’
and neither is Philoptohos. Though we don’t have meetings
during the summer we are always here and can be reached for
help. You can find us at church or you can leave a message for
us at the church office and the wonderful people there will pass it
onto us.
OPERATION LACE UP: Our Philoptohos chapter is spearheading
the drive with FOCUS to distribute shoes to the homeless students
in the Los Angeles Unified School District. We need volunteers to
sign up and help us sort, pack and get the shoes ready for distribution
to the schools. There are 60,000 children registered as
‘homeless’ in LAUSD, more than in any other city in the United
States. We will be doing this in the month of July. Please see the
flyer in the Herald newsletter for sign up information or you may
call Judie Christopoulos at 626-840-7508.
Our fall meetings will begin September 22nd. Please mark your
calendars and join us for our first meeting of the year. Our speaker
will be Tina Russek from the Los Angeles Mission. Tina is a very
enthusiastic speaker who informs us of what is going on at the
Mission and the work that they do. The Mission is Christian based,
offering bible classes and counseling for the people who come
to them for help. The Cheerios and coffee drive that we held the
last two years has been very successful and we hope to do it
again in October. Mornings are very busy times for the Mission
because the adults and children who have been out on the
street all night are tired, cold and hungry.
Philoptohos must continue to reach out and do the work of our
Lord. The poor, the destitute, the hungry, the aged, the sick, the
unemployed, the orphaned, … those who may need assistance.
That is what Philoptohos is here for.
“For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have
me” John 12:8.
With love in Christ’s service,
Virginia Noyes and the Philoptohos Board of Directors
Nami Walks: The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Los Angeles
County will hold its 10th Annual Nami Walks on Saturday, October
5th at the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica. For more information,
please contact our own Jean Harris, Vice-President at
JeanHarris@nami-av.org.
Director. Additional information will be forthcoming in the August
Herald.
City of Hope: Pediatric Booklet and Service: Dr. Randi McAllister is
our liaison and will keep us abreast of date and times.
Used Clothing and Canned Goods: Thank you for all the generous
donation of used clothing during this year-long project. Please
continue your donations as there are still many we need to reach.
Please identify all clothing donations on the outside of the bags
by indicating whether they are for men, women or children. The
two new receptacles for "used clothing" and "canned goods" are
working great. They are located side by side, in the general area
of the nursery. Thank you!
Get on the Bus: Statistics on the number of buses and children
transported this past Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day will be relayed
as soon as we receive them. Your responses to our request
for donations to sponsor a bus were heartwarming! Thank you.
The wall-Las Memorias Project: We continue to support Richard
Zaldivar, Executive Director, in their quest to achieve the same
goals we have for continued AIDS education, awareness and
prevention.
Newsletter was mailed recently and will be on the website shortly
at: www.philanthropiaministry.org. We thank Perry Lambert who is
coordinating our website. (Note: We are in the midst of preparing
a “Spring-Summer” combined issue of the newsletter this year
while we get our office “back to normal” after the repairs. Thank
you for your understanding.)
God bless you!
With love,
For those who are sick or suffering…
St. James advises us, “If anyone among you is sick, let him call
for the elders of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing
him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith
will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has
committed sins, he will be forgiven.” (James 5:13-14)
Ensuring that St Sophia’s parishioners continue to be cared-for
and prayed-for, please list names below of those in our midst
that need prayer. Feel free to request the personal prayer of
one of our priests after services, or to schedule this with one our
