Page 2DEAN’S MESSAGE“HAPPY NEW YEAR 2012”February 2012The Wilson Hanks Family Cultural Center forPerforming Arts and Sports facilityGeneral Assembly roomA miracle has happened! A dream has cometrue. Our new community center is complete andready for use. After over 10 years of hoping andplanning, the ribbon cutting and Holy WaterBlessing (Agiasmo) will take place after the DivineLiturgy on Sunday February 5 th . MetropolitanGerasimos will preside both at the HierarchicalLiturgy and the grand formal opening. When we began our fund raising efforts we offeredoverall building and specific facility naming rightsto one and all. The over-all center naming rightwas taken by Michael Huffington. Therefore theoverall community center will be called theHuffington Center at Saint Sophia. The GrandFellowship Hall and Pavilion is named theManiatakos Fellowship Hall and the culturalfacilities and gymnasium are called The WilsonHanks Family Cultural Center. All other facilities, auditoriums and rooms will be acknowledged anddedicated to the appropriate donors.Frankly, I sometimes pinch myself thinking I‟mdreaming and when I wake up it will be April 14,1995, the first Sunday I celebrated the DivineLiturgy at Saint Sophia Cathedral. Our cathedralcampus was much, much different than it is now.By the Grace of God we have made tremendousprogress. The miracle is from God who providedand worked through the good and generoushearts and hands of so many people. Our newcenter has the following features:53,820 sq. feet as compared to 22,500 sq. ft. inthe old buildingThe Maniatakos Fellowship Hall, a premierebanquet space along with The Pavilion, anintimate dining roomA professionally designed industrial kitchenBoard room, conference rooms, library/museum, music room, bookstore and gift shopAdditional offices and classroomsincreased storage facilities for all ministriesLobby with elevator accessing the 2 nd floor andmuch, much moreFrom the beginning we wanted a beautiful as wellas functional facility. We found ways to makebeauty necessary and necessity beautiful. TheHuffington Center compliments the design anddetail of our magnificent Saint Sophia Cathedralcomplete with the three Byzantine domes. Theybelong together, each serving different purposesbut both created for the Glory of God.There are no words to express gratitude to the SaintSophia Foundation Board of Trustees and ParishCouncil for defining the vision and goals for thefuture and to our kind and generous Donors fortheir Christian generosity in transforming our dreamto reality.Since the establishment of the Los Angeles GreekOrthodox community in1908, each generation hascarried on the pride of the past, the respect for thepresent and the vision for the future. It is thisageless spirit of devotion and Christian love thatkeeps our faith, culture and community alive.BRAVO MAS.With gratitude to our Lord and love for all.

First, I wishto thank Mary Gallanis for once again baking thebeautiful Vasilopita that we cut on January 8th. Itwas a work of art and delicious! Thank you to OlgaJordan for all her work decorating the FellowshipTent. It was beautiful! I also wish to thank MariannaPolitis and Helene Ballas for getting the cookies &biscotti and for setting up everything beforechurch. To all the ladies who volunteered their timeto serve at the coffee hour and clean up, I thankyou for all you did. It was a fabulous,fun-filled night! Perry Lambert gave us a wonderful, funny and delightful show. I want to thank ourchairman, Marianna Politis, for all of her hard work. She did an amazing job and worked many longhours putting the evening together. Many thanksalso to Jan Pastras for putting together the programbook, and to Helene Ballas and Diane Pruett forcollecting all the signatures that went into thebook. It takes many, many weeks to put an eventlike this together and our ladies are always up tothe task for making our fundraisers spectacular!Thank you to all of the ladies and committeemembers who worked on the evening.Congratulations once again, to Father Lambert.Panda Axios! Our new project to feed our neighbors has startedthis month. We will now be collecting „a brownbag lunch‟ once a month from anyone who wishesto donate a sandwich, maybe a small bottle ofwater or milk, and perhaps some fruit or cookies. The sandwiches can be made from any type oflunch meat, cheese, etc. but please do not putany dressings on the sandwiches so we don‟t riskanything spoiling. Many Philoptohos members areready to go out around Pico and Normandie, andmeet the people who are out there and need ahand. Father Bakas has made great strides aroundthe Cathedral, and he reminds us that we are the„lighthouse on rocky shores‟. It‟s time to leave our„comfort zone‟ and go out to the neighborhood tosee where we can actually do some hands-onwork. We will be informing you of the dates ofthese collections. Normally it will be on the firstSunday of the month, unless there is a conflict.Watch the weekly bulletins for updates. Of course,we know there are other churches and missions inthe neighborhood that help the homeless and thehungry, but that should not stop us from gettinginvolved. This is the purpose of Philoptohos. OurCathedral stands like a beacon in an area thatneeds so much help. Now is the time for us to goout there and do what we can.We hope you will consider joining in with the workof Philoptohos. Our mission is to help alleviatesuffering and provide assistance when we can. There is nothing more rewarding than to offer love, compassion and support to those who aresuffering.“There but for the Grace of God….” We mustnever forget that there are many people walkingon different paths in this life with no idea where theroad is taking them. With love in Christ‟s service,Virginia Noyesand the Philoptohos Board of Directors

February 2012 Page 9Hellenic AcademyThere are a number of words in the Greek vocabulary, for which there is no corresponding one in English. Oneamong these, which lately has become a matter ofreflection, is the word φιλότιμο; filotimo.Especially in music and cinematography, which are appealingto the majority, filotimo is presented as a virtue, compensating for any lack of financial or social stature. Our Hellenic Academy aims at the continuation of theFilotimo is a compound word, comprised of the verbφιλώ; filo which means „love‟ and τιμή; timi which canbe translated as honour or dignity. Consistent to itsdefinition, it is explained by scholars as one‟s love of his/her dignity. In the same vein, filotimo is suggested tocharacterize someone who has a strong sense of dutyand he/she is particularly dedicated and consciousabout how he/she is fulfilling his/her obligations.Greek language and culture. Meaning that it is not onlyabout giving a pure translation or academic definitionsbut is also about conveying concepts tied to our culture.I am filled with joy and gratitude every time I recognize itin people‟s actions; in the same way I experience deepdisappointment and frustration when I realize itsabsence.Truthfully speaking, filotimo is a hard and rather complexconcept to explain. Beyond any given academicdefinition, it is my humble opinion that its essence hasbeen best captured and beautifully articulated by someof our Greek Orthodox Fathers. They often referred to itas the „pristine distillate of kindness‟ (apostagma kalosinis) or as „the humble person‟s love‟. When a sensitiveheart is filled up with gratitude to the Lord, the ElderPaisios explains, it is constantly aiming at retuning thekindness it has received.Filotimo is a quality highly regarded and praised in theGreek culture, independently of social or financialstatus. There are various references to it in Greekliterature, prose and poetry, music and cinematography.Let us pray that as the New Year is taking its course, ourLord will bless all of us involved with a little or a little bitmore of this quality. This little extra we can do, can elevateour personal and professional interactions andwork from good to better or from better to brilliant.Because there is no better way to teach, than byexample.Andri ChristodoulidouDirector of the Hellenic Academy
