Page 2DEAN’S MESSAGE“MAKING A DIFFERENCE THIS CHRISTMAS”HeraldOne day, as he began hisdaily prayer, a holy hermit sawa crippled man, a motherbegging for food for her malnourishedchild and a victimof what must have been a severebeating, passing by him.Seeing them, the holy manturned to God and said,―Great Lord! How is it thatsuch a loving Creator can seeso much suffering and yet donothing about it?‖ And deepwithin his heart he heard Godreply, ―I have done somethingabout it. I made you.‖Yes, God made us to be Hishands and feet, and to be Hishealing body in the person ofJesus Christ. If God‘s work isgoing to be done, it must bedone through us and by us. IfGod‘s work is going to bedone at our Saint Sophia Cathedral,God needs our willinghands, feet and especially ourgenerous hearts. This Christmas is very specialfor our beloved cathedral. Anew multi-purpose communitycenter will be rising on ourproperty and will double thesize of our old outgrown facility. In a sense, it is a Christmas giftfrom God, made possible bythe loving and generoushearts of our people. For thosewho were waiting to see if thisproject would really happenbefore making a major gift orpledge, now is the time to respondwith generosity and joy!At a recent eulogy, I heard thefollowing words from a friend ofthe deceased and also a generousfriend of mine. He said, ―Ibelieve that the entire worldturns on and that all of life isdetermined by the answer tothis question: What do youhave to offer and when willyou give your gift?‖ These veryprofound words are the essenceof Christmas and thewhole Christmas message. How can we expect to receiveunless we give ? Saint Sophia‘sbest days are yet to come.God provides and His provisionscome through your heartsand hands. What can youoffer this Christmas to the workof the Lord? Our new community center stillneeds the generous gifts fromthose who can give throughgenerosity and through sacrifice. An ancient Christian prayersays it best:―Dearest Lord,Teach me to be generous.Teach me to serve you as youdeserve. To give and not to countcost; To fight and not to heed thewound; To toil and not to see rest;To labor and not to seekreward;Save that of feeling that I doyour will.Amen.‖When you are ready to makeyour commitment andpledge to this exciting project, please see me or amember of our Foundation orParish Council.Merry Christmas my belovedbrothers and sisters in Christ.See you in church. In Christ,“When you write or update your will, please remember Saint Sophia Cathedral. Your gift will live into eternity.”

Herald Page 3PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE―A year of changes and challenges…”The year 2010 has been a year ofextraordinary changes for us asindividuals, as families, as a nationand even as a church. Regardlessof how many changes confront us,we can always turn to our Faith forinspiration, guidance and comfort.Orthodoxy, by its very nature, is theunchanging guiding light that helpsus through life. The holiday season is upon usagain and as in past years, we arekicking off our 31st Saint SophiaCathedral “Cash for Christmas2010” raffle. The proceeds fromthis effort assists our Cathedral inpaying the insurance premiums forall of our properties with the exceptionof the residence building. At this time, I ask for your loyal andgenerous help in supporting thisimportant ministry, by participatingin our effort. The raffle cash prizesrange from $500 to the grand prizeof $25,000.The Parish Council, with the guidanceand careful analysis of theExecutive Council, decided todecrease the budget for the year2011, by approximately $400,000.This will help offset the deficit thatwill be realized by the loss of theparish hall and perhaps the festivalrevenues. In these hard economic times, Iknow that the last words youwant to hear are ―give to SaintSophia.‖ I also know, that withoutgiving, the mere existence ofour parish would be extremelychallenging. Please continuewith your stewardship commitmentand fulfill your pledge thismonth, so we can meet all ofour financial obligations. Wethank you for what you give. The 13th Annual ChristmasMusicfest will take place underthe Byzantine Dome on Sunday,December 5th at 7pm.Glory to the New Born King !This year we are honored withspecial guest appearances byMichele Prappas, Ernest Gekas, and Carole Oueijan. Please show your support to ourChoir and our guests by attendingthis wonderful event. As the year comes to a close, may I take this opportunity tosincerely thank Father John,Father Bill, Father Peter, the ParishCouncil and all the Cathedralorganizations & ministries for thesupport, agape and trust theyhave shown me through theyears.Merry Christmas and Happy NewYear 2011 !!In His ServicePanos A.Angels-Angeletopoulos“and she willbring forth aSON and youshall call Hisname JESUS,for He willsave Hispeople fromtheir sins”Luke 2:1-7

The documentary highlights the first generationGreek Americans. This film is narrated andhosted by Academy Award Winner OlympiaDukakis."The Promise of Tomorrow‖ is part 2 of the awardwinningseries, ―The Greeks of Southern CaliforniaThrough the Century.‖ It is a universal story of thefirst generation‘s Greek American experience, withcourageous stories from those who served bravelyduring wartime and heartwarming stories beingraised Greek at home while struggling to be Americanoutside the home. Opportunities for successare endless and achievements resonate with thefirst generation as they become part of America‘shistory. The question of identity permeates throughouttheir adult life: "We are not just Greeks; we are notjust Americans, but we are a new breed – GreekAmericans!"FR. BAKAS ON A JOURNEY OF FAITH:EAST AND WESTOur Dean, Fr. John Bakas has been invited to joinMetropolitan Gerasimo of San Francisco, MetropolitanNikitas, Roman Catholic Archbishop GeorgeNiederauer of San Francisco accompanied bythree of his auxiliary bishops and a small delegationof Orthodox and Roman Catholic lay people onwhat has been called a ―Journey of Faith: East andWest‖. The journey began on Sunday, November21 and goes through December 2 nd . It is a goodwilljourney which will include a visit with Pope BenedictXVI at the Vatican in Rome, a visit in Athens withArchbishop Ieronymos of Athens and all Greece, and a visit with our Patriarch Bartholomew in Constantinople. The journey is intended to help promoteimproved relations between the western andeastern churches. The honor of being included inthis esteemed group was bestowed upon Fr. Bakasfor his work in improving ecumenical relationsamongst churches in Los Angeles. It is also an acknowledgementof Saint Sophia Cathedral‘s role asa leader among churches in the western part of ournation.COMMUNITY NEWSGreek Obituary Service is now availablefor Saint Sophia CathedralWe are working with a service called Greek Obituary. This service will add a valuable optional servicefor Cathedral members and friends. Too oftenwhen a loved one passes, we may not have aneasy and straight-forward method to contacteveryone in the community about Trisagion andfuneral services. Traditional newspapers can costover $600 for a death notice with a photograph.Fortunately, Greek Obituary‘s fee is much less thanpublishing a notice in the newspaper. For only $50,patrons can include a photo and a much longerbiography. Like large national obituary services, visitors have the option of signing a complimentaryonline guest book. One of the major improvementsover the large national services is that Greek Obituary‘sobituary list and guest books are free to accessand read. They will not expire after a year orrequire you to pay for access to an obituary. This isnot only a wonderful remembrance for our community, but a portion of the proceeds will benefitSaint Sophia Cathedral. Standard obituaries canhave one (1) page of obituary text, about 350-400words, and one photo for their tribute. If a moreextravagant obituary with multiple photos or moretext is desired, enhanced obituaries are also available.Obituary text should be sent either by standarde-mail, or as a Word/WordPerfect attachmentto greekobituary@gmail.com. Enhancedobituaries can also have an optional backgroundimage as a tribute, including the cross and militarybranch logos.Greek Obituary is managed by one of our Cathedralmembers, Dean Tripodes. After working withseveral churches, AHEPA chapters, and thenational Pan-Icarian Brotherhood, it was determinedthere was a need for reasonable cost Greekobituaries. Greek Obituary is integrated into ourCathedral website, and includes obituaries andtributes from several communities throughout theUnited States. Greek Obituary welcomes all Philhellenestoo, non-Greeks (including spouses) who arefamily members and friends of the Greek community. Most importantly, the service welcomes everyonewho has been a part of the Greek OrthodoxChurch. Please go online to our Cathedral website atstsophia.org and click on the Events menu tab,and then on Obituaries.
