HYMNS OF THE DAY
Resurrection Apolytikion - Tone 5
The Word eternal with the Father and the Spirit, born of the
Virgin for our Salvation, let us believers praise and worship;
for he was pleased to go up on the Cross in his flesh, to
endure death and raise the dead, by his glorious
resurrection.
Apolytikion of St Mary of Egypt - Tone 8
In you the image was preserved with exactness, O Mother;
for taking up your cross, you followed Christ, and by your
deeds you taught us to overlook the flesh, for it passes away,
but to attend to the soul since it is immortal. Wherefore,
O righteous Mary, your spirit rejoices with the Angels.
Troparion of Saint Sophia (Holy Wisdom)
Blessed are You O Christ our God, Who as all wise the
fishermen You showed forth; By sending Your Holy Spirit
down upon them and through them the universe You drew
unto Your net. O lover of mankind glory to You.
Kontakion - Tone 2
Protector of Christians, champion undefeated, mediator
most sure with our creator, disregard not the voice of prayer
of sinners, but come quickly in your goodness, to help us who
cry out to you with faith: Be swift to intercede, make haste to
supplicate, O Theotokos, protector always of those who
honour you.
Megalynarion
O Lady, full of grace...all creation rejoices in you... the orders
of Angels... and the human race together. O sanctified
temple and heavenly minded Paradise, the pride of
virgins...from you God became incarnate...and He who
existed from before all ages, became a child. For our Lord
made your womb a throne for Himself, and thus He made
your body more spacious than the heavens. O lady, full of
grace...all creation rejoices in you. Glory to you!
EPISTLE READING
EPISTLE READER..... JIM BOLTINGHOUSE
Priest: Let Us Attend…
Reader: Make your vows to the Lord our God and
Perform them….God is known in Judah; his name is great
in Israel.
Priest: Wisdom…
Reader: The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews
9:11-14
Priest: Let us be Attentive...
Reader: BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a high
priest of the good things that have come, then through
the greater and more perfect tent (not made with
hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for
all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and
calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal
redemption. For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with
the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a
heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how
much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the
eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God,
purify your conscience from dead works to serve the
living God.
6

GOSPEL READING
The Reading is from The Gospel of Mark 10:32-45
At that time, Jesus taking the twelve again, he began to
tell them what was to happen to him, saying, "Behold,
we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will
be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and
they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the
Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and
scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will
rise." And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came
forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you
to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to
them, "What do you want me to do for you?" And they
said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and
one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them,
"You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to
drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the
baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to
him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup
that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with
which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at
my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is
for those for whom it has been prepared." And when the
ten heard it, they began to be indignant of James and
John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them,
"You know that those who are supposed to rule over the
Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise
authority over them. But it shall not be so among you;
but whoever would be great among you must be your
servant, and whoever would be first among you must be
slave of all. For the Son of man also came not to be
served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for
many."
MINISTRY NEWS
PHILOPTOHOS NEWS
Our Mother’s Day Luncheon and Fashion Show will be held on
Saturday, May 11 at the Universal Sheraton Hotel. We will be honoring
the Philoptohos Mother of the Year, Susan Giokaris Patzakis. Invitations
have been mailed. If you do not receive an invitation, please leave a
message at the church office and we will mail one to you. The work of
Philoptohos is often emotionally difficult but also rewarding. Please
join us and support our outreach efforts.
*Don’t forget our SEE’S candy sale is taking place on Sundays after
church. We will be selling for 2 more Sundays: today and next week
on the 28th! All proceeds will go to our Kids ‘n Cancer Camps. Once
the candy is sold out we won’t be able to get anymore so be sure you
stop by our table in the coffee hour! The Kids ‘n Cancer camps are
located in California, Arizona and Washington. Please give these
children and their families a little enjoyment.
PLANTS FOR SHUT-INS: We will be delivering plants to our shut-ins for
Easter. With Easter being late we will not be able to have ‘lillies’ but
we will get a very lovely plant. If you know of someone who should
receive a plant or you will help deliver them, please call Helene Ballas
at 818-642-8011. Plants will be available for pickup on Palm Sunday.
Do you like to bake or have a little time on your hands? If anyone
would like to bake some koulourakia, or other Greek cookies, we
would like to send a ‘care package’ to our newly ‘adopted
seminarian’ at Holy Cross. His name is Kevin Edgecomb, and he has
taken the name “Nektarios”. We will be his ‘adopted’ Philoptohos
chapter until he graduates in 2015.
The mission of Philoptohos is to help the poor, the needy and the sick.
We are joining in a food drive for our ‘neighborhood’ around the
Cathedral with Saint Thomas Church next door. There are bags
available in the coffee hour foyer if you need one and our Sunday
school students will be provided with a shopping bag and an
attached list. Bags need to be returned to the Sunday school director
Eleni Yokas no later than Good Friday.
Also, we are collecting undergarments and socks for the women and
children in the safe houses that are run by the Domestic Violence
Agency on Sundays. As the Earth undergoes a renewal of life from the
dormant, we must give these victims hope that their lives will be
‘renewed’. No longer is domestic violence confined to husbands and
wives – now it’s our daughters and granddaughters in high school and
college. Please help donate some of these items when you see them
on ‘sale’ or ‘special’ in the stores.
With love in Christ’s service,
Virginia Noyes and the Philoptohos Board of Directors
As we enter this Lent, participating in prayer and fasting, make
it joyful by feasting on showing “Love of neighbor” through
almsgiving. Once again, the AMNOS Ministry will make an effort
to fill a 5 ton truck with your donation of quality clothing to be
distributed to those less fortunate.
The Old Testament Prophet Isaiah suggests this bit of wisdom,
...the fast that I have chosen...is when I see the naked, to cover
him with clothing... Make this Lent even more joyful by
conducting your own clothing drive at school, work or in your
neighborhood.
St. Sophia's 10th annual, 5 TONS OF LOVE clothing drive will take
place over the next seven weeks. (Drop off location
For those who are sick or suffering…
St. James advises us, “If anyone among you is sick, let him call for
the elders of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing
him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will
save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has
committed sins, he will be forgiven.” (James 5:13-14)
Ensuring that St Sophia’s parishioners continue to be cared-for and
prayed-for, please list names below of those in our midst that need
prayer. Feel free to request the personal prayer of one of our
