Page 6July 2013STEWARDSHIPSummer is Here and the Time Is RightWhen I was an elementary school student, I was often given,at the start of the school year, an assignment to write a paperentitled, “How I Spent My Summer Vacation.” I dreaded thethought of having to write that paper. As a kid, summers were long and for those of you who areparents, I don’t have to tell you, we were busy from the lastday of school, ‘till they first day back the following semester. For me the term “Lazy Days of Summer” did not apply. I mustconfess, I was much lazier after I returned to school in the fall.During the summer though, I was a bundle of energy. With somuch energy to burn, I needed every extra minute of thoselong summer days. I was up and at ‘em early in the morningand didn’t have to be home until after the street lights cameon and was grateful that the days are longer in the summer.Busy, busy, busy, doing what? That was the problem, when itcame time to write that paper. Are you kidding me. A wholesummer has just gone by and I don’t have anything to writeabout. How did I spend my summer vacation? For me,summer was great. First of all, no school assignments; youjust don’t know how happy that made me. I mean, think aboutit. There I was, back on the first day of school hating the veryfirst assignment being handed out to me.My summer days, were easy to explain, up in the morning, onmy bicycle and off to the park for a long day, playing baseballwith my friends, exhaust myself, return home and repeat thefollowing day. Why didn’t I just submit in the same paper Iturned in last year? Sometimes the teacher would ask us toread our papers out loud before the class and I couldn’tbelieve the stories that some of the other students wouldshare. Little children, gallivanting around the globe for weeks, sometimes even months at a time to far off places, some, where they didn’t even play baseball. What a way to spendyour summer. Many of them would travel to visit family, quite often theirgrand parents. I would visit my grand parents as well, everyday. My Yiayia and Papou lived right across the street fromme and I had aunts, uncles and cousins that lived right downthe block. I tell you they don’t make neighborhoods like thatanymore, those were the days. I had everyone and everythingI needed, a mere bike ride away from my door step. Still, Icouldn’t possibly tell my simple summer vacation story aftermy classmates had shared their stories of visits to exotic, faraway places.Summer’s here again and the time is right to get out of town. Most kids are out of school and many parents plan theirvacations from work during the summer months so that thewhole family can travel together. Schools out and the kidscouldn’t be happier, a break from work is just what the parentsneed. As we give ourselves, young and old, a much deservedbreak during these summer months, let us be mindful andremember that the good work of our Lord Jesus Christ, by ourhands, the stewards of His church, St. Sophia Cathedral, through its ministries is ongoing and never rests. As theApostles were selected by Christ we, too, were also selectedto be “God’s fellow workers, you are God’s field, you areGod’s building. (1st Corinthians 3:9). In God’s building thelights are always left on and His good work is always ongoing. No matter where we may be this summer, Christ is there andwe can always remain connected to His church if we keep thegood works of St. Sophia in our hearts and in our mind. Weare blessed with many talents and gifts and the resources thatconnect us and permit us to contribute to this good work fromanywhere in the world. Our great minds receive from youprophetic insights into your laws, and reveal to us the depth ofyour creative wisdom... Glory to you for the inventiveness ofthe human mind, Glory to you for the invigorating effort ofwork. (From An Akathist Hymn in Praise of God's Creation byMetropolitan Tryphon of Turkestanov.)Some of us will not travel at all this summer and may remainto carry on the good work of the many ministries of St. Sophia, while others may travel for a time but are sure to pick up andcontribute upon their return. These days it seems like traveling itself requires a great dealof work. So, much preparation and effort are required thatmany of us say we need a vacation from our vacation. Beforewe break away, and while we plan and prepare let’sremember to add St. Sophia to our “to do list.” Let’s makesure that if we haven’t yet filled out our stewardship pledgecard to do so and if we have already filled it out, let’s makesure that we are current with our pledge status. We can even remain current while we are away. Thanks toour beautiful, interactive website that permits us to makestewardship pledges and payments online, one time singlepayments as well as reoccurring payments. If you haven’t yetexplored the St. Sophia website I strongly encourage you todo so. In addition to the interactive stewardship page, it willalso keep you abreast of the many ministry activities that areongoing throughout the coming dog days of summer.Christina and I would like to wish you all a blessed and joyfilled summer. Thank you for your continued efforts andcontributions to the many ministries of St. Sophia that permitus, guided by our spiritual fathers, Father John, Father Allanand Father Peter, to do the good work that Christ has calledeach of us to do.If any of you happen to be traveling this summer we lookforward to seeing you upon your return. Let us wish you ‘KaloTaxidi.’ Have a safe and wonderful trip and if I may, pleasepermit me to quote from American humorist, author and radiopersonality, Tom Bodett, his most famous tag line, “We’llleave the lights on for ya’.”I hope to have a chance to hear all about it when you return. You can tell me about your summer and I’ll tell you aboutmine. Who knows, I just might surprise you and have aninteresting story to share.Thank you,Dean & Christina Peratsakis

Technical and Economic Market Potential for CHP in Hotels and CasinosTable ES5 summarizes the results of the market screening. There are nearly 9,500 hotels ofappropriate size to warrant consideration. To date, only 79 of the hotels within these size categories haveinstalled CHP. Appropriately sized CHP systems installed in this target market provide a technicalmarket potential of 2,773 MW. Based on a simple economic market screen undertaken using typicalCHP cost and performance values for each size and average gas and electric prices by state, theeconomic market potential was estimated at 1,456 MW.Table ES5Screening ApproachHotels in U.S.Hotels with CHPSummary of Hotel CHP Market Screening Results100-1996,32333Number of Rooms200-499 500-999 1000-1999 2000+2,614 379 116 3230 9 5 2Total9,46479Remaining Market (sites) 6,290 2,584 370 111 30 9,385Appropriate CHP Size (kW) 90 380 1,000 5,000 10,000Technical Market Potential (MW) 566 982 370 555 300 2,773Economic Market Potential (MW) 130 371 170 495 290 1,456% of Market Economic 22.9% 37.8% 45.9% 89.2% 96.7% 52.5%ConclusionsThis analysis has shown that there is significant market potential for CHP in the hotel and casinomarket. This market potential is concentrated in the larger, full-service facilities. While there are nearly48,000 hotels in the U.S., less than 10,000 of them have the usage and energy characteristics suitable forCHP using current technology. The economic cut-off for this analysis was set at 100-rooms or greater. The large mega-resort hotels of 1,000 rooms or greater represent a distinct and very importantmarket segment. These huge facilities have more in common from an energy standpoint with a smalluniversity than with a small business hotel or roadside motel. These facilities are typically, though notexclusively, associated with the casino gaming. There are multiple restaurants, nightclubs and otherentertainment venues, spas, casinos, health clubs, movie theaters, shops, and often large attractions –zoos, aquaria, fountains, even an “active” volcano. The facilities occupy millions of square feet ofbuilding space and the energy usage intensity per square foot is much higher than for the typical businesshotel. There are 148 hotels in the U.S. with more than 1,000 rooms. The economic market potential forCHP in these mega-sites represents 54% of the total economic potential for CHP in the hotel industry. There are 32 hotels with more than 2,000 rooms and 75% of them are on the Las Vegas strip. Thesefacilities could support CHP systems with an average size of 10 MW each representing 20% of theeconomic potential. One of the big drivers for CHP in these large facilities is to provide the thousands of tons of airconditioning needed using the waste heat from the on-site electric generation. Industrial gas turbinegenerators can produce power for the facility baseload needs and the high temperature exhaust can beconverted to steam in heat recovery steam generators that can be used to drive a central heating andcooling plant.Energy and Environmental Analysis, Inc. vii Hotel and Casino CHP Market Assessment
