Page 2DEAN’S MESSAGE“It’s Not Going According to Plan!”October 2012In this high tech age, I still use a Day-Timer to “regulate”my time planning. I still like the feel of paper and pen. Formost of my day timer life, I began each day making a “todo” list and then spent the rest of the day checking it offwith what got done! After decades of trying to govern mylife by lists, it has finally hit me that if I can’t get even oneday to go according to plan, what am I doing trying to getweeks or even months to go “according to plan”? As apriest, I don’t think there has been one day when myschedule has gone the way I planned it. My life has notgone in straight paths. Most people’s lives have not either. My path has often been in circles.I now begin my day with a different idea than that of alist. Things just don’t always go according to plan. I nowbegin it with the realization that we have a choice everyday regarding the attitudes we will embrace for the planof the day. We cannot change the past…we cannot controlthe results and outcome of our “to do” list. The only thingwe can do is to be in control of our attitudes. I amconvinced that life is actually 10% what happens to meand 90% how I react to it.A case in point is what happened to me last year on anunusually hot September day trying to visit a 19 year oldGreek Orthodox young man in the Los Angeles county jail.He was charged with possession, use and sale of heroine. His frantic father called me from the mid-west andwanted me to help this boy or at least see that he was ok.Waiting for the wheels of the system to turn and give meaccess to the boy in this mammoth facility wasexasperatingly slow and exhausting. I watched the pimpsin white suits bailing out their prostitutes; lawyers withbulging briefcases bailing out their clients; drug dealersbailing out their peddlers; girls bailing out theirboyfriends; and drunks who disturbed the peace the nightbefore slinking out on their own.As I took in the sleazy parade, I hate to admit that I beganto see everyone in it as a full-time obsessive-compulsive,addictive, hopeless loser. By noon, I lost the desire toknow any more about them than that. At mid-afternoon,still waiting to see the young man, I decided to go out fora cold drink. As I walked out the doors, I met a tall lankyAfrican-American man, wearing a black suit with apriest’s clerical collar…a jail chaplain, I thought, on hisway out at the end of a day’s work of grace. I introducedmyself on our way to the parking lot. He gave me thefeeling that he had time to talk awhile. So I asked him tojoin me for a drink. “Glad to” he said. “There’s a Denny’srestaurant right around the block.”It turned out he wasn’t a priest. He was an insurancesalesman. He devoted one day out of every week to bringa moment of comfort and grace to those locked up in theLos Angeles county jail. He wore the clerical collar so thateveryone there knew what he was up to. I asked him thesame sort of questions any cynical curious citizen would.“Don’t you keep meeting the same people coming in andgoing out?” Recidivists, repeaters, losers? “Well” hereplied, “every person locked up in that jail has gotsomebody with a key to let him out. But I meet people inmy business everyday who are locked up in a cell insidetheir hearts and nobody on earth has a key to let themout. So I don’t see an enormous difference betweenthem.”“Okay, true enough, but still, aren’t most of the men andwomen you meet inside this jail hard-core losers?” I wasthinking, God forgive me, the same thing about the youngman I was hoping to visit. “Well, maybe they are butthat’s not the way I divide people up. The only twocategories of people I really care about are the forgivenpeople and the un-forgiven people.” He had me. I worethe legitimate clerical collar, his was for access, yet I wasthe Pharisee wearing a cross of Him who was thought ofas a loser and criminal. On the cross in agony He said:“Father forgive them for they do not know what they do.”10% is what happened to me that day and 90% was howI responded in attitude. That jail encounter with theinsurance salesman opened my eyes and changed myattitude and I realized that as God’s children we are notlosers but capable of redemption. After a number ofvisits, prayer and intercession with the court on hisbehalf the young man was eventually released on bail, made contact with his family but was sentenced to 2 ½years in jail. But at least he is receiving drugrehabilitation in his incarceration and as a first-timeoffender he is up for parole early next year.Thank God. Life rarely happens according to plan. It suredidn’t that day. In the 90% personal response to the 10%,it is best to say may God’s will be done. Fortunately, He isin control of it all. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding in all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”Proverbs 3:5-6

October 2012 Page 3PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEIt was a spectacular return for our L.A. Greek Fest! Many heartfelt congratulations to our extraordinary Chairpersons,Ted and Jan Pastras and their wonderful committee for putting on a stupendous event. If you attended any portionof this year’s Fest you felt the inimitable spirit and overall enthusiasm of the event. Our plateia thronged with smilingpeople and everything worked beautifully with minimum difficulty. Our Mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa joined us onSaturday, as did our Honorary Chairperson, Rita Wilson. In addition, this year’s guest performer from Greece wasThanos Petrelis, who sang Greek songs enthralling the crowd of spectators. The food and drinks were delicious andplentiful. Many thanks to Nick Begakis and Joyce Kokkinides who ensured our kitchen ran smoothly and everythingwas served fresh. The music and dancing filled the neighborhood and Fr. John’s singing was a beautiful crescendoto our LA Greek Fest. Our Cathedral filled with visitors interested in the Orthodox faith and our church. We have threenew catacumens from those who attended our Fest. Most importantly, this event is run by our volunteers. Manythanks to all of our volunteers who gave so lovingly of their time and talent. We are grateful to each and every oneof you for all that you have done this last month to help make this festival a tremendous success. Results of the FestivalRaffle are in this issue of the Herald and the final net dollar results of the Fest will be printed next month. Our L.A.Greek Fest in the heart of the Byzantine Latino Quarter was truly a pinnacle of success! Congratulations to all!We have many exciting events coming up in the next few weeks. On October 12, the Saint Sophia Camp committeewill be holding its annual Golf Tournament fundraiser at the Montebello Country Club. For those of you who play golf, please put together a foursome or twosome and support this event. There were over 200 children who attendedSaint Sophia Camp this past year. They had a terrific youth experience filled with fellowship and faith. Many life-longfriendships are made through Camp. Also, on Sunday October 28 we will be celebrating Oxi Day with a cultural presentation and luncheon by our HellenicAcademy. Oxi Day commemorates the response given by Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas to the ultimatumpresented by Italy and the Axis powers. On October 28, 1940 it was demanded that Greece allow Axis forces toenter Greek territory and occupy certain unspecified "strategic locations" or otherwise face war. Mr. Metaxasanswered with a single laconic word: όχι (No!). In response to Metaxas's refusal, Italian troops stationed in Albania, attacked the Greek border—thus heralding the beginning of Greece's participation in World War II. Our HellenicAcademy children have been hard at work in putting together a wonderful program and we hope you will attend.Next month, on Saturday, November 3, we will be celebrating the 60 th anniversary of Saint Sophia Cathedral with anevening gala. Ms. Anne Giapapas and Ms. Eleni Manolelis along with their committee warmly invite all to an eveningof good food, memorable music and much dancing.November also heralds that it is time for elections to the Parish Council and the Audit Committee, so if you have aninterest in seeking office, please e-mail Stephanie (secretary@stsophia.org). Your information will be forwarded to theElection Committee Chairperson who will contact you. Also, please save the date - Sunday, November 18 - for ourFall General Assembly. To all those named Gerasimos, Demetrios and Demetra, “Cronia Polla” for your nameday as we celebrate the FeastDays of St. Gerasimos and St. Demetrios in October. In Christ’s Service and Love,Loula B. October 2012 Page 17Silence is GoldenBy Anthony DemetriouEach and every time I attend services at Saint Sophia Cathedral, I am reminded of a day over 80 yearsago when the lesson of “silence in Church” was etched into my memory. In the company of our parents, my brother Jim and I frequently attended services at the Church of theAnnunciation on San Julian Street. On this particular Sunday, attendance was low. Our mother andfather stayed near the middle of the church and directed us boys to one of the empty front pews of thechurch. No one else was around us. As the service progressed with chanting by the priest and chanters,my brother and I engaged in what we thought was some playful nudging one to the other. As thisnudging progressed, it appeared our father saw our activity and quietly came to a place just behindwhere my brother and I were seated. Without one word of warning from him, we each received onegreat “Greek style” cuff across the cheek.. one right and one left.. right in the middle of the service!Nothing was said and no sound came from me or my brother. We were shocked and ashamed. From that day forward, it is a lesson that has stayed with me, and it troubles me when I see adultsengage in conversation during church services. One of the main reasons most of us attend service is to hear the Word of the Lord. There is plenty of timeto socialize after Liturgy.Church of the Annunciation, San Julian Street, Los AngelesDo not be conformed to this world.. but let God transform you by the renewal of your mind. Then you will be able to know the will of God.. what is good and acceptable and perfect.Romans 12:2

Page 18October 2012The Gold Mineby Father Allan BoydMany years ago, a certain King put on a disguise and secretly traveledthroughout His boundless Kingdom. As he came upon one village in an areathat had suffered a catastrophic drought, He discovered that the unfortunatepeople who lived there were in such deep poverty, that their very lives wereat stake. As He came across a young mother in this village to ask her whathad happened, she broke into tears. When the local river dried up thatflowed through the area, feeding the area farms and powering her and herhusband’s mill, they had completely lost their means of support. The mill nolonger worked and it really didn’t matter, because there were no longer anygrain harvests coming in to be crushed into flour. They had run out of food tofeed their children. Every day was a day closer to starvation and they felttrapped there. The King continued His investigation and found that everywhere around this village the stories were the same; thepeople were suffering to the point of starvation. He felt great compassion on his subjects and decided to do somethingabout it immediately. He called all of them together, revealed His real identity as their King and promised torescue them from their terrible plight if they would only follow Him to where He had a wonderful surprise for them.Much further away in His Kingdom, outside of the drought-stricken area, a gold vein had recently been discoveredthat was so large, it promised untold wealth for His Kingdom. Wanting to use this wealth to help the people in HisKingdom, he put together a unique plan. The King sent for his troops, who came to help pack up this village ofpeople and lead them to the area of the gold mine. There, He helped them build new homes and then showedthem the actual gold mine. He told them that He would put them in charge of the gold mine, if they would but fulfillone promise for Him. They had to agree to mine the gold below, to go down and dig, as long as they used it, notonly to help their own families, but out of gratitude to the King for His great mercy, to use the gold to help thekingdom around them as well. He told them that they were only limited by their imaginations in what they couldaccomplish with that gold.Of course that little village happily accepted their new charge. They gladlywent down and began digging. Out of gratitude for the great mercy that wasshown to them, entire families went down to dig, excited to know that not onlywere they improving each other’s lot, but also the lives of so many others in theKingdom who might have been struggling like they had. They used the gold tobring their kids the best education. They used this education to continuallycome up with better ways to improve the kingdom. They built roads. They builtbridges. They dug wells. They built hospitals. They worked so joyfully and sohard at fulfilling the King’s wishes, that everywhere around them the Kingdomflourished more and more from the fruit of their gratitude. They were so excited about this great gift that they decided to build a museumover the top of that gold mine. It wasmeant to commemorate and to honor this great thing that the King haddone, putting them in charge of the kingdom. It was a grand and wonderfulgold-gilt museum…cathedral-like in its magnificence. Many came tovisit the museum…so many that in fact, they began pulling people off fromthe digging below so that they could stay up top and help manage theday to day tours and the food courts and the upkeep of this greatinstitution. After a while, many who dug in the mines below began toresent those up above who worked in the museum because they justweren’t working as hard as the diggers. Everybody wanted a job up top inthe museum and almost nobody wanted to go down into the mine below. They had become lazy. People began to tell each other that there reallywasn’t any gold below, so that eventually, most doubted it. In time, no one even bothered to actually go downbelow to investigate for themselves. Children began to regard the tale of this merciful King who rescued the starvingvillage as just that…an old folk story that probably wasn’t even true. Little by little, the people began to regard themuseum as nothing more than a relic of an old-fashioned past that had no relevance to their lives today. Theybegan to focus their attention on other things, on their own entertainment, on whiling away the hours in selfishpursuits. Gold was no longer being used to help make the Kingdom a better place…and the Kingdom stoppedflourishing until eventually the people of that village began to find themselves steeped in poverty once again.

October 2012 Page 19And the saddest thing about this story is that right underneath them, as they languished in poverty, therecontinued to be a gold mine with a vein so large that, even after all those years of mining, its potential was STILLquite unlimited. How would you imagine that King felt when He heard that the people he had put in charge of His gold mine wereno longer doing as He asked…no longer doing as they promised…no longer digging for the gold…no longer using itto help His Kingdom? What would you think about their gratitude towards His great gift? What about the dishonorthese people’s digression into unnecessary poverty gives to their hardworking forefathers? What do these peopledeserve for not continuing to allow their King’s mercy to transform their lives and the lives of other people throughoutHis Kingdom? What would you do to these people if YOU were their King? Most of you know by now that I didn’t grow up in the Orthodox Faith. In many ways, I grew up in what I consider tobe an impoverished Christian tradition. Because of the inconsistencies in a poorly thought out theology and its lackof connection to the teachings of the early Church Fathers and because of its rejection of any scripture that didn’tfit that denomination’s agenda, I grew up always feeling spiritually starved. Oh sure we had little bits and pieces, little flecks of real spiritual gold here and there to string us along, but a greater part of what we had was fool’s gold.It looked nice and shiny, but when it came down to what mattered in life, it was quite shallow and problematic inits ability to transform. I wasn’t satisfied with that fool’s gold, so I searched and searched for something that heldtogether with more spiritual integrity. In fact, I spent years searching throughout several various Christian traditionsfor real spiritual gold. Of course, I’d find a nice little nugget of real spiritual gold here or there, but it alwaysconflicted with a greater portion of other poorly thought out theologies of fool’s gold, and the real pieces were toofew and far between to keep me fed for long.Eventually, I came upon the Orthodox Christian Faith. I began digging, spending years fervently testing the bits andpieces I found. I tried them under fire. I weighed them carefully. Most importantly, I tested their worth in the world. What I eventually discovered is that, here, in the Tradition passed down to us from the Apostles and from theChurch Fathers through the sacramental life of the Church and a more thorough study of the scriptures and theways that this Faith (if it is dug for…and used) can transform the world. I found that deep underneath us is not onlyspiritual gold, but the mother lode of gold veins, so huge, so rich, that we could ALL mine feverishly for the rest ofour lives, spending it lavishly on helping all those around us, and we wouldn’t even begin to put a dent in using upthis amazing resource. And yet, do you know what else I found above this mother lode vein of spiritual gold? There are many people, whohad long ago been given charge of that gold vein by their King, but who had since built a grand museum over thetop of it. For many years now they had stopped digging, no longer believing that there was anything of anyrelevance for their lives…that it was just a representation of quaint old folk-stories about a King and His rescue of agroup of people in poverty that probably never really existed in the first place.Oh sure, you would always find people who would show up for baptisms and weddings and funerals, and Greekdances and festivals because those were important family times and that’s just what our families do. But who is leftto go down into the mine to actually work, to dig for that spiritual gold out of gratitude for the King to use it to makeHis Kingdom better? Oh sure, we recite, “Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven…” butthose are just words from that nice little folk story our family has always come here to perform, we don’t really meanthose words, because in our laziness, we have come to believe that there isn’t really any spiritual gold downthere…and by our lives, spent in doing everything BUT digging, we have convinced our children of the same…it’snot worth digging for…it’s all just a nice myth. All the while, the world around us is in spiritual poverty and wehaven’t even begun to tap that unlimited mother lode vein. What will our King say about OUR gratitude? What willHe say about our grand museum? What will he say about what we’ve done to our children? What will He thinkabout our empty celebrations of baptisms and weddings and funerals and dances and festivals, when the worldaround us is crumbling and we’ve done nothing to help it with such amazing resources at our fingertips? Can ourforefathers even say that our failure to dig brings any honor to their wonderful efforts?A few weekends ago, I returned from two weeks away at St Sophia Camp, where I got to spend time with many ofour children and many of the children from our surrounding parishes. I heard confessions for many of them. Folks,we’ve got good kids here, thank God. But, can each of us honestly say that we've been a good example to ourchildren of what it means to dig into our Faith for this amazing resource of spiritual gold? Can we legitimately saythat we consistently make the time to dig in front of them? Can we accurately say that we've helped to make digginginto our Faith a consistent part of their lives? Can we honorably say that there is no need for us to change ourdirection from the one we've been heading in? When we at camp asked kids of all ages questions about our Faith, many of them became quite intimidated, saying that it wasn’t fair we were asking them questions about their faith, because their parents hardly ever took them to Church. When I asked groups of counselors (18-25 year olds)

Page 20October 2012questions about the most basic aspects of our Faith, they most often clammed up, because they didn’t have thefoggiest Idea about the roots of our faith. On the rare occasion when they could muster-up any answers, often times it was something from Protestant orRoman Catholic teaching that actually ran contrary to what we believe. In fact, some of what we heard from themwere quite dangerous theologies. When I offered the counselors Christ’s and our scriptures’ definition for what itmeans to be Christian, several of them defiantly remarked to me that this was only my opinion of what it means tobe a Christian. I had to explain to them that there has developed a modern logical fallacy that because everyoneis entitled to their own opinion, then also everyone must be entitled to their own facts. Brothers and sisters in Christ…everyone is NOT entitled to their own facts. Unlike opinions, facts are facts, they are absolute…and the fact is, our King, the Lord Jesus Christ, has NOTput us in charge of a museum, but has asked us to mine for this spiritualgold that He’s placed us in charge of and to use it to help, not only ourown families, but to also help the world around us.What will our King do with us? Will He take this gold mine away from us andgive it to some other people who can show more gratitude?…Will he give itto those who have such gratitude for His great mercy that they will actuallygo down and dig?…Will He give it to a people who will use its resources tobuild in-roads and bridges between the societies around them, reconcilingthem to one another and to God?… Will He give it to a people who will useits resources to dig wells, offering living water to the many around themwho are dying from the spiritual drought?…Will He give it to a people who will use its resources to build hospitals, sothat those around us who are spiritually injured and diseased can find comfort and healing?…Will He give it to apeople who will work so joyfully and so hard at fulfilling the King’s wishes, that everywhere around them the Kingdombegins to once again flourish from the fruit of their gratitude. Will our King take this gold mine from us and give it tothese other people? He’s already done that very thing (Matthew 3:7-10) before! Will He do it again? Finally, my brothers and sisters in Christ, please meditate for a moment on the Good News associated within theabove parable. In a few of the prayers of the Church we acknowledge God’s great mercy by saying, “O Lord, youdo not desire the destruction of anyone, but rather You offer us repentance (the opportunity to correct ourdirection) as the means for our salvation.” God is begging for our repentance…if only we would listen to Him. TheDidachi, one of the most ancient documents handed down to us from the earliest disciples of Christ says that thereare only two roads to take…the way of life…or the way that leads to destruction and death. The good news is thatwe can choose in this very moment to turn in that direction of LIFE, in the direction of digging for that spiritual goldand offering the fruit of it for the sake of the world. And although there are always natural consequences for thetimes that we have chosen the way of destruction unto death (when we’ve failed to go down into the mine to digfor the sake of our families and for the world), at the same time, our God is so very merciful and richly rewards ourefforts to bear the fruit of His love.So for the sake of God’s great love for yourself, for your family and for theworld around you, in great gratitude for what our King has given you, graba shovel and a pick and take a ride down into the depths of our Faith, thisspiritual mother lode gold vein, and start digging and start spending itlavishly on the folks around you. How do we dig? Well, number one, westart by making sure that we’re here every Sunday with our children, participatingin the Sacramental life of the Church and making sure they’re inSunday School every Sunday. (And show up for Church on time. I oftennotice that as the Doxology is being sung that there are only about 70people there…out of a parish who serves 1200 families. Is that the kind ofconsciousness you show at your job? Is that the consciousness you reallywant to show to our King who in His great mercy has asked us to simplycome and dig for the sake of His Kingdom? Come on folks…you’re better than that!) We DIG by picking up booksabout our Faith and the scriptures and conspicuously studying about the teachings of Jesus Christ and of the ChurchFathers in front of our children. We DIG by involving ourselves in the adult Christian education classes that areoffered at Saint Sophia. We DIG by talking about what we’ve been learning in front of our kids, when we wake up inthe morning, when we’re driving them around town, as we eat our meals together, when we put them to bed, whenwe’re doing any activity with them, and as we lavishly offer to the world from what we’ve learned, through gooddeeds and acts of love. In this way, we can look each other in the eye and say with a fair amount of authenticity…Christ is in our midst! May God bless your efforts to dig!!!
