The documentary highlights the first generation<strong>Greek</strong> Americans. This film is narrated andhosted by Academy Award Winner OlympiaDukakis."The Promise of Tomorrow‖ is part 2 of the awardwinningseries, ―The <strong>Greek</strong>s of Southern CaliforniaThrough the Century.‖ It is a universal story of thefirst generation‘s <strong>Greek</strong> American experience, withcourageous stories from those who served bravelyduring wartime and heartwarming stories beingraised <strong>Greek</strong> at home while struggling to be Americanoutside the home. Opportunities for successare endless and achievements resonate with thefirst generation as they become part of America‘shistory.The question of identity permeates throughouttheir adult life: "We are not just <strong>Greek</strong>s; we are notjust Americans, but we are a new breed – <strong>Greek</strong>Americans!"FR. BAKAS ON A JOURNEY OF FAITH:EAST AND WESTOur Dean, Fr. John Bakas has been invited to joinMetropolitan Gerasimo of San Francisco, MetropolitanNikitas, Roman Catholic Archbishop GeorgeNiederauer of San Francisco accompanied bythree of his auxiliary bishops and a small delegationof <strong>Orthodox</strong> and Roman Catholic lay people onwhat has been called a ―Journey of Faith: East andWest‖. The journey began on Sunday, November21 and goes through December 2 nd . It is a goodwilljourney which will include a visit with Pope BenedictXVI at the Vatican in Rome, a visit in Athens withArchbishop Ieronymos of Athens and all Greece,and a visit with our Patriarch Bartholomew in Constantinople.The journey is intended to help promoteimproved relations between the western andeastern churches. The honor of being included inthis esteemed group was bestowed upon Fr. Bakasfor his work in improving ecumenical relationsamongst churches in Los Angeles. It is also an acknowledgementof <strong>Saint</strong> <strong>Sophia</strong> <strong>Cathedral</strong>‘s role asa leader among churches in the western part of ournation.COMMUNITY NEWS<strong>Greek</strong> Obituary Service is now availablefor <strong>Saint</strong> <strong>Sophia</strong> <strong>Cathedral</strong>We are working with a service called <strong>Greek</strong> Obituary.This service will add a valuable optional servicefor <strong>Cathedral</strong> members and friends. Too oftenwhen a loved one passes, we may not have aneasy and straight-forward method to contacteveryone in the community about Trisagion andfuneral services. Traditional newspapers can costover $600 for a death notice with a photograph.Fortunately, <strong>Greek</strong> Obituary‘s fee is much less thanpublishing a notice in the newspaper. For only $50,patrons can include a photo and a much longerbiography. Like large national obituary services,visitors have the option of signing a complimentaryonline guest book. One of the major improvementsover the large national services is that <strong>Greek</strong> Obituary‘sobituary list and guest books are free to accessand read. They will not expire after a year orrequire you to pay for access to an obituary. This isnot only a wonderful remembrance for our community,but a portion of the proceeds will benefit<strong>Saint</strong> <strong>Sophia</strong> <strong>Cathedral</strong>. Standard obituaries canhave one (1) page of obituary text, about 350-400words, and one photo for their tribute. If a moreextravagant obituary with multiple photos or moretext is desired, enhanced obituaries are also available.Obituary text should be sent either by standarde-mail, or as a Word/WordPerfect attachmentto greekobituary@gmail.com. Enhancedobituaries can also have an optional backgroundimage as a tribute, including the cross and militarybranch logos.<strong>Greek</strong> Obituary is managed by one of our <strong>Cathedral</strong>members, Dean Tripodes. After working withseveral churches, AHEPA chapters, and thenational Pan-Icarian Brotherhood, it was determinedthere was a need for reasonable cost <strong>Greek</strong>obituaries. <strong>Greek</strong> Obituary is integrated into our<strong>Cathedral</strong> website, and includes obituaries andtributes from several communities throughout theUnited States. <strong>Greek</strong> Obituary welcomes all Philhellenestoo, non-<strong>Greek</strong>s (including spouses) who arefamily members and friends of the <strong>Greek</strong> community.Most importantly, the service welcomes everyonewho has been a part of the <strong>Greek</strong> <strong>Orthodox</strong>Church.Please go online to our <strong>Cathedral</strong> website atstsophia.org and click on the Events menu tab,and then on Obituaries.
