H. Davies, his overwhelming
love for nature is apparent in his
beautiful poem "Leisure" where
he laments the advent of the
Industrial Age, which was
instrumental in taking away the
simple pleasures of life – time to
appreciate Nature – in effect,
denying all that defined
happiness for him:
WHAT is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and
stare
No time to stand beneath the
boughs,
And stare as long as sheep and
cows:

And watch her feet, how they can
dance:

So, is there a way to measure
happiness According to the
Dalai Lama, it’s the result of
more than 10,000 days of intense
spiritual meditation. For the
average individual, that is
something impossible to achieve.
But is that something that we
should all strive for I, for one,
don't think so. In Shakespeare's
"King Richard II", a play based
on English history, old John of
Gaunt lovingly likens his native
England to "This precious stone
set in the silver sea". Happiness
should be exactly so. You cannot
appreciate happiness ("This
precious stone") unless you
realize what the lack of it ("the
silver sea") is like. So, dear
friend, by all means strive for
happiness to the best of your
abilities. But do not let yourself
be bogged down if, from time to
time, you do hit a bad patch.
Cheer up!
Happiness is just around the
corner!
