Update on Nanofillers in Nanocomposites
Authors
Akbar K. Haghi
Gennady Zaikov
Polymer nanocomposites continue to receive wide-spread acclaim for their potential to improve composite materials beyond
conventional macroscale fillers. Nanofillers in nanocomposites are used in a broad range of applications as a result of its ease
of processing, low price and a combination of advantageous properties. In the last decade, nanofiller particles have prompted
much attention and become a developing field in nanocomposites.
The main objective of this book is to show how a particle size at nano scale offers an enormous amount of surface area and a
great dispersion behavior. Detailed information provided to show that the use of nanofillers is very promising so as to improve
the physical properties more effectively than conventional type of fillers. This book provides up-to-date information on recent
advances in various aspects of modern composites reinforced by nanofillers, including their fabrication and engineering
properties. The change in such properties can be related to the subsequent conformational changes, but there is a big
controversy for the conformational behavior of polymer chains when perturbed by nanoparticles.
To accomplish these tasks, this book focuses on the behavior of nanoparticles in both morphology control and reinforcement.
Applications of Polymers in Drug Delivery
During the past 20 years, advances in drug formulations and innovative routes of administration have been made in order to
maximize therapeutic benefits of pharmacotherapy along with non-invasive routes for drug administrations for improved patient
convenience. Polymers are integral part of conventional drug delivery in solid orals, in liquids, suspensions and emulsions, and
as film coatings for various advantages i.e. modifying release characteristics of drug, flow property, stability and taste masking.
Advances in polymer science have led to the development of several novel drug-delivery systems which made alternate routes of
drug delivery possible apart from its traditional applications in drug delivery.
The Handbook will explore different polymers and their applications in various routes for drug delivery including buccal, gastric,
intestinal, payer’s patch, colon, parenteral, rectal, vaginal, nasal, pulmonary, ocular and otic applications. The handbook aims to
provide an overview of the applications of polymers in drug delivery. Readers will be directed where necessary to appropriate
textbooks and specialised reviews.
Pulp Production and Processing
Cellulose represents the most widely spread organic polymer found in nature and it was used for a long time as a raw material
for paper, textiles, film and flexible packing material. Due to its accessibility in huge amounts by photosynthesis process as a
renewable material, cellulose is considered at present as a chance to answer to many problems connected with sustainable
development. This explains the great scientific interest for this compound along with a lot of preoccupations to systematize the
accumulated information in reviews and books. This book will present the aspects of cellulose obtaining in the correleation with
its integration in a new concept of biorefining.
Thus usual technological steps of pulp manufacture (pulping, bleaching) will be continued with chemistry charactersitics of by
-products and their utilization, fiber characterization for paper obtaining, cellulose derivatives and special products resulted
in cellulose processing (beads and microspheres, micro-and nano-structures, fibers production, their antibacterial properties,
optical functional film, and hydrogen).
