A Guide to Successful Rapid Manufacturing
Rapid Manufacturing is seen as one of the most important emerging technologies that will drive the future manufacturing
economy. Approximately 30% of the Rapid Manufacturing systems are installed in Europe, and the revenues generated by RM
products and services have almost doubled in the period 2004-2009 to reach almost 1 M€. This makes RM products and services
an already important, and with clear potential, part of the EU industry.
The objective of the KTRM EU project is to contribute to a coherent training program that will allow the participants to improve
the methodology and system for Rapid Manufacturing that implies design, development and manufacturing of products in
aluminium, titanium, steel, steel and polymers on RM technologies. KTRM will develop an elearning platform and training
materials for those working in the Manufacturing industry on Rapid Manufacturing methods. The project will use a ‘blended
learning’ approach, offering interactive online modules and supporting ‘hard-copy’ resources. The course will have four entry
points: processes, materials, design and business models.
A consortium has been drawn together of European RTOs and companies bringing together a wealth of expertise and resources
in Rapid Manfacturing. The overall impact of KTRM is to enable SME to be able to initiate the implantation and standardisation of
the process development and to know the abilities, advantages and limitations of the designed Rapid Manufacturing methodology.
Food Industry and Packaging Materials - Performance-oriented
Guidelines for Users
The first objective of this book is to provide detailed and comprehensible information about Quality Control (QC) in the industry.
Different viewpoints are explained in relation to food companies, packaging producers and technical experts, including regulatory
aspects. One of the most important steps is the comprehension of QC failures in relation to the ‘food product’ (food/packaging).
The second objective is to provide the reader with a detailed selection of proposals about new testing methods. On the basis of
regulatory obligations in the EU about the technological suitability of food packaging materials, a list of ‘performance-oriented’
guidelines is proposed. Food sectors are mentioned in relation to products, related packaging materials, known failures and
existing quality control procedures.
This volume is intended to be a practical guide on food packaging and QC methods and a quick reference to food operators, official
safety inspectors, public health institutions, Certification bodies, students and researchers from the academia and the industry.
Update on Polymers for Pulmonary Drug Delivery
Authors
Hugh D.C. Smyth
Jason McConville
Ibrahim El-Sherbiny
Pulmonary drug delivery has been a rapidly expanding field, moving from the traditional propellant based metered dose inhaler
delivery of small asthma drugs, to a broader landscape of new devices and novel drugs for local and systemic delivery. The field
has greatly expanded yet the tools for pulmonary drug delivery systems have not kept pace with the potential applications. One of
the key developments has been the use of polymers to achieve better control of pulmonary drug delivery. This has the potential to
expand the toolbox available for researchers in the field to deliver their new chemical entities successfully to the lung.
This book reviews the use of polymers in pulmonary drug delivery, encompassing polymers from their use in devices and
packaging, in addition to their use as excipients in formulations delivered to the airways. The book is arranged by application and
extensively reviews the technical and patent literature.
This is the first volume totally dedicated to polymers in pulmonary drug delivery and should be the resource of choice for those
in the field, especially managers in the pharma/biotech industry. Naturally, the text will be of great interest to academics and
graduate students. Finally, regulatory affiliated scientists will also find this resource invaluable.
