Blowing Agents & Foaming Processes 2012
Compiled by
Smithers Rapra
These proceedings contain all the presentations from this conference which is now in its fourteenth consecutive year. As the only
conference tailored to the specific needs of the polymeric foam industry, this event provided a forum for speakers to showcase
new materials and processing technologies that will improve current application performance and benefit from improving or
replacing existing material and process selections.
As raw material costs still continue to pose a significant economic challenge to manufacturers in high volume markets, end-users
are increasingly sourcing novel materials that represent cost-effective alternatives to traditional choices. This conference was
an opportunity for companies using or considering using expansion processes. For many, foamed substrates can offer the answer
to these ever spiralling expenses as blowing agents and blowing gases are excellent “fillers” and have the dual benefits of saving
material and reducing weight (which in turn reduces transportation costs).
Today there are numerous solutions on offer - new methods, resins, technology, processes and additives and it seems that demand
for higher performance and lower costs is set to once again drive technical developments in polymeric foams.
Blowing Agents and Foaming Processes 2011
iSmithers’ Blowing Agents & Foaming Processes conference returned for the thirteenth consecutive year to highlight the
academic and commercial developments in current and new polymeric foam applications.
As the only conference to be tailored to the specific needs of the polymeric foam industry, this was a not-to-be-missed opportunity
to hear the latest thinking and best practice in new materials selection and processing technologies.
These proceedings cover all the presentations from the conference, bringing you up-to-date on how to find cost-effective
alternatives to traditional choices by discussing the numerous solutions on offer - including new materials, resins, technology,
processes and additives.
Design of Extrusion Forming Tools
Edited by
Olga Carneiro
Joao Miguel Nobrega
The design of extrusion forming tools (dies and calibrators) is a difficult task usually performed by the employment of
experimental trial-and-error procedures, which can hinder the performance and cost of the tools, may increase the time to market
of new extruded products and limit their complexity.
The main objective of this book is to provide detailed information on the design of extrusion forming tools. It describes the main
problems to be faced when designing dies and calibrators, the most relevant polymer properties to be considered in the design
process, the specific problems related to several types of conventional extrusion dies, and recent developments on the design of
special dies and process modeling. It will be an updated and uncommon book on the subject, where each chapter is prepared
by internationally recognized experts. Having in mind its nature, it is expected to become a useful reference book for higher
education students (both undergraduate and graduate ones), teachers, researchers and engineers active in the extrusion industry.
