Electrospinning for Advanced Biomedical Applications and
Therapies
Edited by
Nuno M. Neves
The main focus of this book is on the development of electrospun membranes for advanced biomedical technologies including
tissue engineering and drug delivery devices.
Serving as a reference book for the beginner this book also provides an in-depth analysis of the challenges to be overcome
in the future. Each section of the book covers not only the developments in the various fields of application of the electrospun
meshes, but also the advances required for the successful development of new and high-end biomedical applications.
Important areas tackled include:
–Biomedical applications of the technology
–Specific aspects of equipments and materials
–Surface characterization and functionalization
–In vitro testing with electrospun meshes.
In all of these areas the main achievements, challenges ahead and expert opinions are given, making this book highly unusual in
the level of detail covered.
Extractables and Leachables for Pharmaceutical Products 2011
Compiled by
Smithers Rapra
The examination of extractables and leachables from materials in contact with a drug product or the patient is growing in
importance due to increased regulatory scrutiny from organisations such as the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) and the
European Medicines Agency (EMEA). Regulators are concerned with the interaction of various drug delivery devices, such as
metered dose and dry powder inhalers (MDI and DPI) and now parenterals and ophthalmics are of increasing interest, as well as
pharmaceutical process equipment.
Extractables and leachables assessment of all materials and especially from elastomeric and plastic components forms an
integral part of the submission for approval of a new drug system or medical device. It is therefore essential that any company
involved in the supply chain - from raw material suppliers, processors, convertors to the pharmaceutical supplier - is fully aware
of the latest developments and best practice in generating test results and data to support successful regulatory submissions to
both the FDA and EMEA.
These proceedings cover all the presentations from this conference which brought together the pharmaceutical supply chain to
discuss the latest research in minimising the risks associated with extractables and leachables.
