MSc in <strong>Leadership</strong> in Health Pr<strong>of</strong>essions Education<br />

combination <strong>of</strong> classroom and web-based instruction.<br />

Duration: Two Years Part-time<br />

Flexibility & Progression: Modules can be taken as<br />

stand alone (10 ECTS) and at your own pace. You can<br />

progress onto certificate, postgraduate diploma or MSc<br />

within two-five years <strong>of</strong> registration.<br />

Royal College <strong>of</strong> Surgeons in <strong>Ireland</strong><br />

Fees: The cost <strong>of</strong> MSc programme per year is<br />

€6,120 (EU) and €12,195 (Non-EU).<br />

The Programme<br />

This programme is designed to help you develop as an<br />

effective teacher, mentor, supervisor and educational leader.<br />

Particular areas <strong>of</strong> focus include how you use leadership<br />

capabilities in curriculum design, educational strategies,<br />

assessment <strong>of</strong> learning, clinical supervision, educational<br />

research and programme evaluation through pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

application and scholarship.<br />

This programme is designed for all healthcare pr<strong>of</strong>essionals<br />

who wish to demonstrate leadership in teaching and learning.<br />

If you are already working as an educator or if teaching is part<br />

<strong>of</strong> your day–to–day job this programme will support you and<br />

develop you as a leader in education.<br />

Year 1<br />

Semester 1 (September – December)<br />

Module 1: Planning Education Programmes (10 ECTS)<br />

Here you will explore the principles <strong>of</strong> curriculum design<br />

including curriculum alignment and outcome based education.<br />

You will focus on leadership and developing a global<br />

perspective on curriculum design.<br />

Module 2: Teaching & Learning Methods (10 ECTS)<br />

You will examine instructional methods in the education <strong>of</strong><br />

health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. You will experience problem-based and<br />

adult learning. Taking a leadership role in effective teaching<br />

for a variety <strong>of</strong> settings will be evaluated in a safe and<br />

supportive environment and assessed using microteaching.<br />

Module 3: Supervising Healthcare Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals<br />

(10 ECTS)<br />

This module explores supervision and learning in clinical<br />

settings and the stages involved in moving from novice to<br />

expert. You will explore the role <strong>of</strong> the supervisor/mentor as<br />

a leader in initiating evidence based models <strong>of</strong> supervising.<br />

Semester 2 (January – April)<br />

Module 4: Learner Assessment in Health Care<br />

(10 ECTS)<br />

Here the critical role <strong>of</strong> assessment in “driving learning” in<br />

health pr<strong>of</strong>essions education will be examined. You will explore<br />

the principles and practice <strong>of</strong> assessment, and examine item<br />

writing, standard setting, OSCEs and blueprinting.<br />

Module 5: <strong>Leadership</strong> in Health Pr<strong>of</strong>essions Education<br />

(10 ECTS)<br />

Here you will evaluate your role <strong>of</strong> educator as leader. The<br />

various leadership strategies and governance necessary to<br />

support and sustain curriculum development in a health<br />

education setting will be examined. You will examine the<br />

characteristics associated with successful curricular change,<br />

internal networking, resource allocation and the relationship<br />

with the environment.<br />

Module 6: Research & Evaluation (10 ECTS)<br />

You will evaluate the mechanisms required for effective<br />

programme evaluation that monitor the implementation <strong>of</strong> the<br />

curriculum, track student progress and ensure that concerns<br />

are identified early and addressed properly. You will critically<br />

appraise research and evaluation articles from education and<br />

design a project proposal on a relevant education topic which<br />

can be carried out in your organisations.<br />

Year 2<br />

Semester 3 & 4 (September – May)<br />

Please refer to MSc in Healthcare Management on page 5 for<br />

further information on Semester 3 & 4: Action Learning Sets<br />

& Change Management Project. The project will focus on<br />

improvement in a teaching/learning aspect <strong>of</strong> your work.<br />

Assessment<br />

Case studies, individual and group assignments,<br />

microteaching, presentations, peer assessment, reports,<br />

posters, reflections and change management project. The<br />

assessments have a targeted application to participants<br />

existing working environments.<br />
