MSc in Leadership in Health Professions Education

Delivery method: Blended learning using a
combination of classroom and web-based instruction.

Flexibility & Progression: Modules can be taken as
stand alone (10 ECTS) and at your own pace. You can
progress onto certificate, postgraduate diploma or MSc
within two-five years of registration.

Fees: The cost of MSc programme per year is
€6,120 (EU) and €12,195 (Non-EU).
The Programme
This programme is designed to help you develop as an
effective teacher, mentor, supervisor and educational leader.
Particular areas of focus include how you use leadership
capabilities in curriculum design, educational strategies,
assessment of learning, clinical supervision, educational
research and programme evaluation through professional
application and scholarship.

who wish to demonstrate leadership in teaching and learning.
If you are already working as an educator or if teaching is part
of your day–to–day job this programme will support you and
develop you as a leader in education.
Year 1
Semester 1 (September – December)
Module 1: Planning Education Programmes (10 ECTS)
Here you will explore the principles of curriculum design
including curriculum alignment and outcome based education.
You will focus on leadership and developing a global
perspective on curriculum design.
Module 2: Teaching & Learning Methods (10 ECTS)
You will examine instructional methods in the education of
health professionals. You will experience problem-based and
adult learning. Taking a leadership role in effective teaching
for a variety of settings will be evaluated in a safe and
supportive environment and assessed using microteaching.
Module 3: Supervising Healthcare Professionals
(10 ECTS)
This module explores supervision and learning in clinical
settings and the stages involved in moving from novice to
expert. You will explore the role of the supervisor/mentor as
a leader in initiating evidence based models of supervising.
Semester 2 (January – April)
Module 4: Learner Assessment in Health Care
(10 ECTS)
Here the critical role of assessment in “driving learning” in
health professions education will be examined. You will explore
the principles and practice of assessment, and examine item
writing, standard setting, OSCEs and blueprinting.
Module 5: Leadership in Health Professions Education
(10 ECTS)
Here you will evaluate your role of educator as leader. The
various leadership strategies and governance necessary to
support and sustain curriculum development in a health
education setting will be examined. You will examine the
characteristics associated with successful curricular change,
internal networking, resource allocation and the relationship
with the environment.
Module 6: Research & Evaluation (10 ECTS)
You will evaluate the mechanisms required for effective
programme evaluation that monitor the implementation of the
curriculum, track student progress and ensure that concerns
are identified early and addressed properly. You will critically
appraise research and evaluation articles from education and
design a project proposal on a relevant education topic which
can be carried out in your organisations.
Year 2
Semester 3 & 4 (September – May)
Please refer to MSc in Healthcare Management on page 5 for
further information on Semester 3 & 4: Action Learning Sets
& Change Management Project. The project will focus on
improvement in a teaching/learning aspect of your work.
Assessment
Case studies, individual and group assignments,
microteaching, presentations, peer assessment, reports,
posters, reflections and change management project. The
assessments have a targeted application to participants
existing working environments.
