The Programme This professional certificate will provide you with the focused healthcare quality, risk & patient safety skills and knowledge required to perform effectively in a position of leadership and management of healthcare quality and safety. Is This Programme for You This professional certificate is designed for doctors, dentists, community pharmacists, managers, nurses, allied health professionals and administrators. Personnel in allied health businesses such as medical supplies/equipment and pharmaceuticals will also find the professional certificate relevant. Module 1: Evaluation, Measurement & Research (10 ECTS) Modern health services require a complex range of information to support evidence-based practice. In this module, you will learn how to collect, analyse, interpret and present valid and reliable data as a foundation for evidence based practice. Module 2: Operations Management & Quality (10 ECTS) This module provides an understanding of the nature of service provision. It explores how operation management tools can be used to improve patient care through process redesign. Particular emphasis is placed on quality issues, on assessing capacity and demand and on using control charts to understand and control performance. Module 3: Quality & Risk Management (10 ECTS) Quality maintenance and improvement is everybody’s responsibility and is particularly important in healthcare given the imperative of maximising patient safety. Here you will explore the concepts of quality, safety and risk and examine current best-practice in a variety of healthcare contexts. You can progress onto certificate, diploma or MSc within two-five years of registration. Accreditation: National University of Ireland and Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland NFQ Status: Level 9 (Major Award) CPD Credits: 192 ECTS Credits: 90 Commences: September/October 2013 Fees: The cost of MSc programme per year is €6,120 (EU) and €12,195 (Non-EU) & €200 to cover psychometric assessments. Year 1 Semester 1 (September – December) Module 1: Understanding & Managing Yourself (10 ECTS) Self-insight is the key to effective leadership. In this module, you will be introduced to the psychology of leadership and leadership development. You will explore a range of leadership paradigms and learn to understand the central role of self development. You will undertake a number of psychometric assessments to assist you start your personal exploration of leadership practice. Module 2: Leading & Managing Others (10 ECTS) Leading, influencing and managing individuals and teams is a key capability required of professionals. Here you will explore the psychology of one-to-one and team leadership and learn to understand the complex communication skills involved. You will also look at how to manage dysfunctional teams, how to handle conflict and how to maximise motivation. You will undertake a number of psychometric assessments to assist your understanding of your approach to teamwork, motivation, communication and conflict. Module 3: Leading Change (10 ECTS) This module introduces the major models of change management and explores their application in practice. You will learn to lead change using a variety of change management tools, understand the impact of culture on change, develop your negotiation skills and determine the factors that are most important in sustaining change and developing learning organisations. Semester 2 (January – April/May) Module 4: Leading Quality Improvement (10 ECTS) This module focuses on leadership in the context of maximising quality and safety and minimising risk in organisations. You will explore the concepts of governance, quality, standards, safety & risk and examine current best practice in a variety of contexts. You will learn about tools such as the Productive Series, Six Sigma Process, Lean Process Improvement, Process Mapping and Prince2 Project Management. Module 5: Leading Your Service (10ECTS) Successful organisations have a clear vision and mission, know their core values and have a strategic plan that informs the allocation of resources and the articulation and measurement of outcomes. This module focuses on the broader systems of the organisation and explores the models and tools essential for strategic planning and implementation. The relationships between leadership and strategic planning are explored and particular emphasis is placed on the role of financial factors and accounting methods in leading an organisation and providing a service. Module 6: Leadership and Management Skills for Future Professionals (10 ECTS) This module will further develop your capacity to plan your own and your Unit’s development in an organised manner using a variety of frameworks. You will learn about workforce planning and staff engagement and how to optimise organisational capital. The module will also consider the major emerging trends in society that will influence the nature of leadership over the coming decades and help you elaborate your response in order to maximise your leadership effectiveness into the future. Year 2 Semester 3 & 4 (September – May) Please refer to MSc in Healthcare Management on page 5 for further information on Semester 3 & 4: Action Learning Sets & Change Management Project.
