Community Engagement
The Institute of Leadership is actively involved in a number of
Community Engagement initiatives which support healthcare
professionals in developing countries. This includes the RCSI
Council of Surgeons in East, Central and Southern Africa
(COSECSA) programme which aims to improve the standards
of surgical care, training, education and examinations. There
are only 1,100 qualified surgeons for a population of 250
million people in the COSECSA region (9 countries) - a
reminder of the considerable challenges facing healthcare
professionals and leaders in developing countries. Over the
past number of years our staff have supported the COSECSA
programme by providing a number of leadership development
and training programmes for surgical leaders. We believe that
developing clinical leaders is key to improving patient care,
services and long-term sustainability.
We are also collaborating with Hanoi Medical University on a
faculty development programme for their staff. Our plan is to
increase the number of community engagement activities
overseas and in Ireland in the coming year.
