INDUSTRY PULSE RATE
TAKEN JULY 2007
• N.A. parts production is mixed – some layoffs –
outlook is approx. 16.5 to 16.8 million cars – down
from 17.5 million the previous year
• Seeing some companies ‘buying work’
(undercutting quotes)
• Business conditions are up and down
• Struggling domestically, although European market
is expanding
• A small number of opportunities coming from
Alberta
• Floor is full
• Machining business is busy while tool and mould is
slower
• Some Windsor mould shops are busy, some are
plodding along, while others are down to skeleton
crews and farming work offshore
• Quoting activity is extremely busy
• Work in progress is very good; still on 40-hour work
week; avoiding overtime; expect the same
conditions until December
• Expect current upturn is a blip and will see the
industry go down again
• Expect future to be a hybrid mix of complex tool
builds done in N.A. with simplified tool builds being
done in lower cost offshore countries
