TRIBUTE TO ROY HARRIS
Roy Harris (Cavalier Tool & Mfg. Ltd.)
passed away on June 18, 2007 at the age
of 67. On behalf of the member firms and
organizations involved with the Safety
Groups’ Program, the following tribute
was given at a recent meeting in
Windsor:
“I would like to take a moment to reflect
on the contribution Roy has given to the
Canadian MTDM Federation Safety
Group. Many of you know that Roy
served as a volunteer on the steering
committee and treasurer from the very
beginning and he was principally involved
in launching our Safety Group in Windsor
and involved in recruiting the original
member firms. Roy’s drive and spirit of
contribution will be sadly missed. Our
industry has lost a pillar in the tool, die,
mould making, and manufacturing
community. I would ask that we all take a
moment of silence to say thanks to Roy
and wish his family well.”
25+ YEAR MEMBERS
By: Robert Cattle, CTMA Vice President
When I look at this list of member companies that have
been active in the CTMA for 25 years or more, a couple of
thoughts come to my mind. How does a company grow
and prosper for 25 years and what value do they see in
maintaining their membership for this long period of time
Is there a correlation
In this uncertain marketplace, I think that it is imperative to
keep your eyes and ears open to all aspects of our industry.
Obviously, these business owners believe that there are
true benefits for belonging to our association, and have
used its advantages over this long period of time.
Congratulations - we look forward to the next 25 years.
MEDICAL DESIGN & MANUFACTURING
By: Emerson Suphal, ESS Business Strategies
Robert Cattle, MicroMetric Ltd.
We were very pleased to represent the CTMA at the
Medical Design & Manufacturing Technology Show in
New York, NY (June 11-15, 2007) that had more than
950 exhibitors and attracted over 50,000 visitors. The
show provided us with the opportunity to review
technologies used in the manufacture of medical devices
to determine how compatible they are with those in our
industry & identify potential opportunities for companies
in the tooling & machining sector. We also attempted to
identify and evaluate potential opportunities and
strategic alliances for technology transfer to/from the
medical devices sector.
The Medical Design & Manufacturing Technology Show
consisted of companies exhibiting products and services
for medical device product development. They included
medical-grade materials, components, electronics,
computer-aided design and manufacturing, production
and automation machinery, packaging, sterilization,
quality systems, contract manufacturing services,
networking, and enterprise IT.
Technologies: Companies exhibited a wide range of
technologies. Some of them are compatible with our
membership areas of expertise. CTMA members will be
familiar with the following:
• CNC Machine Tooling / Machining Centers / EDM &
Accessories (32 companies)
• Component Fabrication including metal (198 comps.)
• Laminating & Die Cutting (49 companies)
Almost all of the technologies presently used by CTMA
members in their manufacturing processes are found in
the medical devices sector including: machining (&
micro-machining), laser cutting, metal stamping, metal
heat-treating, metal finishing (plating, anodizing),
grinding, drilling, boring, welding and assemblies.
Products: The following product categories fall into
core competencies of some of our CTMA members and
they would be familiar with them, although not as they
apply to medical devices:
• Automation Equipment (56 companies)
• Metal Components (137 companies)
• Molding Equipment (86 companies)
• Precision Cutting Tools (44 companies)
• Precision Machining (84 companies)
• Rapid Prototyping Machines (20 companies)
• Specialty Metals / Alloys (48 companies)
• Welding Services (45 companies)
There were many other product categories represented
that are close to our members’ core competencies but
space does not permit us to list them all here.
POTENTIAL OPPORTUNITIES’ ASSESSMENT
It is common knowledge that the medical devices
industry is on a high growth trajectory given the
demographic trend in North America. While there are
many common technologies between CTMA members
and the medical device industry, there are also very
significant differences in operating standards and
controls. Technologies and manufacturing processes
used in the development and manufacturing of some
medical devices and medical devices production
equipment would be familiar to our membership. Indeed
some of them fall into the core competency area of our
member firms.
We found a number of metal stampers and CNC
machined component suppliers at the show who made a
transition to the medical devices sector from other
sectors over a few years. It took deliberate strategies to
convert and adjust their modes of operation to the
medical device market. In many cases, there is an
extremely high barrier to entry for a company with no
previous experience supplying products / services to this
industry. Issues such as very clean production
environments, quality standards, tolerances &
documentation are some of the concerns to be
addressed in order to supply to the medical devices
sector. Production volumes are low although with
relatively higher value.
Since medical devices & equipment cover a wide range
of materials and design, any attempt to get into this
sector will require careful research and analysis to
identify a niche which will contribute to long term
profitable growth. While opportunities exist for CTMA
members in the medical devices sector, it is long term
and requires a deliberate effort and commitment to
search for and find that first customer to get a ‘foot in the
door’, while simultaneously adapting their production
facilities and processes to medical devices standards.
WORLDWIDE BUSINESS CONDITIONS:
We participated in global trade discussions specific to
the machine, tool, die and mould industry and brought
home international market and business information
critical to the development of foreign trade activities.
Key among the market intelligence gathered was
information compiled by ISTMA Americas president
Harry Moser (Agie Charmilles) on worldwide business
conditions. In South Africa, Moser reported, tool and die
demand was greater than 0.6 billion Euros per year with
20 per cent being supplied locally.
The Asian report included evidence of a booming
industry in India with telecom and automotive markets
leading the way. China reported total tooling, die and
mould production at $7 to $8 billion with exports
representing approximately 44 per cent and imports 7
per cent.
In Europe, the Czech Republic reported all measures up
with Estonia reporting a growth rate of 10 per cent per
year – a country with no corporate income tax. Germany
as well reported an increase in orders of more than 14
per cent with an output of 4.1 billion Euros.
Russia, Turkey, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia and
Finland all reported favourable to robust to booming
growth rates. The U.K. reported strong business
conditions in the aerospace, dental and microsurgery
industries, but has a suffering toolmaking sector due to
the strength of its currency.
Switzerland’s outlook was favourable. However exports,
which account for 73 per cent of the country’s die and
mouldmaking production, are down by more than 10 per
cent.
The Americas reported a softening in the machining and
toolmaking sector in Canada due to the strength of the
Canadian dollar, and in the U.S., aerospace and
defense markets are strong but overall, mould, tool and
die production is slightly down. Argentina however
reported that business there is good to very good, and
the outlook is optimistic.
RUSSIA & ESTONIA – Post-Conference Events:
Some of the delegates participated in a post-conference
trip to St. Petersburg, Russia and Tallinn, Estonia. Mr.
Aleksander Kuzin, President of the Estonian Special
Tooling Association, arranged the following plant tours
for us in Estonia:
Viro Tools (www.virotools.ee) was established in 1993;
they currently have 47 employees with 80% of their work
ANTEC 2007
By: Horst Schmidt, CTMA President
ANTEC is the annual technical conference for the Society
of Plastics Engineers. Most of the technologies presented
at ANTEC are two to five years away from
commercialization. The sheer number of new developments
promises great opportunities for the future of tooling. For
the first time ANTEC was held in conjunction with the
Plastics Encounter trade show in Cincinnati Ohio. Despite
this combined attraction the attendance was down
considerably primarily due to current economic conditions.
The conference is truly an international event with over 625
technical papers being presented from virtually every corner
of the globe. The largest and most noted contingent was
from China who presented well over 100 of the technical
papers. Papers presented included:
MATERIALS & MATERIAL DEVELOPMENT (53%):
Composites: focused on fillers, primarily fiber fillers,
including the new nano fibers being developed.
Presentations covered the material properties that can be
achieved with these fillers and how these fillers must be
processed to achieve maximum benefit. The new natural
renewable fibers were also touched on as a new emerging
sector.
Decorating and assembly: presentations covered new
inks and coating materials including UV cure materials.
Methods of overcoming adhesion issues in assembly and
coatings were also presented. Two key objectives of the
new coating and decorating materials are to improve
surface hardness and to produce a metal-like finish on
plastics.
Engineering properties and structures: research
continues to improve low temperature performance; surface
hardness; and resistance to environmental breakdown.
New regulations have increased activities for better barrier
materials for both gasoline and gaseous materials. There
have also been advances in both thermal and electrical
conductivity of plastic. In the area of electrical conductivity
this has been achieved without the use of conductive
additives but by actually having the plastic resin conduct
electricity. By far the most touch upon area in engineered
polymers was that of nano materials, primarily carbon
nanotubes.
Medical plastics: covered new approved materials and
materials in the approval process. Presentations touched
on the effects of E-beam sterilization of various plastic
materials.
New technologies: almost all of the presentations in this
area revolved around various aspects of carbon nanotubes.
Polymer analysis: one of the major focuses this year was
on glass transition in polymers and the effect on materials
in a variety of processes. The other area of interest was
again in nano structures within the polymer matrix.
Thermoplastic elastomers: presented the latest
developments in TPU and TPV materials along with some
new developments in elastic copolymers.
Thermoplastic materials and foams: developments were
focused on polyolefin, polycarbonate, blowing & foaming
agents, and nano additives. Developments in polyolefin
materials were an increase of applications for this low cost
material. Polycarbonate developments were directed at
some of the weathering issues affecting this material and
the potential new market of glass replacement; blowing and
foaming agent developments were in response to new
regulations forcing current agents out of the market; and the
nano-essed being the new frontier for these resins.
Alloys and blends: the first series of presentations
covered material morphology and the resultant effect on
material properties and the alloying process. Then various
alloying and blending experiments were presented where
the objective of the alloy was determined and how close the
resulting alloy came to the prescribed objective.
Vinyl plastics: one of the most widely used polymers saw
a number of developments in improved weathering,
improved mechanical properties, and developments with
nano fillers and additives.
PROCESS AND PROCESS DEVELOPMENTS (29%):
Extrusion: presentations covered both single and multiple
screw extrusion systems and every aspect of the extrusion
parameters. New was the development of in line
compounding in an extruder to final product. Again nano
technology has affected the extrusion process in developing
new grades of material requiring new process
consideration. Papers were presented studying every
variable in the extrusion process in attempting to determine
the effect each has on the final part. The process is striving
for a greater level of predictability and stability.
Injection moulding: The most widely used process in
making plastic parts also has a great number of variables
that affect the result of the final part. The papers presented
addressed: shrink; mould flow and cool predictions; hot
runner systems and colour contamination; cooling systems;
screw design & performance; hot runner system designs;
tool venting; unique methods of tool cooling; shear & warp
studies; optimization; injection compression and part stress.
Joining of plastics: presentations covered gluing; vibration
welding; ultrasonic welding; infrared welding; and laser
welding. Presenters discussed the process parameters,
weld joint design, and materials to be used.
Thermoforming: there were a limited number of
presentations on this topic and most were focused on
thermoforming a certain material. One presentation
reviewed the process of thermoforming a textured surface
onto a thermoformed part.
Blow moulding: again this area had limited presentations
primarily focused on process improvements and process
simulation.
Rotational moulding: aside from process improvements,
the few presentations covered the issue of orange peel
finishes and the use of finer grained resins.
PRODUCTS AND PRODUCT DEVELOPMENTS (12%):
Flexible packaging: papers presented were on clear
barriers and characterization of heat shrinkable packaging.
Product design and development: papers presented
include: viscose sponges as actuators; design in
bioplastics; and design in nanocomposites;
TOOLING AND MACHINERY (6%):
Mouldmaking: presentations covered: collaborative design
models; integrated mould design and build process;
validation of design guidelines for cooling time and runner
size; shrink predictions in rubber compression moulding;
effects of high thermal conductive mould materials; and
variations in high cavitation tools.
