MEMBER STATES OF THE EC AND THEIR DATES OF ACCESSION<br />

The member states of the EC and their dates of accession are:<br />

Denmark 1.1.73<br />

Ireland 1.1.73<br />

United Kingdom 1.1.73<br />

Greece 1.1.81<br />

Portugal 1.1.86<br />

Spain 1.1.86<br />

Austria 1.1.95<br />

Finland 1.1.95<br />

Sweden 1.1.95<br />

With effect from 1 May 2004 the following countries joined the EC:<br />

Cyprus<br />

Czech Republic<br />

Estonia<br />

Hungary<br />

Latvia<br />

Lithuania<br />

Malta<br />

Poland<br />

Slovakia<br />

Slovenia<br />

With effect from 1 January 2007 the following countries joined the EC:<br />

Bulgaria<br />

Romania<br />

Cyprus – The Sovereign bases on Cyprus are not part of the EC.<br />

Denmark: On 1 February 1985, Greenland, part of the Kingdom of Denmark,<br />

ceased to be part of the EC. The Faroe Islands are not part of the EC.<br />

Germany: From 3 October 1990, the former German Democratic Republic<br />

became part of the Federal Republic of Germany. The enlarged Germany remains<br />

a member state and all nationals have full EC rights. Heligoland, although a taxfree<br />

port, is part of the EC.<br />

Finland: The Åland Islands are part of the EC.<br />

France: The French Overseas Departments (DOMs) (Guadeloupe, Martinique,<br />

French Guyana, Réunion) are part of Metropolitan France and the Treaties apply.<br />

But French Overseas Territories (French Polynesia, etc.) (TOMs) are not part of<br />

the EC.<br />

Netherlands: The Netherlands Antilles and Aruba are not part of the EU.<br />
