•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• introduction Digital skills are in demand in the workplace, from human resources and customer service, to sales, marketing, logistics, and research and development. Major universities now offer certificate programs in social media strategies to help seasoned executives catch up. The Altimeter Group conducts social business surveys to learn how social media is evolving. Results obtained between 2010 and 2013 “reveal that social media is extending deeper into organizations . What was previously a series of initiatives driven by marketing and PR is now evolving into a social business movement that looks to scale and integrate social across the organization” (Solis and Li, 2013). Thus, the workplace increasingly acknowledges both the value and necessity of having social media savvy employees. To prepare students for the technological and social media-rich working world ahead of them after they graduate, the academic environments that grant them degrees must also share with them intelligent opportunities for social media navigation and practice. Helping faculty to become excited by the potential and confident about the incorporation of social media in the teaching and learning process will help close the gap between current education practice and the waiting employment market that demands more. Many potentialities exist for the use of social media in higher education instruction The submissions for this e-book were assembled from wide-ranging disciplines by faculty members who participated in researching the use of tools in their classrooms. Their practical and tested methods and insights offer a well-rounded look into some of the many configurations Web 2.0 assets can assist with, in the realm of course enhancement and learning. Participating faculty adjusted assignments and applications based on regular feedback from students, as together everyone became more familiar and comfortable with a given digital platform and its contributions to learning. These ongoing instructor-student exchanges produced a continually evolving and advancing learning environment. A defining term common to all contributors was adaptation. Most of the initiated projects underwent refining changes that improved and refocused the learning and the outcomes. Instructors welcomed student input and suggestions for improvement, and students gamely offered ideas that strengthened the instructional value of the social media application. As educators in Higher Education, teaching faculty acknowledge the double-edged sword of social and digital technologies. This realization keeps faculty studying, researching, learning and engaging at a constant pace in order to keep up with pedagogy and with students. Projects like this e-book, which brought faculty together both formally and informally, strengthened both the education process and the student outcomes. 1
