DCO Introduces New e-Commerce Platform Day-Brite/Capri/Omega (DCO) has unveiled a powerful electronic commerce platform to drive down the cost of transactions and introduce new revenue opportunities. DCO is confident the e-commerce solution, known as Lightentry, will expand and enhance customer service. In fact, of all the calls DCO’s customer service department fields on a daily basis, more then half are for the purpose of checking stock and to schedule dates on orders. The next generation of enhancements will include links to carriers’ websites for tracking shipments, the ability to screen print summary data, and on-line order entry capability for stock products. Committee to Update ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-1999 The ASHRAE project committee is now working on updates under a continuous maintenance process for ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1 published in 1999. This process will lead to an updated version in 2004 and support adoption of the standard in building codes. IESNA has several members contributing to the lighting material but there is always a need for new contributors. More than a dozen ASHRAE and IESNA members have terms expiring in 2001. There are membership opportunities for those who wish to help improve the content of this standard. Prospective members should contact Rita Harrold at the IESNA office 212-248-5000, ext. 115; email rharrold@iesna.org Lightech Opens New Technology Center and Corporate Headquarters Lightech Electronic Industries, Ltd. has opened a new state-of-the-art Global Technology Center and expanded North America Headquarters. Based in Northern Lod Technology Park, Israel, Lightech’s new technology center is staffed by some of the world’s leading experts in analog electronics, with developments such as the world’s smallest and most energy efficient low-voltage electronic transformers. Lightech’s expanded North America headquarters are based in Tampa, and will enable Lightech to offer superior customer service and rapid product fulfillment within the North American market. NCQLP Announces Test Results for 2000 Examination Thomas Scott, LC, president, NCQLP announced that 228 lighting professionals sat for the 2000 exam, with a pass rate of 86.8 percent. The roster of lighting certified professionals has been increased by 198. The LC class of 2000 now brings the total number of Lighting Certified Professionals to 996. Progress Lighting and Lennar Family of Builders sign Luminaire Agreement Progress Lighting has signed a two-year agreement with Lennar Family of Builders Miami, to fulfill all lighting luminaire requirements for Lennar. Lennar Family of Builders chose Progress Lighting for its overall program benefits, capability to service all Lennar divisions nationwide, as well as for Progress Lighting’s excellent service record and history with Lennar’s newly-acquired U.S. Home. Starfire Lighting, Lightolier Sales Agencies Strike Business Alliance Starfire Lighting, Inc. now has an expanded business alliance with three professional lighting sales agencies owned by Lightolier Inc., all of which are located on the East Coast. Starfire is the only independent lighting products manufacturer to have this type of relationship with Lightolier’s company-owned sales representative organizations. The Lightolier sales agencies now affiliated with Starfire Lighting are Lightolier/New England Sales, Lightolier/Genlyte, and Lightolier New Orleans. Christos C. Mpelkas Christos C. Mpelkas of Mansfield, Mass., a plant physiologist who developed a method of rapidly growing crops without sunlight or soil, died at Union Hospital in Lynn, Mass. Mpelkas was an IESNA member for 38 years. He was 80 years old. Mpelkas’ vision, to one day grow crops much faster and efficiently, took him to places all over the globe. He traveled from the deserts of the Middle East and the countryside of Europe during World War II — to abandoned copper mines in Canada where he helped grow trees 5,000 ft below ground, to, finally, the banks of the Mystic River, where he set up a farm in an 8,000 sq ft Medford warehouse. During World War II, Mpelkas specialized in an emerging form of agriculture called hydroponics, which plants grow in nutrient-packed solutions, rather than soil. The vegetables were then digested by wounded Allied aviators, and according to the surgeon general of the Army Air Corps, the men recovered at a quicker rate. For the next three decades, Mpelkas worked for GTE Sylvania, where he developed lights, including the Gro-Lux fluorescent — a lamp that is used worldwide in greenhouses and research labs. Ender K.
