is one of the most important 

committee responsibilities. 

So, before we explore “Other 

Things,” let’s sharpen the quills and 

talk about committees and document 

writing; what opportunities 

exist, the fears, problems and limitations, 

and how to make the task 

more rewarding. 

Three paths to publication 

For most Design and Application, 

Technical and Research 

and Educational committees 

there are three document development 

paths: revising or modifying 

an existing publication, creating 

a new version of an existing 

publication, and/or creating a 

never-before published document 

on a new topic. 

The first path is the easiest, but 

perhaps the least creative and 

rewarding for committee members 

because the end-resulting “new” 

publication may not be a new product 

at all. In some cases, the committee 

may choose to simply reaffirm 

the existing material, with no 

change other than the reaffirmation 

date, because the technical content 

is still valid. 

The second path, revising an 

existing publication, is often the 

most difficult for committees. In 

this case, the committee has a 

document, developed by other 

members several years ago, used 

and respected in the industry for a 

long time, but now deemed to be 

in need of serious revision. (The 

Board has decreed that publications 

must be revised every five 

years and old material will be withdrawn 

by Board action.) 

The questions are plentiful. Can 

and should any of the existing 

material be salvaged to be included 

in a new version Perhaps, committee 

members may feel guilty 

about ignoring the information from 

the past. What needs to be said 

and for the benefit of what audience 

Where should the committee 

begin Who will do the writing 

Sometimes, the project is viewed 

as too intimidating because all 

members have professional responsibilities 

(i.e., jobs), with too little 

time to devote to the role of volunteer 

author. 

Often, the project is also viewed 

as difficult when all “old” information 

is discarded and the committee 

is truly faced with a blank 

sheet of paper. Then, the temptation 

to include more and more of 

the previously published material 

becomes greater. 

The third path is to create a new 

publication on a topic never previously 

addressed by the Society. 

Surprisingly, this is often easier 

than the second path for the following 

reasons: Enthusiasm is high 

because the committee is breaking 

new ground and actively adding credence 

to the Society’s role as The 

Lighting Authority. Members truly 

feel and enjoy the sense of ownership 

of the subject area because 

there is no comparison with previous 

IESNA publications. 

When the opportunity to address 

this new topic is announced and a 

new committee is formed, it tends 

to attract members who are 

experts, who, because of their 

knowledge, believe they can write 

about the subject in a short time 

period. New documents, therefore, 

are often developed more quickly 

than revisions to existing ones. One 

example of a committee that 

attracted experts, who, with enthusiasm 

and speed, created a new 

recommended practice in about 

three years from start to finish, is 

the committee on Lighting for the 

Aged and Partially Sighted. RP-28, 

Lighting for Senior Living Environments, 

is a Society bestseller.

gage in this creative process that 

are rewarding for committee members 

and the Society. Like many 

other aspects of life, having a game 

plan helps. Yes, the Board requires 

a formal plan or Project Initiation 

Form (PIF), which indicates the 

scope of the project, the intended 

audience, what kind of document is 

to be written (for example, Recommended 

Practice (RP), Design 

Guide (DG), Lighting Measurement 

(LM)), the type of support the committee 

might need, and the time 

frame needed to complete the task. 

But again, like so many other 

forms everyone fills out, once the 

formal submission is made by the 

chair, the form is forgotten and 

the project just goes in any direction. 

Before the PIF is filled out, 

the committee should brainstorm 

the topics on the form, so everyone 

on the committee has a clear 

idea of what the publication is 

going to be and the audience for 

whom it is intended. 

As an aside: While this column 

does not address the various methods 

that might be used for committee 

work, which will be the subject 

of a later column, it should be noted 

that brainstorming, or any of the 

other steps in the document writing 

process, can occur by means other 

than an actual face-to-face committee 

meeting. Conference calls work 

well, as does email. 

The next step is to develop an 

outline. Group participation is the 

important issue here. Everyone 

must feel there is the opportunity 

to have input. At this stage, the 

committee should look around the 

“room” to determine if the make-up 

of the committee is adequate for 

the project. What areas of expertise 

are missing and who should be 

asked to participate 

Once the outline is completed, 

the emphasis shifts from the group 

to individual roles, as flesh is put on 

the skeletal outline. The chair 

should make assignments to individual 

committee members so the 

workload is shared. This helps to 

overcome the objections mentioned 

above in describing the second 

path: “too busy with the job” or 

“overwhelming task.” It is still a 

fact, however, that some members 

will not complete their assignments. 

Maybe one member of the 

committee — someone who for various 

reasons just cannot do any 

writing — could be given the job of 

monitoring progress and reassigning 

portions of the document when 

inactivity slows the project. 

Adherence to deadlines is 

important, not only because IESNA 

wants to have new material to publish, 

but also, projects that drag on 

for too long dampen the enthusiasm 

of committee members, who 

in turn become less interested and 

may become less responsive when 

there is a new need for help on the 

committee. 

The final task of editing, pulling 

the individual members’ writings 

into a cohesive whole for a vote, is 

not without difficulties. IESNA staff 

can help here, if asked. It may be 

easier to have someone outside the 

committee wield the red edit pen, 

removing extraneous detail and repetition 

from the draft than for the 

chair to try to do the task. In fact, 

staff, and, of course, the vice-presidents, 

can help facilitate that 

process at any point. 

When a committee has completed 

its development work on a document, 

the satisfaction level is high. 

There should also be a great deal of 

pride in being part of a group of people 

that wrote a consensus standard 

for use in North America and, 

indeed, in other parts of the world. 

The sense of accomplishment is 

enhanced when the final printed 

publication comes off the press and 

members receive their copies with 

thanks for a job well done. 

IESNA needs the committees’ 

expertise to develop its recommendations.

already participating in document 

writing committees, we appreciate 

your contributions. And, for those of 

you who are thinking about joining,

Every year, I write on the cover of the candidate information 

sheet that voting for officers and RVPs is an 

obligation of membership. While the candidates have 

been vetted through discussions at either Regional 

Executive or Nominating Committees; through the 

Committee Forms, and ultimately, by the Society’s 

Board of Nomination, there is little enthusiam on the 

part of the membership as a whole to participate in the 

election process. Last year only 14.01 percent of eligible 

ballots were returned. In 1999, 17.51 percent of the 

eligible voting members returned ballots. 

Voting in the election is almost a passive activity 

when viewed alongside another responsibility of membership: 

commenting on documents, particularly documents 

that become ANSI standards. I’ve raised this 

issue before in this column, noting, at that time, we had 

received one response to the public review of RP-3- 

IESNA Recommended Practice for Lighting Educational 

Facilities. The Society publishes consensus 

documents, and in order for a document to be published, 

consensus must be achieved by the authoring 

committee, by the Technical Review Council and by the 

Board of Directors. But public review provides the 

opportunity to all interested parties to have a voice; 

why do so few participate 

As we move up the scale of the responsibility of members, 

one must consider the need for members to be 

involved at all levels: Section, Region, International, 

and at the Committee level in either governance or program 

positions. This means volunteering; this means 

having input; this means an active participation, not 

simply sitting back and complaining that the Society

Istarted writing about the energy 

crisis in California more than a 

year ago, and now that the situation 

is being reported on the 

front pages of newspapers, I don’t 

derive any satisfaction from having 

predicted this sad state of 

affairs. It’s not the fault of deregulation 

itself, but rather, that deregulation 

must be accompanied by a 

comprehensive plan, which includes 

aggressive energy conservation. 

We, as a society, have gotten 

spoiled by the abundance of 

energy with a mantra “if you need 

more power, just demand it, and it 

will be provided” instead of “waste 

not, want not.” 

In lighting, there are seven main 

causes of energy waste: 

A. Too much energy used for the 

light level needed due to 

1. Inefficient sources 

2. Inefficient luminaires 

3. Inefficient rooms (room finishes 

too dark) 

B. More light provided than necessary 

because 

4. Not enough task contrast 

5. Uncorrected eyesight 

6. Overlighting — Wrong level 

specified and no daylight 

harvesting 

C. And worst of all 

7. The lights are on, but 

nobody’s there 

If there is a profession waiting to 

be created it would be “visual task 

expert.” The recent vote-counting 

fiasco in Florida involving butterfly 

ballots, reminded me of an assignment 

I once had: studying the lighting 

for long distance telephone operators, 

who complained about the 

visual fatigue they experienced filling 

out IBM cards, which were then 

machine-scanned to bill customers. 

The operators’ consoles had 

small red lamps to indicate incoming 

calls, which were hard to see if 

the room illumination was too high. 

The IBM cards had parallel vertical 

lines, like multiple choice exam 

answer sheets, which had to be 

filled in by the operator with a soft 

pencil. The cards were soft beige in 

color and the parallel lines were 

printed in “eye-ease green.” 

It was easy to change the lighting 

in the room to indirect units 

located behind the consoles, and 

to raise the voltage on the red indicator 

lamps; however, the real 

improvement occurred when we 

provided IBM cards with lighter 

colored backgrounds and parallel 

lines printed in black. 

There’s been a great deal published 

by the IESNA about improving 

task contrast, but the only industry 

doing anything about it are the manufacturers 

of computer terminals 

and TV screens. Screens have gotten 

brighter, flatter and less reflective, 

with more pixels (HDTV) and 

better color in the last two years, 

while most printed reading material 

now has worse contrast and smaller 

type size than its predecessors. 

Graphic designers seem to have forgotten 

the purpose for which things 

are printed, which is why I feel there 

is a need for professionals from the 

lighting field to become “visual task 

experts” and improve our reading 

material and business forms. 

Last December, on the www. 

lighting.com website, there was an 

interview of Dr. Mark Rea, the 

director of the Lighting Research 

Center in Troy, N.Y. During the interview, 

Rea stated lighting is really 

about “visibility.” 

He continued, “The visibility for 

driving in the rain is remarkably stupid 

in terms of what we do about 

lighting. It violates everything we 

know about physics. In the rain, you 

get a mirrored surface on the 

street, so the light from one car 

reflects onto the driver of the 

oncoming car. The rest goes up into 

the sky. What you end up with is 

poor visibility, glare and wasted 

energy. Before I die, I want to improve 

this situation.” 

I recommend you log on to this 

website and read the entire interview; 

it’s fascinating. 

I promised you last month that I’d 

report on several new products in 

the pipeline that aid in energy conservation. 

The one I have high 

hopes for is a dimmable CFL lamp 

that can replace incandescent “A” 

and “R” reflector flood lamps. 

There’s an energy saving potential 

of 60 to 70 percent with these two 

products, but they are not ready for 

public consumption yet. 

What is available are digital electronic 

ballasts for dimming T8, T5, 

T5 HO, “Biax” and CFL fluorescent 

lamps, with incredible new user 

benefits. I will have more details for 

you next month on these exciting 

new products.

on March 25-27. I’m giving

to Save Lighting Energy for Fun

Over the next few months, I 

will share some of my 

thoughts on specification 

sales issues. These thoughts result 

from my professional experience in 

the lighting industry, as well as my 

architectural engineering education 

background. Along this journey, I 

plan to poll the opinions of people in 

the industry on various specification 

sales issues in order to provide 

an additional dimension to these 

topics. Consequently, I may be contacting 

you; so, please don’t hang 

up on me when I call you. 

SPECIFICATION SALES 

STRATEGIES

Before we explore the various 

issues of specification sales, let’s 

first define what we mean by specification 

sales and why it is important. 

Specification sales are often regarded 

as an indirect sales process, 

as outlined below. The specifier customer 

is often not the actual purchaser. 

In a typical project, the 

owner hires an architect who goes 

through the different stages of 

design, from the planning stage of a 

feasibility study and analysis, to the 

schematic design stage of a conceptual 

design, where the initial 

design and project costs are developed. 

The architect then starts the 

actual design stage where specifications/drawings 

are developed. If the 

budget allows for a lighting consultant, 

the architect hires an independent 

lighting consultant during this 

stage to concentrate on specific 

areas of the project that may require 

specialized lighting. If no budget has 

been set aside for an independent 

lighting consultant, someone in the 

architectural or engineering team 

will be designated as the lighting 

specifier for the project. 

The lighting specification sales 

process typically starts at this point 

in the design process. A specification 

salesperson influences the 

lighting designer/specifier of the 

project to specify xyz manufacturer’s 

products by introducing the 

appropriate products suitable for 

the project. The lighting specifier 

“specifies” the product he or she 

believes is suitable for the project 

by providing product names and 

manufacturers. Any relevant specification 

documentation, such as 

product data, is then included on 

the architectural construction drawings 

and documents. 

Typically, the lighting specification 

would indicate the preferred 

product(s) and manufacturer’s 

names, but would also include the 

phrase, “or equal” as part of the 

description. “Or equal” is one of the 

design/specification communities’ 

best means to keep the product 

pricing competitive. This protects 

the owner’s financial interests so 

the owner would not be taken 

advantage of by any one particular 

manufacturer. 

“Or Equal” is a topic of much discussion 

on its own and affects 

specification sales significantly and 

this is a subject that will be 

explored further in a later issue. 

Once the specifications and drawings 

are completed, the project 

would enter the bidding stage. The 

construction management team 

would hold competitive bidding 

among the general contractor 

teams. The winning general contractor 

would hire various sub-contractors, 

such as the electrical contractor 

in the case of lighting, who ends 

up purchasing the lighting products 

from the electrical distributors. Of 

course, this snapshot view of the 

construction process is very simplified. 

There can be many twists and 

turns along this process to further 

complicate the specification, especially 

during the construction phase. 

Many manufacturers participate 

in the specification sales process 

because of their understanding of 

the construction process. In the 

architectural construction market 

(U.S. market primarily), most products, 

including lighting, suitable for 

the architectural construction 

industry are typically sold through 

the construction process. Conscious 

participation in the specification 

sales process does make 

the manufacturer a more serious 

and successful player. Otherwise, 

manufacturers would need to rely 

solely on an electrical distribution 

sales network to sell their products, 

where products are more 

often sold based on pricing. This 

may not be a problem for less 

expensive products, but can be a 

problem for more premium-priced 

products. Thus, it is advantageous 

to manufacturers to participate in 

the specification sales process, 

even when their products are not 

ultimately utilized every time. 

Value-added products can, and 

often do, benefit from the specification 

sales process. Value-added 

products possess attributes, such 

as uniqueness in design, which can 

be either aesthetics-based or technology-based, 

or both. Promoting 

the message of their value to the 

specified community is the responsibility 

of the spec salesperson. 

One of the more effective methods 

to tell that message is through 

specification sales, which tends to 

be one of the more expedient methods. 

If the specifiers do not know 

the benefits, the value-added products 

most likely will not be specified. 

If the benefits are not successfully 

explained to the specifiers 

and the end users, the value-added 

products, even when specified, suffer 

great risk of being substituted 

by the construction team, whose 

members are typically more budget 

conscious and would happily 

replace more expensive items with 

less costly ones if they do not 

understand the difference. 

A commitment to specification 

sales requires a company to have a 

long-term perspective of the market. 

The specifier puts his or her 

reputation on the line by recommending 

one product over another. 

The specifier’s reputation and 

his/her ability to get future projects 

depend upon the success of his/her 

current project. 

Because of that, he/she needs 

to feel comfortable with the manufacturer 

whose products he/she is 

specifying. He/she needs the manufacturer’s 

help to correctly apply 

the products. If, and when, product 

problems arise during the construction 

process, he/she needs need 

the manufacturer’s support to help 

resolve the problems. 

The bottom line in the lighting 

industry is that manufacturers who 

are willing to commit to these 

terms tend to get repeat specifications 

and subsequent business. 

Those who are not consistent in 

their commitment, see their business 

suffer accordingly.

return on investment in those

My goal in the next three years is 

to get us all to understand the value 

of the “IESNA Community,” and 

what each of us will receive for 

active participation in our society. 

Let’s start with the definition of

one’s community. In this case, the 

community is the IESNA. We all 

share a common interest in advancing 

knowledge of the lighted environment 

as a benefit to society. In 

building a strong community, we 

create a powerful mechanism for 

cooperation and reliable interdependence 

to promote the importance 

of lighting. 

Building a strong community 

involves the participation of all 

members in an active exchange of 

ideas, and in working together to 

create a shared vision. In this fastpaced 

world, what better way for us 

to stay on top of our profession and 

continue our lifelong learning 

process What better way to meet 

new people, share new ideas and 

create new friendships This 

involvement can only lead to more 

personal, professional and community 

growth, and — in the process 

— allow us to make a commitment 

as a team that works together and 

has some fun, too. 

My immediate goals are to work 

with the sections in the Midwest 

Region to see how we can instill 

the importance of volunteerism 

and how local sections, regional 

organizations, national officers 

and the committees can work 

together to create value in the 

field of lighting. 

I look forward in my next three 

years to accomplishing these goals. 

We need to think “outside the box,” 

to come up with new ideas, new 

means to communicate them, and 

to increase perceived value. If we 

can accomplish this, we can create 

an organization that people will 

want to be involved with because of 

the prestige associated with being 

a member of the IESNA. 

I believe we are at a crossroads 

in our Society. It is time to remember 

the importance of being connected 

with each other. The 

IESNA’s diversified membership of 

engineers, architects, designers, 

educators, students, contractors, 

distributors, utility personnel, manufacturers 

and scientists is a strong 

body. It can become the voice for 

expressing the importance of lighting 

in our lives. 

I encourage you to attend an 

IESNA event (chapter meeting, 

regional meeting, national conference); 

become active in your section 

(board member, officer, committee 

member); or just volunteer 

some of your time to promote the 

value of good lighting design within 

your community.

the membership and to working not 

only with my region, but with all 

members to create a new, energized

In this month’s column, I will 

attempt to throw a net over the 

immense, wriggling digital octopus 

that is Interactivity. If we can hold it 

still for a few moments, perhaps I 

can describe the beast in a way that 

makes sense. 

In-ter-ac-tive adj. of, relating to, 

or being a two-way communication 

system that involves a user’s 

requests or responses. 

Before the Internet evolved into 

the wealth of information it is today, 

individuals and companies paid 

close attention to the key elements 

that drove the business forward. 

Technological innovations appeared 

from time to time, helping boost 

productivity and efficiency, but the 

focus was clearly on the primary drivers. 

Customer service, competition, 

distribution channels, supply 

chain logistics, operations and 

financial management were the crucial 

factors contributing to an organization’s 

success… or its failure. 

The same still holds true today. 

Many companies and investors 

continue to lick their wounds after 

losing sight of the proverbial forest, 

for all the digital trees. Managers 

placed too much emphasis on 

grabbing up these new tools of the 

trade, rather than learning how they 

could be used to support the core 

business objectives. The Internet is 

neither a magic wand nor a crystal 

ball. However, it is a tremendous 

resource, providing a near-seamless 

network of communication channels 

and management tools. 

In this column, we will explore 

how Interactivity and evolving technology 

can be harnessed to support 

a sound business strategy. Topics 

will include the following: 

• Interactivity takes communication 

to another level: Recognizing 

that the Internet is a critical 

resource for establishing dynamic 

links between multiple parties is 

the first step in harnessing its 

power. Organizations, companies, 

employees, stakeholders, clients, 

customers, end-users, vendors, suppliers, 

partners, associations and 

peers are able to interact and share 

information in ways that were not 

possible a few years ago. The shortest 

distance between two points is 

now measured in terms of time — 

not straight lines. The Internet has 

revolutionized the way we do business. 

• The Internet supports many 

basic business functions: For 

many people, the World Wide Web 

is synonymous with “Internet.” 

However, establishing a strong web 

presence is only one way to incorporate 

interactivity into your operations. 

File sharing, email, database 

management, access to information 

and research, presentations 

and remote management are all 

examples of how interactivity can 

help people and organizations 

accomplish their objectives more 

efficiently. 

• An Interactive strategy will 

enhance ongoing initiatives: For 

companies extending their presence 

online, the Internet allows 

them to broaden their reach beyond 

geographic regions, demographic 

targets and vertical markets. If executed 

properly, the Web is a tremendous 

resource for marketing, promotion, 

PR, generating sales leads, 

establishing partnerships, creating 

relationships, locating new vendors, 

keeping tabs on the competition 

and monitoring market trends. 

• The barriers to “Plugging In” 

are at an all-time low: Fifty percent 

of U.S. households now have computers 

(vs. 95 percent with televisions). 

Basic Internet access is 

available and affordable. Many 

organizations are transitioning to 

broadband access, which provides 

a platform for virtually limitless 

business applications. In other 

words, now is the time to incorporate 

Interactivity into your overall 

business strategy.

that was at once,

light luminaires 

made of stainless 

steel tubing, which conceal a 24-V strip, which uplights the vaulted wood ceiling. 

Pools of light from 90PAR38/H/FL25 degree downlights lead into the lounge 

where 50PAR36/NSP25 degree lamped luminaires provide 175 fc on artwork by 

prominent local artists. 

The lounge’s ambient lighting was integrated into the rhythm of the linear vaulted 

ceiling by surface-mounted fixtures housing 150 W quartz halogen lamps, reinforcing 

the elegant but soothing atmosphere. 

An array of table lamps establishes another level of comfort. Seating groups are 

separated by art glass grazed with 25 W low-voltage downlights on both sides. 

Daylighting management was achieved by Mecco shades, which were necessary 

due to the southwest exposure. 

The lobby concept is carried over into the bar area, which features a custom circular 

stainless steel tube with an integrated Xenon strip. Table tops and artwork 

are accented by 50 PAR36/VNSP lamps while 50 W MR16 lamps intensify the 

back bar area. Italian glass luminaires over the bar add a touch of class to the area. 

Energy issues were managed by a centralized dimming system with a timelock 

reducing overall energy consumption by 30 percent below designed loads, and also 

extending lamp life a minimum of 30 percent, thereby easing maintenance.

Hospital Strives for Warm, Welcoming Feel 

Hospital lighting is rarely termed “friendly.” Its primary goal, after all, isn’t to create a 

warm and fuzzy feeling; but rather, to allow physicians and other hospital personnel the best 

lighting possible for diagnoses and procedures. 

However, special circumstances sometimes result in changes to what’s typically called 

for. So, when the Oregon Health Sciences University, in Portland, Ore., constructed the 

Doernbecher Children’s Hospital on its campus, it strove to create an appearance that conveyed 

a feeling of peace and welcoming. 

The Children’s Hospital was expected to be a temporary home for some children, for 

example, those with terminal illnesses. Considering the young ages of the patients, the goal 

of creating a non-threatening environment became even more important. Rather than designing 

a sterile-looking facility, the owners brought in artists who built artwork into the actual 

architecture. For example, many of the windows in the main lobby are adorned with window 

art. A flock of sculpted birds hang from the ceiling in a random pattern. 

The challenge for lighting designer Denise Fong, LC, IALD, of Candela, was to create a 

playful lighting scheme to interact with this artwork. Compounding the challenge was the 

fact that, at the time of her hire, some artists hadn’t even been selected yet. Additionally, 

the 10-story building was built into the side of a cliff, which resulted in long, narrow floor plates. 

The main lobby features a great deal of daylight. Cold cathode lamps outline the ceiling curve, creating a halo of light around 

the edge of the room. These lights sweep the guest 

into the next space. In fact, Fong says, the hospital 

features many curved lines that define edges, but 

don’t necessarily create rooms. “It’s part of the 

less-regimented feel they were looking to achieve,” 

she says. 

In the wood ceiling, a series of semi-recessed 

luminaries interact with the flock of birds sculpture. 

The fixtures are sprinkled throughout the space, in 

a random order, similar to the birds’ arrangement. 

For night time light, glass-trimmed downlights 

provide reading light, and custom-designed sconces 

provide perimeter brightness. 

Within the patient rooms and hallways, the lighting 

is soft and non-institutional in design. In the corridors, 

two-lamp T8 fluorescent uplights with perforated 

fronts and articulated joints are used; while, in 

the patient rooms, uplights and sconces were chosen. 

The goal was to utilize primarily indirect light, 

with some recessed compact fluorescent lights. The 

examination light is a dimmer-controlled 1 x 1 ft 

recessed halogen square with a rectilinear beam. 

And, consistent with the hospital’s goal of creating 

an environment comfortable for the whole family, the patient care rooms have daybeds for parents who wish to stay with 

their children. In the daybed alcove, a separately controlled sconce allows the parent to read while the child sleeps. 

“The fluorescent fixtures we used are of a higher-cost than typically used in a hospital,” says Fong. “And, although we didn’t 

have a larger budget than normal, we knew we’d be using a lot of linear feet, so we worked up front with the supplier and made 

sure they would guarantee a price. On bid day, that was the price that was bid.” 

One of the highlights of the project was the creation of the non-denominational meditation room. Two artists were involved — 

one designed the ceiling and the other designed the leaf pattern on the walls. The ceiling art depicts a stylized solar eclipse, 

which the artist wanted to reflect onto the floor. However, the artwork has a 10 ft diameter, while the ceiling height is only 9 ft. 

“It’s really a challenge when your throw distance is shorter than the diameter of the image you want to project. Usually the 

throw distance is 2-3 times the diameter,” says Fong. The pattern on the floor is created by a projector, which needed to be 

mounted on its side, due to the small ceiling cavity space (1 ft deep). The projector, with a mirror and glass gobo, reflects the 

image to the floor to produce the same design. With fluorescent striplights above the panel, both create the illusion of sunlight 

passing through the ceiling, despite the fact that the room is not located on the top floor. 

On the walls, the dichroic glass leaf pattern is lighted by a halogen downlight. The pattern is recessed about 1 ft into the 

wall, with a soffit above it. An MR 16 light inside illuminates the leaves.

The New York Section of The Illuminating 

Engineering Society of North 

America is inviting entries for the 2001 

Richard Kelly Grant. This is an educational 

grant offered to recognize and 

encourage creative thought and activity 

in the use of light. 

Anyone, 35 years of age or younger 

at the time of submission, studying or 

working in the field of illumination in 

North America is eligible. 

The applicant must demonstrate an 

accomplishment and a potential to 

make a contribution in the art or science 

of illumination. Completed or proposed 

projects that represent innovative 

work in the use of light may be 

submitted. The submission shall consist 

of the following: 

A typed one-page proposal (250 

words maximum) detailing how light is 

utilized in its most challenging, innovative 

and resourceful way. Proposals 

should indicate how the recipient 

would use the grant to pursue his interest 

in light. A separate written description 

shall also accompany all visual 

material (all slides must be keyed to 

the description).

35mm slides, photographs,

Michael W. Pessina has been appointed 

senior vice-president of Lutron Electronics 

Co., Inc., Coopersburg, Pa. In addition to 

responsibilities for Supply Chain Operations 

Management, ranging from customer 

service to manufacturing and delivery 

of products to customers, Pessina will 

also have overall responsibility for the 

operation of the company’s business units. Pessina has 

been employed by Lutron for 24 years. In 1996, he was 

named vice-president of Manufacturing Operations and took 

on additional responsibilities as general manager of the 

Grafik Systems business unit in 1997. 

President of W.A.C. Lighting, Tony Wang announced Peter 

Su as the newest member of the technical sales and support 

team. Su will work closely with sales reps and customers 

— both in the field and from W.A.C. Lighting’s 

Headquarters in Garden City, N.Y. Duties include troubleshooting, 

providing information on installations and product 

applications, and addressing technical products issues 

with customers, specifiers and electrical contractors. 

The Watt Stopper, Santa Clara, Calif., has appointed 

Dorene Maniccia as manager of Market Segment Development. 

Prior to being employed by The Watt Stopper, 

Maniccia worked with the Lighting Research Center (LRC) 

where she spent nearly 10 years as manager of LRC 

Partners Program and Research Assistant Professor of 

Architecture. Maniccia has been an active participant in 

industry organizations such as IESNA, and has received

Renee Cohen was named manager of 

the TechCenter; a state-of-the-art lighting 

application and demonstration 

facility. Cohen’s responsibilities include 

scheduling, tours, maintenance, 

and special projects for the Tech- 

Center. Denise Gregoire was promoted 

to manager of electronic marketing. 

Gregoire’s responsibilities include 

management of Lightolier’s Electronic 

Marketing program, including overseeing 

the content and development of 

Lightolier’s website and e-commerce 

activities, the coordination and maintenance 

of all product databases, and 

training both Lightolier employees and 

customers on the use of all electronic 

marketing tools. Beatriz Oliveira was 

promoted to product specialist for 

Lightolier’s Calculite product line. 

Oliveira will be responsible for 

Calculite’s database maintenance, as 

well as producing all technical support 

to the sales force for the Calculite line. 

Also, she will assist in producing marketing 

materials such as catalogs and 

brochures, as well as competitive 

analyses. Jennifer Moran was promoted 

to assistant product manager for 

the Lytecaster line of downlights. The 

position will be responsible for overseeing 

Lytercaster’s database management, 

producing technical support 

to the sales force, writing competitive 

analyses and assisting in producing

Six Products Receive EDDY Awards 

Entertainment Design honored six manufacturers with awards in the lighting 

product category at the 2000 EDDY Awards, held in New York. 

The Common Sense show control interface, from The Artistic License, is a 

device that receives a multitude of input signals which can be converted to numerous 

serial outputs. The Hotshot distro panel, by George & Goldberg, can convert 

two-phase power into three-phase, allowing two quarter- or half-ton motors to be 

run using one 20A circuit. 

The Figment DMX, from Interactive Technologies, is a handheld moving light 

console with many DMX troubleshooting features that operates on the PALM 

PDA or PALM OS. The Rosco/Entertainment Technology IPS Capio System, 

which puts the company’s Intelligent Power System (IPS) dimmer technology in 

an economical high-density rack, is an attempt at providing an integrated 

approach; even the rack was re-engineered. 

The SLD Series, from Strand Lighting, features one module that operates on 

any voltage system in any environment worldwide. The product is designed to 

interface fully with the company’s ShowNet internet system. The VL2402 wash 

luminaire, from Vari-Lite, is a 700 W unit housed in the same package as the 

VL2200 spot luminaires. The VL2402 features zoomable beam spreader optics, 

CYM color mixing, a separate fixed color wheel, and a high-performance dimmer/strobe 

mechanism.

DCO Introduces New e-Commerce Platform 

Day-Brite/Capri/Omega (DCO) has unveiled a powerful electronic commerce 

platform to drive down the cost of transactions and introduce new revenue 

opportunities. 

DCO is confident the e-commerce solution, known as Lightentry, will expand 

and enhance customer service. In fact, of all the calls DCO’s customer service 

department fields on a daily basis, more then half are for the purpose of checking 

stock and to schedule dates on orders. The next generation of enhancements 

will include links to carriers’ websites for tracking shipments, the ability to 

screen print summary data, and on-line order entry capability for stock products. 

Committee to Update 

ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-1999 

The ASHRAE project committee is now working on updates under a continuous 

maintenance process for ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1 published in 

1999. This process will lead to an updated version in 2004 and support adoption 

of the standard in building codes. IESNA has several members contributing to the 

lighting material but there is always a need for new contributors. More than a 

dozen ASHRAE and IESNA members have terms expiring in 2001.

NCQLP Announces Test Results for 2000 Examination

pass rate of 86.8 percent. The roster of lighting certified

2000 now brings the total number of Lighting Certified

Progress Lighting has signed a two-year agreement with 

Lennar Family of Builders Miami, to fulfill all lighting luminaire 

requirements for Lennar. Lennar Family of Builders 

chose Progress Lighting for its overall program benefits, 

capability to service all Lennar divisions nationwide, as 

well as for Progress Lighting’s excellent service record and 

history with Lennar’s newly-acquired U.S. Home. 

Starfire Lighting, Lightolier Sales 

Agencies Strike Business Alliance 

Starfire Lighting, Inc. now has an expanded business 

alliance with three professional lighting sales agencies 

owned by Lightolier Inc., all of which are located on the 

East Coast. Starfire is the only independent lighting products 

manufacturer to have this type of relationship with 

Lightolier’s company-owned sales representative organizations. 

The Lightolier sales agencies now affiliated with 

Starfire Lighting are Lightolier/New England Sales, 

Lightolier/Genlyte, and Lightolier New Orleans. 

Christos C. Mpelkas 

Christos C. Mpelkas of Mansfield, Mass., a plant physiologist 

who developed a method of rapidly growing crops 

without sunlight or soil, died at Union Hospital in Lynn, 

Mass. Mpelkas was an IESNA member for 38 years. He 

was 80 years old. 

Mpelkas’ vision, to one day grow crops much faster and 

efficiently, took him to places all over the globe. He traveled 

from the deserts of the Middle East and the countryside of 

Europe during World War II — to abandoned copper mines in 

Canada where he helped grow trees 5,000 ft below ground, 

to, finally, the banks of the Mystic River, where he set up a 

farm in an 8,000 sq ft Medford warehouse. 

During World War II, Mpelkas specialized in an emerging 

form of agriculture called hydroponics, which plants grow in 

nutrient-packed solutions, rather than soil. The vegetables 

were then digested by wounded Allied aviators, and according 

to the surgeon general of the Army Air Corps, the men 

recovered at a quicker rate. 

For the next three decades, Mpelkas worked for GTE 

Sylvania, where he developed lights, including the Gro-Lux 

fluorescent — a lamp that is used worldwide in greenhouses 

and research labs.

Heyco Products, Inc. and Electro Terminal GmbH., of 

Innsbruck, Austria, part of the Tridonic Group subsidiary of 

Zumtobel AG of Germany have formed a business alliance. 

Each of the companies’ products meets total of 15 electrical 

and safety standards, qualifying them for ready installation 

in many countries. Electro Terminal itself meets ISO 

9001 and EQNET standards for uniform quality control to 

world-class standards throughout its operations. 

ETC Celebrates 25th Birthday 

International entertainment-lighting manufacturer ETC 

(Electronic Theatre Controls, Inc.) celebrated its 25th birthday. 

Started by four college students in December 24, 1975, 

the group built a lighting control console better than anything 

else available on the market at that time. 

ETC has grown to employ 600 people worldwide, with 

offices in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. The company began 

their celebrations in the Madison, Wis. area by lighting the 

lakeside exterior arches of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed 

Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center over the 

holiday season. ETC used 14 of its Irideon AR500 automated 

luminaires to direct brilliant washes of holiday cover of 

the Terrace’s arches and surfaces. A special lighting 

sequence ran hourly during darkness hours and included a 

custom New Year’s Eve show, which were projected onto 

the lake side of the building.

Central Missouri State University is located 50 miles southeast 

of Kansas City in Warrensburg, Mo. Founded in 1871, it 

has an enrollment of 11,500 students. 

The original library had been designed and built when the 

campus had been home to only 1,200 students. Although it 

had been upgraded and expanded through the years, it no 

longer met the American Library Association standards for 

accommodating books and students. 

The university had always been committed to acquiring, disseminating 

and utilizing technology to enhance the University’s 

educational mission. In 1996, the State of Missouri designated 

Central Missouri State University as the state’s lead institution 

for cultivating professional technology. The four major goals set 

forth in the implementation of this program were; 1) strengthening 

the university’s technology infrastructure; 2) developing 

new degree programs in advanced technologies; 3) strengthening 

Missouri’s secondary and post-secondary vocational and 

technical faculty; and 4) enhancing the university’s telecommunication 

network and public television station 

to provide distance learning opportunities. 

Hastings & Chivetta Architects, of St. Louis, 

Mo., in association with Boston-based Shepley, 

Bulfinch, Richardson, and Abbott was selected to 

provide programming and architectural design services 

that would meet the requirements of the 

American Library Association and the Association 

of College and Research Libraries, while setting the 

standard for technology integration as set forth by 

the State of Missouri. 

The result is a three-story, 220,000 sq ft facility, 

with a central cupola now standing as the symbol 

of the campus. Technology within the facility 

includes a data network to support research and 

study areas, electronic access to library journals 

and books, an internet-based interlibrary catalog 

search and loan, multimedia development workstations, 

multimedia production centers, and distance 

learning classrooms. Lighting had to play a 

key role in both physically and symbolically integrating 

architecture and technology. 

The exterior facade of richly detailed limestone reinforces a 

campus tradition of buildings unified through continuity of 

material. The generous glass openings provide ample daylight 

and dramatic views of the campus and the eastern edge of the 

Great Plains beyond. An automatic window shading system 

activates upon sensing excessive illumination or detecting heat 

levels above predetermined comfort levels.

The interior of the atrium core is illuminated primarily by 

daylight from clerestory glass where the atrium drum and 

cupola intersect. Within this light well, a conical element of 

steel pipe and perforated metal diffuses daylight. At night, the 

volume’s ceiling is uplit from concealed asymmetric metal 

halide accent luminaires. At the center of the conical element 

is a single, high wattage clear metal halide lamp that transforms 

the architectural surfaces into varied patterns of light and shadow. 

The cone itself is also highlighted by adjustable accent 

lights integrated into the assembly. 

The reading room and computer common spaces on Level 2 

rely on ceiling suspended compact fluorescent decorative pendants 

to provide ambient lighting conditions suitable for both 

reading and viewing video displays. 

The third floor contains the entire circulating collection and 

the main reading room. The reading room relies on uplighting 

from T8 asymmetric cove luminaries along the perimeter of a 

dramatic barrel vault. Concealed cold cathode within the ceiling 

ribs provides modulation along the length of the vault and 

accentuates its curvature. 

A suspended custom armature, featuring architectural materials 

found throughout the project, includes T8 asymmetric 

uplights and centrally mounted T8 striplights with a controlling 

lens to provide supplemental room light. MR16 accent 

lights trace along the armature to reveal and enhance finish 

materials.

Recessed Spots in both square and

three sources, accommodate MR

adjusted 360 degrees for a broad

Crystal-Lux halogen indoor floodlamps 

in a soft glass shell. The 

Crystal-Lux 60BR30 FL120V delivers 

the lumens of an 85 W incandescents 

flood from only 60 W. 

With the soft glass shell comes the 

desirable soft light of incandescents. 

Coupled with a halogen 

source, the Crystal-Lux gives off 

halogen’s pure white light, softly 

and uniformly distributed — all for 

about 30 percent less energy, says 

the company. The Crystal-Lux halogen 

lamp is currently available in 

the BR 30 style, with BT 15s and G 

25s available soon.

Case storage system for Kinoflo 

lamps. The K-Case features a 

removable lid, which allows the 

user to see the color-coded end of 

each tube for an instant inventory 

of contents. The die-cut foam interior 

cushions and protects the lamps, 

and allows the user to remove or 

replace any lamp without disturbing 

the others. The storage systems 

are available in 2 and 4 ft sizes and 

can hold up to 25 Kinoflo lamps, 

which load from the top like a tripod 

tube. 


The Luxo Designer Series of light 

luminaires includes the Walle wall 

sconces. The Walle family of decorative 

wall sconces features contemporary 

subtly curved diffusing 

shades, which appear to float over 

a square or rectangular wall bracket.

To eliminate yellowing, RAB Electric

HID WallPack luminaire with a new 

Prismatic Glass Lens. The luminaire

For timed override of low voltage 

HVAC and lighting control systems, 

TORK introduces its new SSA100R- 

24 Digital Interval Timer, which 

accepts input of 24VAC/VDC with 

no minimum load requirement. It 

provides eight field selectable settings 

ranging from five minutes up to 

12 hours and a manual scroll up for 

overrides in 10 minutes increments. 

The interval timer can be overridden 

ON or OFF from remote locations 

using simple momentary switches. 

It can warn the user with a flicker of 

the lights and an audible beep two 

minutes before the load turns off.
