A team of professionals and support staff provide personalized care for the patient and his/her family while they are in the hospital. Physicians and nurses collaborate daily on treatment and discharge plans working toward a speedy recovery.
eldercare SERVICES INPATIENT CARE/william P. clough extended care center SPECIALIZED CARE UNIT (SCU) The four-bed Specialized Care Unit is equipped with sophisticated monitoring systems and staffed with nurses who are certified in advanced life support and critical care nursing. The Special Care Unit provides constant monitoring and personalized treatment for patients who are critically ill. SKILLED/SWING BEDS Skilled/Swing Beds allow patients who need a short period of skilled nursing or rehabilitation services following discharge from an acute care setting to stay at New London Hospital, rather than being moved to an out-of-town nursing facility. Some patients may be transferred from another acute care facility for a short recovery period prior to returning to their home. SOCIAL SERVICES This department provides Social Services to the inpatient population, ambulatory setting, and extended care residents. Collaborating with the health care team, patients, their families and the community, Social Services provides a continuity of care that promotes a smooth transition from the hospital to home or elder care setting. WILLIAM P. CLOUGH EXTENDED CARE CENTER “The residents don’t live in our facility. We work in their home.” More than words, these thoughts reflect the way we work at The William P. Clough Extended Care Center of New London Hospital. Our 58-bed facility is small and our staff-to-resident ratio is higher than many other elder care facilities. A group of three hospitalists (medical doctors with a special interest in geriatrics) provides on-site care to the residents five days a week. There is never a lengthy ambulance ride to a distant hospital or confusion due to unavailable medical records, as emergent care with the New London Hospital Emergency Services is in the same building. 49 SKILLED CARE PROGRAM The Skilled Care Program is designed as a transitional program for patients following surgery or treatment in the hospital. Fifty-six percent of our skilled care residents are able to return to their home environment.
