Nexus
Formally opened to the public by award winning chef Mark Hix
in March 2012, Nexus is a brand new retail complex incorporating
the best hair, beauty and dining services the College has to offer.
Members of the public can pamper themselves with a treatment
provided by Level 3 students at the hair and beauty salons, before
indulging their taste buds at the ever-popular Da Vinci Restaurant.
Nexus brings together three of the College’s key training areas,
giving current and future students the chance to gain experience
in a state-of-the-art, professional setting, which will keep
customers coming back for more.
Da Vinci Restaurant
Our 40-seater training restaurant has been redesigned as part
of recent improvements and now incorporates a patio area
and licensed bar. The popular restaurant has gained a strong
reputation in recent years for excellent food and service. It is
open to students, staff and the public for lunches and themed
and charity events, which are supported by local employers
and give students the opportunity to train in a realistic setting.
Hospitality Training Kitchens
Our extensive hospitality facilities are complemented by two
purpose-built training kitchens. Here, students learn the skills
they need for the hospitality professions. Students also train
in the Da Vinci Restaurant, where they are assessed on their
customer care skills, bar and barista skills.
Nexus Beauty Salon (Yeovil) and
Bee Beautiful Salon (Shaftesbury)
These specialist training salons offer an extensive range of
treatments to external clients Monday to Friday, including
massage, waxing, manicures/pedicures, eye treatments and
more. Students work with professional products including the
Environ Skincare range, Hara Skincare, Jane Iredale make up
and OPI polishes. These are also on sale at the salon.
These are well-equipped training salons where supervised
students offer treatments including a range of the latest cutting,
blow-drying, perming and colour treatments for both men and
women. Both sites function as professional, high street salons
and are open to the public. Professional hair products are on
sale at both salons. For more information call 01935 845486
A Level students in mind, the £1.1 million Academy
The Academy also has social and relaxation areas where students
can wind down between classes.
The A Level Academy Learning Centre
It has been specifically designed to have an academic feel to help
prepare students for higher level study and a future in
the workplace.
The Centre offers a wide range of A Level-Specific online resources
and ebooks as well as more traditional resources such as
textbooks and DVDs. This is complemented by a comprehensive
research skills package developed and tailored especially for
Yeovil College A Level students. The Learning Centre staff have
strong links with lecturers so that they can ensure all the resources
needed for A Level courses are up-to-date and highly relevant.
The Centre includes formal and informal areas for supported or
independent study, as well as group working zones. The design and
technical infrastructure actively encourages students to use their
own laptops, smart phones and tablet PCs for study, making the
A Level Academy a genuinely innovative, modern study environment.
Our A Level students are supported by a team of academic staff
who have a unique understanding of how to help them fulfil their
potential and get the most from their time at Yeovil College.
take courses in subjects including Plumbing,
Security, Electrical Installation, Construction,
Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy, Health & Social
Learning). The site caters for 14-16 year olds,
full-time students, Apprentices and adults and
has been recently expanded and redeveloped.
Facilities
Recent investment in NDTC has created an extended, modern
site, which offers North Dorset students the chance to train
in well-equipped salons and workshops, giving them the best
opportunity to learn and succeed.
New additions include a dedicated Plumbing workshop, allowing
training in all aspects of Plumbing and Gas up to and including
Level 3, along with three brand new classrooms. If you are
studying Electrical Installation or Security Systems, you will learn
in our dedicated workshop-classrooms, designed to support your
specialist training.
a professional Beauty salon. If you are a trainee hair stylist or
beauty therapist, you will gain direct experience of a working
salon while studying for your qualification. Clients include
students, staff and members of the public.
traditional style lessons and a common area for relaxing
Studying at NDTC
NDTC students often come from local schools including
Foundation Learning -
Work Preparation, Work
Progression and Independent
Living Skills Programmes
Foundation Learning offers a variety of courses
that are individually tailored for young people
with additional needs. The College has an
excellent track record of successfully supporting
these students and many progress on to other
programmes of education and/or employment.
Students learn in small, friendly groups with
high levels of support.
The Work Preparation Programme is a two year course
designed for learners with moderate learning difficulties.
It focuses on the skills necessary to prepare them for other
courses, independent living and/or employment.
The Independent Living Skills is also a two year course.
It helps learners to develop and consolidate their independent
living skills alongside work skills, if appropriate. This course is
often a progression route from the Work Preparation Programme
and allows students who need a little longer to consolidate skills
to learn at their own pace.
Work Progression is a one year course. Learners join this course
if they need a year to improve their skills before further studies
and/or employment. For other learners, this is a progression
route from the Work Preparation Programme which helps them
consolidate and develop skills learnt during the first two years.
Curriculum Design
We offer a project-based curriculum where full-time students
learn vocational and life skills in a realistic environment. This can
enable the transition from education to work and could offer
routes for some students into mainstream education. We have
a strong commitment to the improvement of Functional Skills
(Maths and English) and the achievement of personal goals.
The curriculum is based on the needs of our students and can
change from year to year, however projects we have offered in
the past include:
Independent Living Skills
All full-time students access an Independent Living Skills
programme which includes Shopping & Cooking for
Independence, Social Skills, Relationships, Home Management,
Mobility/Accessing the Community, Money Matters and
Leisure & Personal Skills.
Community Awareness
This is about exploring the community around us and enables
students to familiarise themselves with the College, Yeovil and
the many facilities available, which students can then explore in
their own leisure time.
Work Ready
This short programme aims to get Work Preparation learners
ready to explore work placements. Learners create individual
CVs and investigate potential work placement opportunities.
Functional Skills Workshops
All learners are given the opportunity to develop and improve their
Numeracy, Literacy and ICT skills within small group workshops.
Create!
Learners are given the opportunity to express themselves
through art and craft, encouraging them to be more confident in
decision making skills and their ability to create something they
are happy to show others.
Retail & Enterprise
This project is based around the skills needed to work in a retail
environment. It covers areas including investigating the Retail
Industry, Health & Safety, Customer Service and Selling and
Stock Management. Learners have the opportunity to run a small
business and several stalls throughout the year.
Horticulture
Learners learn about propagation and planting and have the
opportunity to sell plants. They work in realistic settings, including
various sites around the College and the local community.
Horticulture theory includes Health & Safety, Investigating
Different Horticulture Areas and Seasonal Changes.
Catering
Learners gain the skills required for working in a Catering
environment, including Food Preparation, Table Setting, Customer
Service, Health & Hygiene and Food Service. Students are also
involved in running a small café.
Get Active!
This project is delivered through a wide range of practical
sporting and leisure activities. These experiences develop an
understanding of healthy living and the employment skills for
working in the Leisure industry.
Performing Arts
Learners plan and take part in various performances throughout
the year. Confidence and skills are gained in Music, Dance and
Drama. Learners also investigate lighting, music and stagecraft.
For further information, please contact the College on 01935 423921 or visit www.yeovil.ac.uk. All information correct at time of print. 11

The Football Project
Training in all aspects of the game is included in this project,
as well as general fitness and skill development. Learners
have the opportunity to play in matches both within the
group and with other local teams. As well as keeping fit,
learners also improve their Literacy and Numeracy skills
through football-related activities.
Residentials
Every year, our learners are encouraged to attend a week-long
residential trip. Destinations have included Wales, France,
London, Torquay and Spain.
Ten Tors Jubilee Challenge
The annual Ten Tors Jubilee Challenge is an optional opportunity
for learners to train, camp and walk on Dartmoor - a fantastic
experience for all!
& Apprenticeships
Vocational Courses
Explained
What are the courses about
These courses are a mixture of theory and
practical which help you to develop the skills you
need to progress in your chosen career. You will
be trained by lecturers who have experience of
working within the industry. The content is largely
related to the vocational area, although there are
generic units of study included on each course.
Several of the courses require a period of
work placement.
Course Duration
Entry Level: Time allocation varies.
Level 1: One year, but time allocation varies.
Level 2: About 14 hours per week for one year.
Level 3: About 14 hours per week for two years.
How will you be assessed
You will be continuously assessed through a range of
assignments, which could include presentations, research
topics, essays or work-related activities. It is likely that you will
be working on several assignments at once, so it is important
that you enjoy coursework and are well organised. Most
assignments are marked by your lecturers and externally verified
by the awarding body. However, it is likely that at least one unit
of study will be externally assessed. You will also have to develop
a portfolio of evidence, which will include assessors’ reports,
witness statements, photographs and other evidence that you
gather to indicate your proficiency. All students on Vocational
courses will also work towards achieving a Functional
Skills qualification.
Specific Entry Requirements
Entry Level: No formal entry requirements.
Level 1: A range of GCSEs at grade D-G or a pass at Entry Level.
Level 2: A minimum of four GCSEs at grade D or E or above or a
pass at Level 1.
Level 3: A minimum of five GCSEs at grade A*-C, or a pass at
Level 2 an ALIS score of at least 5.0.
These are minimum grades which are expected on all courses.
However, some courses make specific requirements in terms of
actual subjects required. Please ensure you check the details for
the specific course(s) you are interested in.
Additional Expenses
There may be some additional costs associated with certain
courses. For example, you may need to buy core or revision
textbooks, specialist equipment or clothes or contribute towards
trips and residentials. For details of specific courses, visit
www.yeovil.ac.uk, contact the College or come to one of our
Information Evenings. For more information on the standard
resources charge, please see page 107.
Progression
Achievement at one level allows natural progression to the
next level. However, some subjects insist that you are assessed
at Merit level before progressing from Level 2 to Level 3.
If you achieve a Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma, you
can progress onto a degree course, such as those available
at the University Centre Yeovil (UCY). You may decide to leave
College after achieving at any level to take up a suitable career
in your chosen occupational area.
Apprenticeships
Explained
What are Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are job-related qualifications
which allow you to work to build your knowledge
and skills, gain recognised qualifications and earn
money all at the same time. There are different
levels of Apprenticeships available, but they
all lead to industry-recognised and Functional
Skills qualifications. You will receive a separate
certificate for each qualification you achieve,
as well as an overall certificate once you have
completed and achieved all aspects of your
Apprenticeship programme.
Am I eligible for an Apprenticeship
You need to be working for an employer, usually for at least 30
hours per week. There are specific entry requirements for each
Apprenticeship, so check the listing for your preferred course in
this prospectus for details.
Will I have to pay for my Apprenticeship
The Apprenticeship course is fully-funded if you start your
Apprenticeship before your 19th birthday and have been a
resident in the UK for three years. If you are over 19 years of age,
your employer will be expected to make a contribution towards
the training.
What are my progression routes
If you are completing the Intermediate Apprenticeship
programme (Level 2) and your employer is willing to continue
supporting your training at a higher level, then you can progress
on to an Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3). When you finish the
Advanced Apprenticeship, your employer will hopefully recognise
your potential and worth and may even offer you continued
employment within their organisation. Alternatively, you may have
the opportunity to progress on to university and/or professional
courses such as those available at the University Centre Yeovil
(UCY), many of which can be studied part-time while you
continue to work.
